How To Fix Display Problems

1. Understand correct display approach techniques
2. Generate new ideas
- The store must decide what message it wants to convey to its customers
3. Display with intention, and display for the store that you want yours to become
4. Always think about THE PRESENTATION
5. The product should be placed so that it helps guide shoppers in their shopping
6. Try something new, keep records, adjust and repeat
7. Take photos of every display on the first of every month and use the sales data to make display decisions - what sells best? What needs to
improve?
8. The lighting used should be properly placed, correct, and flattering
9. Take the top 20% of the merchandise and display it in a specific case
10. To make the cases more interesting, merchandise should be differentiated by display
11. The vendor-provided displays should promote the brand of the store, not the vendor
- Their sizes and colors should fit with the stores look
- Their addition should make the sale easier
- Implement the "key item" concept to attract attention to one particular piece
12. Products should be displayed so that everyone sees what they look like at the case
13. The store should be organized in a way that imitates the way the customer shops
14. Products that are 12 months old or older that haven't been purchased should be taken off the sales floor

29

Store Layout, Design, and Visual Merchandising

- The above factors contribute to the uniqueness of the store and convey a certain message to the customers about the store
- The exterior is just as important as the interior
- Key Factors are:
1. Marquees
2. Walkways
3. Entrances
4. Doors
5. Display Windows
6. The height and the size of the building
7. Colors and materials used
8. Theft prevention tip: the huge white tag is uncomfortable when trying on clothes
-Space management is the first concern of any retailer when it comes to designing a store 's
interior
-Space is always an expensive and scarce resource
-Planing a layout for the store's interior is the first step in designing it
-The types of layouts are:

1. Grid
2. Race Track
3. Free form
- Allocating space to various merchandise is key
Allocation can be based on many factors such as:

1. Historical sales
2. Gross Margins
3. Industry averages
4. Strategic objectives

30

Store Layout, Design, and Visual Merchandising continued

Apart from various merchandise categories, space can also be allocated for carrying out some essential functions, such as:

1. The back room for receiving and sorting out inventories

2. An office
3. Aisles
4. Customer service desks
5. Floor space
6. Wall Space
Visual Merchandising definition - designing the interior of a store in such a way as to influence customer behavior
The interior of the store influences the purchase behavior of the customer to a great extent
For effective visual merchandising, the following need to be designed properly
1. Fixtures
2. Displays
3. Color
4. Lighting
5. Music
6. Scent
7. Ceilings
8. Floor

31

Store Layout, Design, and Visual Merchandising continued

Merchandise Presentation is what attracts the customers attention. The possible types of presentation are:
1. Idea-oriented presentation
2. Item- oriented presentation
3. Price Lining
4. Color presentation
5. Vertical Merchandising
6. Tonnage Merchandising
7. Frontal Presentation
- Merchandise theft is a major cause for concern for all retailers. This issue should be addressed at the initial stage of store design.
Electronic security such as CCTV and EAS can be used for prevention of such losses.

Tl1e Problem:
Tl1e shoe products displayed in stores sucl1 as
Forever 21, Zara, or Macy's are in a clear need of
support and proper presentation.

Zara

F21

Macy's

Due to the lack of support, the pairs of shoes displayed

at Zara keep falling down, which results in an
unattractive display, as well as possible product damage

The way Forever 21 displays their shoe products

results in merchandise being crammed into one
space, which creates a crowded and unattractive
display. Displaying products in such a way could
also produce product damage

Macy's shoe display is designed so that too

many pairs end up being crammed into
one space. This makes the display
extremely unattractive and uncomfortable
to browse through
