Executive Summary

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a prominent 21st century business ideology that
heightens expectations of companies regarding social and environmental standards. The
results of CSR compliance are generally viewed as a good thing by most companies. The
main question arise before studied about CSR is Why do businesses exist? The answer may
be to earn profit. But if we go deeper and try to get real reasons, we come to the conclusion
that in a company a group of people get together so that they are able to accomplish
something collectively that they could not get separately and they contribute to the society.
Challenges lie in allocating time and resources necessary to develop a CSR approach that
meets governmental and social standards and achieves compliance with informal CSR
guidelines related to social and environmental responsibility. One of the biggest features
addressed by CSR is its intent to cause companies to recognize responsibilities to
stakeholders outside of shareholders. This includes customers, communities, employees and
suppliers. While proponents of CSR point out the long-term benefits of taking care of these
core relationships, shareholders are often deterred at the notion that companies will invest in
anything that does not create immediately obvious financial gain. With CSR, detecting
measurable bottom line benefits is a challenge as social and environmental programs are hard
to account for with regard to financial gain.

The evolution of corporate social responsibility in India refers to changes over time in India
of the cultural norms of corporations' engagement of corporate social responsibility (CSR),
with CSR referring to way that businesses are managed to bring about an overall positive
impact on the communities, cultures, societies and environments in which they operate. The
fundamentals of CSR rest on the fact that not only public policy but even corporates should
be responsible enough to address social issues. Thus companies should deal with the
challenges and issues looked after to a certain extent by the states. The report deals with CSR
perspective of Jaypee group after the introduction of Section 135 of The Companies Act,
2013.
Introduction
The Jaypee Group is an conglomerate based in Noida, India. It was founded by Jaiprakash
Gaur which is involved in well diversified infrastructure conglomerate with business interests
in Engineering & Construction, Power, Cement, Real Estate, Hospitality, Expressways, IT,
Sports & Education.

While Jaiprakash Associates Limited strives to achieve its business objectives, it has never
lost sight of its commitment to play its role as an enlightened corporate citizen so as to
achieve maximum social good. Corporate Social Responsibility has always been on its
agenda. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility has gained prominence from all
avenues and is now even a statutory requirement for certain companies after the new
Companies Act, 2013 has come into force. Pursuant to Section 135 of the Companies Act,
2013, and Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014 the Company has
constituted Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and requested the CSR Committee to
formulate and recommend a CSR Policy.

Corporate Social Responsibility is an integral part of everything that we do. Throughout the
years we have focused on our values, reducing the impact on the environment and being
engaged with our communities. Corporate Social responsibility is instilled in our Vision, our
strategies and management goals. The ethical standing of the Organization is evident in the
unquestioned credibility it has patiently built over the years with all its stakeholders. In fact
just like ethical practices and creation of a healthy workplace environment, Corporate Social

Conceptualizing and implementing a vast range of initiativesfrom education to healthcare

and from rural development to disaster reliefthe Sansthan today spearheads one of the

Jaiprakash Sewa Sansthan

Jaiprakash Sewa Sansthan (JSS) is a trust registered under the Income tax act, 1961,
established by The Jaypee group and its motto is "Growth with a human face". It is 'not for
profit' trust with a zeal which can reduce the pain and distress in the society. Initially the
focus was on the people in the vicinity of the group's cement establishments. However, the
intention was and is to reach out further and to touch more lives meaningfully.

Socio-economic development of the neighbouring villages of their Cement Complex near

Rewa received upmost attention with emphasis on education. A comprehensive Rural
Development programme (CRDP) was developed and implemented. 13 Villages in its
neighbourhood have been adopted for healthcare, animal care, literacy, drinking water,
employment generating schemes and infrastructure.
With passage of time, justifiably, education is receiving greater attention from them. The
intention is to provide education at all levels of the learning curve from grass root to higher
technical plane, provided practically free, to the children of lower strata of the society and
economically weaker sections and on vocational training so that they stand on their own legs
and become economically independent.

Though the university of higher technical learning would be established in the States where
Jaypee Group is involved in business, their vision is to play a pivotal role to enable the
concerned States in particular, in developing high calibre trained manpower in the frontier
areas of technologies, to take up challenges of the industry in the fields of infrastructure
development, manufacturing innovations, communications, networking and industrial
biotechnology applications.

All the three higher technical educational universities have been envisaged to reflect the
motto "Education, Empowerment and Enlightenment".
The Institutes will strive to bring innovations, creativity and flexibility to the curriculum
through credit and non-credit elective courses, open-ended projects, emphasis on problem-
solving through experimentation and design exercises, and creative and challenging home
assignments. They will also have sufficient orientation to international competitiveness,
quality management, and problem solving in different socio-political and economic
environments. Special lectures include development of entrepreneurial skills, strong industry
orientation and providing experience of working in inter disciplinary teams. All educational
programs of these institutes will have an inherently strong career and employment bias.

Their desire is to make these Institutions reputed "Centers of Excellence" in the field of
Engineering and Technology. Envisaged as a University, with highly developed educational
infrastructure, excellent faculty with an international outlook and active interaction with the
relevant industries, the primary objective of each of engineers and technologists to become
leaders of industry tomorrow.

1. Education

At Jaypee we firmly believe that Education is the cornerstone to economic

development and the strength of 1 billion Indians can be channelized by education
alone to build India into a developed nation. The real future of India liesin its
thousands of faceless little towns and villages, where millions of boys and girls lie
awake at night, dreaming of what could be. And we also believe that the key to unlock
those dreams and help them soar is a good education.

The Sardar Patel Vidyalayas were set up with the express purpose of bringing free
primary education to areas that had abysmally low literacy levels.

Today, there are several Sardar Patel Vidyalayas, Jaypee Vidya Mandirs and other
primary schools, that give students from the poorest families, access to free education,
a free mid-day meal and uniform to make it easier for their families to excuse them
from helping around the home and farm. These institutions of learning host the best of
faculty and educational infrastructure towards creation, generation, dissemination and
application of knowledge through an innovative teaching learning process to mould
the leaders of tomorrow. The institutions have well equipped libraries and ICT based
learning. Physical training and various life skills programmes are built into the
curriculum. Scholarships for meritorious students for pursuing higher learning are
other aspects of the education programme. Besides, coaching is provided for
competitive exams such as entrance for ITI s, NDA exams, etc and several students
from humble village background have qualified.

Our adult literacy classes dont stop at teaching people to write their names. From
filling government forms, to making bank withdrawals, our programme is designed to
impart a range of practical skills that help individuals integrate better into a
modernizing society. Village children are initiated into the learning atmosphere
through Balwadis which deploy interesting and creative learning methodology.

But, best of all, there are hundreds of heart-warming success stories that these schools
have helped spark over several years of their existence. As much as our achievements
across our core business areas, these are what make the business of doing business
truly worthwhile.
2. Skill Development

To see a life transformed Not because you gave a person charity; but because you
taught them a skill they could marketis among the most joyful feelings imaginable.

At Jaypee, its one we live through each day. At the Industrial Training Institutes set
up by the Group, unskilled young men and women are taught skills ranging from
operating lathes and construction machinery, to repairing cell phones and other
electronic devices. While some end up joining us, many go on to work for other
entities, or set up their own businesses.

Of all our rural employability initiatives, perhaps the most moving are the ones that
teach rural women simple skills that almost invariably end up as life transforming
events on a scale that seems out of proportion with the efforts expended. The
elevation of a womans status from someone who does the menial chores around the
house, to a respected, earning member who contributes significantly to the family
kitty, can be utterly empowering. And thats what makes all the effort it takes to
overcome centuries of bias seem completely worthwhile.

Over the last two decades, the many dozens of sewing courses conducted by our
trainers have produced hundreds of empowered women who have gone on to start
their own micro-businesses, using the sewing machines given to them free at the
successful completion of the course. In fact, many today are so successful, they
employ as many as a dozen women they have further trained themselves.

The seeping success of this initiative is now being duplicated across multiple
locations, by teaching women other skills that can generate an income, like making
papads and vadis, washing powder, incense stick and candles. Several SHGs have
been formed which also undertake minor infrastructure projects in the villages as a
source of income generation.

3. Medical Facility

In some of Indias most remote outposts, weve made sure people have access to the
most modern healthcare. These services are available free of cost to the remote rural
communities we consider ourselves to be a part of. In fact, most times, they dont
even need to come to us to access them; we take the services right up to their
doorstep.

From general health camps in hundreds of villages, to eye check-up camps for the
elderly, and even camps for their animals, we provide free health care to areas that are
among the most deficient in that respect across the country. And these are cutting-
edge services, some of which you would be hard pressed to find even in developed
urban pockets: mobile X-ray units that can be driven right up to a patients home, an
ambulance service equipped to provide advanced lifesaving critical-care not available
even in many hospitals.

The medical services supported by highly qualified medical practitioners

physicians, gynaecologists, surgeons, dentists, eye specialists, etc. have lowered infant
mortality rate and helped improve the life expectancy rate in the operational areas.

4. Rural Infrastructure

In consultation with the local community, and involves them in implementing it.
Includes critical projects that improve local infrastructure like roads, bridges,
irrigation canals and drainage systems, schools and hospitals; from building giant
water reservoirs that provide water to entire districts to smart projects.

Other initiatives
Animal Husbandry

Breed Upgradation Programme through Artificial Insemination.

Vaccination of animals in adopted village.
Animal husbandry awareness classes.
Veterinary services along Yamuna expressway.
