Exercise: DO BOD Sag Curve (Streeter-

Phelps Model)
Problem (Qz7):

A city discharges 100 million liters per day of domestic sewage into a
stream whose typical rate of flow is 250 m3 per second.
The velocity of the stream is approximately 3 km per hour. The
temperature of the sewage is 30C, while that of the stream is 15C.
The 20C BOD5 of the sewage is 180 mg/L, while that of the stream is
1.0 mg/L.
The sewage contains no DO, but the stream is 90% saturated
upstream of the discharge. Assume saturation level of DO as 10 mg/L.
At 20C, de-oxygenating coefficient is estimated to be 0.34 per day
while re-aeration coefficient is 0.65 per day.

1. Determine DO level at the critical point and its location.

2. If DO level at the critical point is less than 4 mg/L, what should
be allowable BOD5 of the wastewater.
Pl write your serial no. and entry no. on
the answer-sheet.
