Ball

Dribbling - is an
important skill for all
basketball players. This
skill will allow you to
move up and down the
court, maneuver past
defenders and execute
plays.
Shooting - In order to
score points in
basketball, you need to
shoot the ball into the
hoop. This requires the
ability to properly hold
and throw the ball into
the air toward the
basket while avoiding
defenders.
Running - is a big part
of basketball. In a fullcourt game, you will
find yourself running
back and forth as the
game quickly
transitions between
offense and defense.
Passing - is another
skill that when mastered
can help you become a
complete basketball
player.
Jumping - is involved
in offense during the
jump ball in the
beginning, while taking

The centre is generally

the tallest player who is
positioned near the
basket as he must be
able to get up as high as
possible for rebounds.
The power forwards
are usually the next
tallest players in the
team, who are closest to
the centre in physical
attributes and playing
style, but with more
speed.
The small forward
must have enough
height and ability to
play inside, and on top
of that, play like the
centres and power
forwards, but also be
able to guard.
The shooting guard is
potentially the shortest
player in the team.
However, he has to be
good at dribbling fast,
passing and having
court vision by seeing
the court.
The point guard needs
to be the best ball
handler, dribbler and
passer as he handles the
ball the most out of all

Team/No. of Players
Two teams of max.12
players, with a
maximum of five
players of each team on
the court at any time.
The Objective
The objective of the
game is to put the ball
in the opposing teams
basket. The team with
the most points at the
end of the game wins.
Duration
The game consists of
four periods of 10
minutes.
Scoring
A basket scored from
near the basket (inside
the three-point arc) is
worth two points. A
basket scored from far
(beyond the three-point
arc) is worth three
points. A basket scored
from the free-throw line
is worth one point.
Shot Clock
When a team gains
possession of the ball,
they have a maximum
of 24 seconds to
attempt a shot.
Foul

Referees
They are the ones who
are actually responsible
for enforcing rules and
regulations and calling
fouls and violations.
The number of referees
officiating a game
depends on the level of
play.
Lead Referee
Normally, all two or
three referees are
independent in terms of
making their decisions
but in case of a dispute,
its the lead referee
whose verdict is
considered final.
Scorers
There can be one or two
scorers in a game
depending on the rules
of the league and their
job is to write down the
stats relevant to the
game. They keep a
running summary of
points scored, notify
field goals and free
throws made and
missed.
Timers
One is official timer
who operates the game

Serve-Used to put the

ball in play. The action
is done with arm
swing that sends the
ball over the net into
the opponent's court.
Forearm Pass-Used to
receive the ball from
your opponents, as in
service, or as a
technique to accurately
control the ball in a way
that eliminates lifting or
carrying the ball.
Setting- Used to
receive a teammate's
pass in order that the
play may continue by
passing the ball
overhead to an attacker.
Kill or Attack-Used to
put the ball into the
opponent's court in
order to earn a point or
side out.
Block- A block is
effective if it
immediately places the
ball back into the
opponent's court or if it
temporarily slows down
the ball in order for a
defender to make a dig.
Floor Defense-used to
receive the opponent's
attack.

Outside hitter most

often attacks the balls
which setter sets to the
antenna to the left side
of the court.
Right side hitter has the
similar role than outside
hitter, they play front
row and back row and
are carrying pass,
attack, block, serve and
defense
responsibilities.
The opposite hitter is
the player who most
often scores the most
points in the team.
Opposite hitters dont
have the passing
responsibilities.
The setter is the
playmaker, point guard
or the quarterback of
the volleyball team. A
setters responsibility is
to run the teams
offense and build up
offensive scoring
opportunities for the
team.

There are six players on

court in a volleyball
team, who each must
rotate one position
clockwise every time
their team wins back
service from the
opposition. Only the
three players at the net
positions can jump and
spike or block near the
net. Teams scored a point
on every rally (Rally
Point System), regardless
of which team served.
Formerly, a team could
only win a point if it
served the ball. Winning
the serve back from the
opposition was known as
a side-out. Matches are
played best of five sets.
The first four sets are
played to 25 points, with
the final set being played
to 15 points. A team
must win a set by two
points. There is no
ceiling, so a set
continues until one of the
teams gains a two-point
advantage. Previously,
all sets were to 15 points,
with the first four sets
having a ceiling of 17
and the final set
requiring at least a two-

The official scorer

keeps track of the score
throughout the
volleyball game. Before
the game begins the
scorer notes the starting
lineup of each team and
notifies the referees if
the lineup wasnt
received on time.
At least two, and as
many as four, line
judges monitor each
game. The line judges
stand at the corners of
the court watching the
lines to indicate
whether a ball in play
falls in or out of the
court.
The first referee
stands on the referee
stand and controls the
play of the entire game.
Whatever issues arise
during the game, the
first referee determines
the call and has the
final say.
The second referee
works to assist the first
referee throughout the
game. If for some
reason the first referee
cant finish her duties,
the second referee may

Catching
The right catching skills
allow a player not only to
catch the ball without
getting hurt but also to
position him to throw the
ball precisely.
Throwing
A quick and accurate
throw can make it hard for
the opposing team to
advance their runners or
make a score.
Fielding
Players are drilled on the
right way of fielding a ball
that is hit on the ground as
well as in the air. Fielding
drills also involve
knowing where to throw
the ball.
Hitting
Hitting is probably the
most challenging and
enjoyable skill to learn in
softball. Hitting a small
ball with a rounded bat
out to a particular area - in
the split of a second - is a
technique that softball
players must continually
practice and perfect.
Base Running
Running and sliding are
often done, a good pair of
softball cleats and a trusty
pair of supportive,
moisture-wicking softball

Batter
The batter competes
against the entire
opposing team, which will
strategise in a bid.
Pitcher
The pitcher throws, or
pitches, the ball from the
pitchers mound.
Catcher
Positioned in a crouch
behind the home plate, the
catcher plays a crucial role
in helping to gain points
First Baseman
The first baseman of each
team will stand at the first
base, to the right of the
pitcher.
Second Baseman
You will find the second
baseman at the second
base, which is positioned
opposite the home base
across the field.
Third Baseman
The third baseman has to
catch the hits that land
around his or her area.
Shortstop
The shortstop has many
responsibilities, including
catching and fielding, and
are very versatile and
agile players.
Outfielders
Their job is to catch and
throw balls that fly out of

Each team consists of 9

players and teams can be
of mixed gender. A game
lasts for 7 innings and is
split into two sections; the
top and bottom of the
innings. Each team bats
once in each innings
before the sides switch.
The fielding team has a
pitcher, catcher, a player
on first base, second base,
third base, three deep
fielders and short stop. A
batter must successfully
strike the ball and run
around as many bases as
possible. Once they get all
the way around and back
to home plate without
being given out a run is
scored. The fielding team
can prevent the batsmen
by making them miss the
ball, catching the ball,
tagging one of the bases
before they reach it or
tagging the batsmen
whilst they are running
with the ball in hand.
Down the first and third
base line is a foul area.
Once the ball crosses this
line before it bounces the
ball is deemed dead and
play restarts with a new
pitch. A home run can be
