GRADE 4 NEWSLETTER (October 2017)

Dear Parents,

First, hello to all the families who stayed on the island and those who have
returned. Since LU reopened after Hurricane Irma, we are happy to see so many of
you back at school. I am also happy to be here after a whirlwind month.

Our grade 4 students include: Ipek, Justin, Neil, Nathan, Savannah, Guston, Kavish, Sanya, Michel, Guo
Jun, Lucien and Jahnaila, and we expect several more will return by January. Yeah!

Next news, October is Fire Prevention & Safety month. We will celebrate fire
safety and prevention week (October 23-27) under the theme S top, Drop & Roll.
Firefighters will join us for a presentation and demonstration on Friday, October
27th from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. A permission slip will be sent home next Monday,
for parents to permit their children to participate in the activities with the
firefighters on Friday, October 27th.

STOP DROP & ROLL! (and call 919!).

On the last Friday of the month there will be a special dress code for dress down day on Friday as we
conclude our fire safety and prevention week (orange/red = fire colors)!

Heres an update on what we are doing in all our core subjects:

In Math we have just started a new unit with arrays and comparing perimeter and area, and perpendicular,
parallel and intersecting lines. In Science we will continue using the scientific method and build on our
understanding of cells, to look at classifications of living things. Students are making a book to summarize
what they have been reading about early settlements, taxation and the Declaration of Independence, for
their Social Studies assessment. In language we looked at suffixes, antonyms and synonyms this week.
We are also continuing to read Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, our book study for the trimester.

Finally, LU's Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is very happy to announce that this years annual
spook-tacular LU Halloween Party is ON! The party will take place on Saturday, October 28th, 4:00-6:30
p.m. (Please note, due to security and limited space, this party is for LU students and their immediate
siblings only and will be strictly enforced at the door.)

Heres looking forward to a fun (but not too windy) future

together in Grade 4 at LU!

Best,
Ms. Yvette
