Coins of Rzeczpospolita (XVIXVIII Century) from the Collection

of the Historical Museum in Provadia
Nevyan Mitev, Dragomir Georgiev / Varna

The aim of this publication is to introduce the single coin finds of Rzeczpospolita (XVIXVIII
centuries), which are kept in the collection of the Historical Museum in Provadia. They are a total of
10 pieces, which are distributed as follows: a coin of three groschen of Stephen Bathory (15761586),
minted in Vilnyus; a total of 8 pieces of three groschen of Sigismund III Vasa (15871632) 1 from
Poznan, 3 from Bydgoszcz, 1 Olkushch, 1 of which the mint can not be determined and 2 counterfeits;
one groschen of Augustus III (17331763).
Although the presented coins have not been found during archaeological excavation and are
worn through the years, they are a valuable source for the history of the Region of Provadia during
the Ottoman rule. There is no doubt that in this geographical area, as in the whole of the country, these
emissions have circulated.
Future archaeological research in the Region of Provadia as well as the publication of new
numismatic material, will complement the different types of coins of Rzeczpospolita which entered in
the coin circulation in this geographical area, and in the Bulgarian lands during the Ottoman rule.
