Aboilerfeedwaterpumpisaspecifictypeofpumpusedtopumpfeedwaterintoasteamboiler.Thewatermay
befreshlysuppliedorreturningcondensateproducedasaresultofthecondensationofthesteamproducedbythe
boiler.Thesepumpsarenormallyhighpressureunitsthattakesuctionfromacondensatereturnsystemandcanbe
ofthecentrifugalpumptypeorpositivedisplacementtype.

Feedwaterpumpsrangeinsizeuptomanyhorsepowerandtheelectricmotorisusuallyseparatedfromthepump
bodybysomeformofmechanicalcoupling.Largeindustrialcondensatepumpsmayalsoserveasthefeedwater
pump.Ineithercase,toforcethewaterintotheboiler,thepumpmustgeneratesufficientpressuretoovercomethe
steampressuredevelopedbytheboiler.Thisisusuallyaccomplishedthroughtheuseofacentrifugalpump.
Anothercommonformoffeedwaterpumpsrunconstantlyandareprovidedwithaminimumflowdevicetostop
overpressuringthepumponlowflows.Theminimumflowusuallyreturnstothetankordeaerator.

Failureofmechanicalseal
Sincethecorrosioninhibitorhydrazinehasbeenforbiddenasofthehealthrisksconnectedtoit,mechanicalseals
ofboilerfeedwaterpumpsshowsignsofelectricalcorrosionunknownbefore.Therelativemovementbetweenthe
slidingringandthestationaryringprovokesstaticchargingwhichincontrasttothepastarenolongerdiverted
asoftheverylowconductivityoftheboilerwaterbelowonemicroSiemenspercm[S/cm].Withinshortperiods
ofoperationinsomecasesonlyafewhundredoperationalhourspieceshavingthesizeoffingertipsbreakoff
fromtheslidingand/orthestationaryringandcauserapidincreasesinleakagecurrent.Diamondcoated(DLC)
mechanicalsealsavoidthisproblemandextenddurabilityremarkably.[1]

Steamlocomotivesandthesteamenginesusedonshipsandstationaryapplicationssuchaspowerplantsalso
requirefeedwaterpumps.Inthissituation,though,thepumpwasoftenpoweredusingasmallsteamenginethat
ranusingthesteamproducedbytheboiler.Ameanshadtobeprovided,ofcourse,toputtheinitialchargeof
waterintotheboiler(beforesteampowerwasavailabletooperatethesteampoweredfeedwaterpump).Thepump
wasoftenapositivedisplacementpumpthathadsteamvalvesandcylindersatoneendandfeedwatercylindersat
theotherendnocrankshaftwasrequired.
