Abstract
The experiment aimed to understand the basics and operation of plate and frame
filtration. It also studied the effect of certain variables on the resistance to filtration. A
plate and frame filter was used to filtrate an impurities material from the water. A tank
was filed with 500 liter of water and 0.25 kg impurities material (smooth sand). The
experiment was separated to two parts. First part the flow rate was assumed fixed and
the pressure was changed. The pressure was not changing too much. In the other part
of experiment, the flow rate was assumed to change because there was no control in
this device to control the pressure and the flowrate and the pressure was fixed at 0.19
bar. In part two, the turbidity (which indicate the quantity of suspended solids collide)
was measured using the instrument for measuring the light passes through the materials.
From the relation between t/V and V, the specific resistance of the cake ( ) and
filtering media resistance (r) was calculated.

Figure(1) VOLUME(L)

We can see from figure (1) that as volume increase t/v decrease and this is what it is
in the theory but in the theory its a straight line here there is some deviations because
of the assumption that the pressure is constant and the flowrate is changing and that
was not true in this experiment because the flow rate couldnt be controlled.

Figure(2)
Filtrate volume vs Turbidity NTU

As we see in figure 2 that as the volume of filtrate water increase the turbidity decrease
because now the cake also works as a filter which it will cause the turbidity decrease.
As we see from our calculation for the medium resistance and the cake resistance

= 2.9 1011 and = 5.3 1011 1 which show that the resistance of the cake
more than the medium and this is true at the beginning the resistance of the medium is
more than the cake but as time increase the cake start to build more and more if in this
experiment more time allowed we will observe that the resistance of the cake will be
much more than the medium. The p=1900N/m^2 in this experiment was for the inlet
pressure and this could be a source of error in this experiment.
