attendance now.

PRIMING
Who among you are alive, awake, alert, and
enthusiastic? (The students will raise their hands.)

Okay, for us to know who is the most alive,

most awake, most alert, and most enthusiastic,
let us have an activity which is called Picture
Guess. I have here a PICTIONARY; each
page of this Pictionary contains a set jumbled
letters that you need to form for you to know
what will be the focus of our lesson for today.
What youre going to do is to pass the
Pictionary while singing the song Awake,
Alert, Alive, Enthusiastic.. When the song
stopped and you are already done singing, the
one who is holding the Pictionary will be the
one to answer.

The set of pictures inside the Pictionary will

serve as your clue to assemble and form the
word correctly. Am I understood? Yes, Maam.

ICTEDR - ____________
DIRECT

ICEDTIRN - ___________ INDIRECT

CSEEPH - ____________ SPEECH

Okay, from your answers DIRECT,
INDIRECT, and SPEECH. What do you think
is our lesson for today all about? Direct and Indirect Speech.

Thats correct!

But before we proceed to our discussion, let us

have another game that has something to do
with our topic Direct and Indirect Speech.

ACTIVITY
This game is called: I Heard It Right! Before
anything else, let us divide the class into 3
groups. Please count 1-3.
Please move your chairs silently.

Okay, here is the direction:

Choose a leader who will represent the group.
Leaders will be the one to come in front and
answer the questions they will read silently.
After 15 seconds, all leaders have to move to
another group member and whisper their
answer. The answer will be passed from one
group mate to another. The cycle must
continue until it reaches the last member. The
last student member will be the one to write
down and interpret what he/she exactly heard.
Raise your answer board once you are done.

Example:
QUESTION: 1+1=?

SpongeBob: The answer is 2

Patrick: SpongeBob said the answer was 2
Squid ward: Patrick said the answer was 2
Mr. Crabs: (answer board)
Squid ward said the answer was 2

QUESTIONS:
If a plane crashes on the border between the US
and Canada, where would the survivors be buried?

Mrs. Smiths bungalow is decorated entirely of

pink. The ceiling is pink, even the lampshades are
pink. What color are her stairs.

Imagine you are driving a bus. You drive to

bus stop T, where 4 people get on. You then
arrived at the bus stop O, where 2 people get off.
Finally you reached bus stop M, where everyone
get off. What is the name of the bus driver? (The
answer is within the question.)

Imagine you have been kidnapped. Your only

way of escaping is through one of the 3 doors in
front of you.
Room 1 consists of a fiery inferno.
Room 2 is full of 30 paid assassins with loaded
guns.
Room 3 is full of 30 hungry snakes that have not
eaten for 3 months.
Which room is the safest way out?

Now, let us have a short summation of what

you did for that activity.

Khela, may I know the exact answer that you I told Yanna, The answer is none.
gave to Yanna?

How about you Yanna? What did you tell to I told cherry that Khela said the answer was
Cherry? none.
Maureen, what did you hear from Angelica? Angelica said that Kemlyn told her the answer
was cemetery.
Okay, its nice that youve communicated well
with your group. Everyone did great job. Give
yourselves a round of applause. (Students will clap.)

ANALYSIS
Once again take a look at your dialogues
written at the board. Everyone please read. *I told Yanna, The answer is none.
*I told cherry that Khela said the answer was
none.
*Angelica said that my other group mate told
her the answer was cemetery.
Now, what can you notice about the The other sentence is quoted while the others
sentences? are not./ The other one is directly stated while
the others are not.
Thats correct. Like you said a while ago, our
topic is all about the Direct and Indirect
Speech. But in the given statements, which do I told Yanna, The answer was none.
you think is the direct speech?

Nice!
Based from this example, how are you going Direct speech gives the exact word of the
to define what a direct speech is? speaker.
Okay.
Saying exactly what someone said or thought
is called a direct speech or sometimes quoted
speech because the spoken word of a person is
always enclosed in what punctuation mark? Quotation mark.
Good!
Now, who can give some example? (Students will answer.)
How about from the other examples, which do
you think is the Indirect Speech? *I told cherry that Khela said the answer was
none.
*Angelica said that my other group mate told
her the answer was cemetery.
And what do you think is an indirect speech? Indirect speech gives the words of the speaker
as reported by another person.
If the words presented are only an
approximation of what a person said or
thought the result is an indirect speech.
An indirect speech or usually called reported
speech reports only the general meaning of
what a person said or thought. It does not
require the use of quotation mark.

Who can give another example of an indirect (Students will answer.)

speech?

Now that you know the difference between the

direct speech and indirect speech, let us now
learn how we are going to change direct
speech into indirect one.

In changing a direct speech into an indirect

one, there are several rules that we need to
consider. We are going to enumerate and
discuss 4 rules. These rules will surely help
you a lot whenever you are dealing with other
people either inside or outside this classroom.

Rule #1. The introductory word that is used.

Example:
She announced, I won the spelling bee in She announced that she won the spelling at
school today! school today.

Can you cite some other example? (Students will answer.)

Rule #2. When the verb in the introductory

part is in present tense, the verb in the indirect
speech is also in the present tense.
Example:
Maldang says, I can keep my mouth shut Maldang says that she can keep her mouth
even for a week. shut even for a week.

Can you cite some other example? (Students will answer.)

Rule #3. When the verb in the introductory

part is in the past tense, the verb in the
reported speech is also in the past tense.
Example:
The first who talks will always wash the Maldang said that the first who talked would
dishes, Maldang stated. always wash the dishes.

Can you cite some other example? (Students will answer.)

Rule #4. When the quoted part expresses a

general truth, the same present form is used in
the reported speech.
Example:
Industry is a virtue, she said. She said that industry is a virtue.

Now, let us change the following sentences

into indirect speeches. (Oral Performance)

Any clarification?

ABSTRACTION
Let us see if you really got it well. Again
class, what have you learned in our lesson A direct speech is a quoted statement. It gives
today? the exact word of the speaker while an indirect
speech gives the words of the speaker as
reported by another person.
Correct. Very good.
Now, what are the rules in changing a direct
speech into an indirect one? Give one. Rule #1. The introductory word that is used.

Another? Rule #2. When the verb in the introductory

part is in present tense, the verb in the indirect
speech is also in the present tense.

Okay, good. Another answer. Rule #3. When the verb in the introductory
part is in the past tense, the verb in the
reported speech is also in the past tense.

Thats right. How about the last one? Rule #4. When the quoted part expresses a
general truth, the same present form is used in
the reported speech.

Do you think the use of direct and indirect

speech in every communicative situation is
important? Why? Yes. (Students answer may vary.)

Very good class. It seems that you really

understand our lesson for today.

APPLICATION
Controlled Practice
Now, for me to witness how good and fine
you really learn for today, we will have
another activity. You will perform another
task through the help of a well-known
personality on television. Who among you (Students will raise their hands.)
know about the reality TV show Pinoy Big
Brother?

Kuya/Big Brother will be joining our

discussion here. You are his housemates and I
will be your house guest. To have your
surprise budget price for this day, you have to
complete Kuyas tasks. Everybody get ready.
Let us now hear Kuya form Pinoy Big Brother
Grade 8 edition!

AUDIO: Good day housemates. Welcome to

my house. Another week has passed and its
now time for new challenges. You will face 2
daily challenges as a part of your weekly
challenge... As for your first task, always
remember, its not enough to just recognize. It
pays a lot to use what you have learned so
youd be prepared for real world tasks. House
guest Ms. Atienza, please go to the confession
room for task 1.

TASK 1: Raise that Speech

Direction: Write if the statement is DIRECT
or INDIRECT. Put it on the answer board
provided for each group. The first group to
raise their answer board will get additional
point if the answer is correct.

1. She said, I am going to college. DIRECT

2. She thanked me. INDIRECT
3. He said, I have passed the physical test. DIRECT
4. James asked Mary where she was going. INDIRECT
5. Manu said, I am very busy now. DIRECT

Semi-Controlled Practice
Let us now move forward to our next task and
let us hear it again from Big Brother.

AUDIO: Congratulations housemates! You

are about to complete successfully your
weekly tasks. For your last challenge always
remember, cooperation, creativity and
perseverance is the name of the game. (The student will read the task.)
Housemate Class President, please go to the TASK 2: DEAL OR NO DEAL?
confession room for task 2s instruction. Have a representative for each group go in

Decide who among the group members will
deliver the lines with proper expressions and
who will change it into the other form. The
most disciplined and organized group will get
additional point. Now HOUSEMATES, is it a
DEAL? Or NO DEAL? DEAL.

Job well-done everyone!

Remember:
We can express ourselves through our
wordings. Our values will also be shown
through the way we speak as well as the way
we act. Ones attitude and personality
contributes to the way he/she speaks and acts.
Understood? Yes Maam.

EVALUATION
Read the selection carefully. Separate the
direct speech from indirect speech by filling
the chart. Add necessary punctuation marks if
needed.

the meeting this morning. He said that your sales
were way up this month, and he mentioned that Direct Speech Indirect Speech
