Employment History

Tom and Catherine O’Carroll

I worked for Tom and Catherine O’Carroll at both of their then premises called “The Caherciveen Park
Hotel” and “O’Carrolls Cove Beach Bar & Restaurant”. I started just picking up glasses on busy nights and
over the years became a more senior member of staff and senior barman during the busy summer nights.

Duties included and Skills learned :

 Money Management – As senior barman I was entrusted to count the contents of the till and
deposit in the premises safe.

 Customer Relations – As front staff for both premises I reflected the view of the business on the
customer. Being polite and well presented at all times regardless of the situation.

 Multi-tasking and Organisational skills – Having both a bar and a restaurant on the same
premises and going between the two required good coordination and organization.

 Culinary Skills – Helping out in the kitchen when asked to do so helped me learn the basics of
cookery.

 Teamwork – From the start and being a junior member of staff and taking orders from senior
members and then being able to do the same to people that were in my position before. Being able
to delegate tasks and organized the staff to run smoothly and efficiently with as little problems as
possible.

Noel Kelliher

I worked part time for Noel Kelliher in The Fertha Bar. During busy weekends I would come in to help.

Duties included and Skill learned :

 Advertising – Trying to get additional customers into the bar during the day by advertising the
bars positives and items like the flatscreen tv and sky sports.

 Customer Relations – Getting to know the existing customer base quickly was a must as in a
quiet local bar they enjoy the flow of conversation and improves their experience of the place.

 Teamwork – Joining a workplace and building a relationship with current staff and being able to
assist and delegate fairly being a new employee and to gain the trust and respect of others.

Johnny Clifford runs a garage in Caherciveen, Co.Kerry. He allowed me to come in when I wanted and
help out and teach me some of the mechanical skills that I could do. While being out of work it was nice to
be able to do something and keep occupied whilst learning skills in the process. I’ve been able to carry the
mechanical skills that I have learned into my home life and it has made the upkeep of my car cheaper now
that I know how to service it and where to order the parts.
