Overview of Week Five: Getting Started

Last week we talked about the paraprofessionals role within the educational team.
There are many people that make a student successful, especially one that has a
disability or IEP. This week we are going to look why establishing rules and
expectations help a classroom run smoothly. This includes positive and negative
consequences. Understanding your role as a paraprofessional when it comes to
behavior management is extremely important to the overall success of the teacher,
classroom, and students.

Course Outcomes:
At the successful completion of this weeks lessons, you should be prepared to:
Describe the use of classroom management for a paraprofessional versus a teacher as it
relates to students success
Explain and examine the role of a paraprofessional in schools
Understand the responsibilities of an educational team

How can I use instruction as an effective behavior management tool?
Why are classroom rules important, and how do I teach students to adhere to them?
How can I best respond to negative student behavior?
What components are involved in the cycle of student-teacher interaction related to behavior
management?
What can be done to best encourage positive behavior in the classroom?
How does the behavior approach used in my classroom fit into the whole school approach?
What are some ways I can reward and recognize appropriate student behaviors?
How do I deal with inappropriate behaviors?
What procedures can I use to help students manage their own behavior?
