Students' ability to write descriptive texts was studied at a junior high school in Pekanbaru. The GIST strategy, which involves generating interactions between background knowledge and text, was used to teach writing. The study found that using the GIST strategy improved students' ability to write descriptive texts compared to a control group that did not use this strategy.
