Lecture 2
In the last lecture we learnt about

Fundamentals of stiffness matrix

Nodes and member indices
Local and global coordinates
Kinematic indeterminacy
Member stiffness matrix (x,y ie in local coordinates )

q=kd

where q is force

d is displacement

k=member stiffness matrix

Member stiffness influence coefficient kij ie force at joint I when unit

displacement is imposed at j

Eg

From fig 1: if i=j=1 1 i j 2

k11= AE/L dN=1

Now if i=2, j=1 Fig 1

k21=-AE/L

The smallest angle between the positive x and y global axes and positive x
axes will be defined as x , y. these will be identified as x , y

x = cos x = (xf - xN) /L

y = cos y = (Yf - YN) /L

Displacement transformation matrix

D=TD

Where T = x y 0 0
0 0 x y

T transforms the four global (x,y ) displacements D into local x displacements d.

T is reffered to as the displacement transformation matrix.

Force Transformation Matrix

Q=TTq

x 0
Where T =T
y 0
0 x
0 y

TT transforms the two local x forces q acting at the ends of the

member into four global (x,y) force components Q.

Force transformation matrix is transpose of displacement transformation matrix.

Today we will start .

2.1 Member Stiffness Matrix in Global Coordinates K
We know

q=kd (local coordinates)

d= TD

substitute

q=kTD

but Q=TTq

Q = TTk T D

Q= KD where K= TTk T

K= Member stiffness Matrix in global Coordinates

Since TT , k, T are known

x 0
K= y 0 1 -1 x y 0 0 AE/L
0 x -1 1 0 0 x y
0 y

Nx Ny Fx Fy
x2 x y -x2 -x y Nx
K= x y y2 -x y -y2 Ny
- x2 - xy x2 x y Fx
-x y - y2 xy y2 Fy

The location of each element in this 4x4 symmetric matrix is referenced with each
global degree of freedom associated with near end N followed by far end F

Each term in matrix is therefore stiffness influence coefficient kij.

2.2 Determination of support reaction and Member end

forces
a) Support reaction:-

We know from Global Member Stiffness or Structure Stiffness

Q=KD

Qk k11 k12 Du
= k21 k22 Dk
Qu

Where Qk , Dk = Known ext loads and displacements. Loads here exits on the truss
as part of problem and displacements are generally specified as zero due to support
constrains such as pins and rollers.

Qu, Du= Unknown loads and displacements. Loads here represent the
unknown support reactions and displacements are at joints, where motion is
unconstrained in particular direction.

kij= Stiffness influence coefficient.

From above Matrix

Qk = k11Du + k12Dk

Qu= k21Du + k22Dk

Since often Dk = 0 ; because are not displaced.

Qk = k11Du

Du= [k11]-1 Qk

Qu= k21Du

Hence , unknown support reactions are determined.

b) Member Forces:-

We know q=kTD

qN DNx
= AE/L 1 -1 x y 0 0 DNy
qF -1 1 0 0 x y DFx
DFy

Since qN= -qF for equilibrium

There one force is to be found either qF or qN

If value is in negative then member is in compression.

Note :- Numerical will help to understand derived expressions.
