Summary:
Thermaldeaerationisaphysicalprocessforremovalofdissolvedgasesfromwater.Forthermaldeaeration,
thewatertobedeaeratedisbroughttotheboilingpointbyadditionofheat.

Thermaldeaerationisacontinuousprocess.Duringoperation,makeupwater,condensateandheat(usually

ProcessDescription:
Thermaldeaerationisbaseduponthedependencyofthesolubilityofgasesinwaterfromtheequilibrium
betweenconcentrationandpartialpressure,thetemperature,andtheboilingstate.Withincreasingwater
temperature,thesolubilityofgasesinwaterisreduced.Inboilingwater,thesolubilityintheoryapproaches
zero.

ThefirstoftheaforementioneddependenciesresultsfromHenry'sLaw,whichisoftenquotedinthiscontext.
AccordingtoHenry'sLaw,thepartialpressureofagasabovealiquidisdirectlyproportionaltothe
concentrationofthesamegasinthatliquid.Byreducingthepartialpressureofthegasabovetheliquid,for
examplebyevacuationorbydisplacingitwithanothergas,thesolubilityofthatsamegasintheliquidis
reducedaccordingly.
Themasstransferrequiredfordeaerationoccursbothbydiffusionatthephaseinterfacesandbyconvective
masstransferasgasandsteambubblesleavetheliquid.Forremovalofeventracedissolvedgasesas
requiredinboilerfeedwatertreatment,boilingofthecompleteliquidwithmaximisedphaseinterfacesurface
areasisrequired,whiletakingintoaccountthemodificationofboilingtemperaturebyhydrostaticpressure
resultingfromwaterdepthandsurfacetensionsatphaseinterfacesurfaceareas.
