Procedures:
Part 1Making Clouds
1 Boil some water on the stove or microwave.
2 Let cool 30 seconds.
3 Ask your grown-up to measure two tablespoons of water into your narrow mouthed bottle.
4 Quickly put the ice cube at the mouth of the bottle
5 Watch what happens!
Part 2Making Rain
1 Fill the heat-resistant beaker halfway with water.
2 Pace the hotplate somewhere on the ground, unplugged. Place the beaker on the unplugged hot plate an

7 Place the ice cubes in the metal tray.
8 Not much will happen until the water in the beaker starts to get really hot. Be patient!
9 Observe, paying special attention to the bottom of the metal pan.
10 Double check that the water is dribbling into your collecting cup. You might need to adjust its location.

plugged hot plate and fill it with three tablespoons of water.
MATERIALS:
QTY SPECIFICATIONS
1pc 1 Liter capacity transparent plastic mineral water bottle with cap
12 pcs Cotton Balls
1 length 9mm x 130mm long plastic hose
1 length 4mm x 60mm long rubber hose
1 pc Party balloon
4 pcs. Rubber band
1 pc. Aquarium hose Y-connector
75mm wide x 125mm long Plastic cellophane (from 3x 10 plastic cellophane for
2 pcs. m,aking iced water)
IV. PROCEDURES
Heat the common iron nail # 3 and use it to pierce a hole on the center of the top surface of the plastic cap, just
1 enough for the 9mm plastic hose to fit into.
2 Insert one end of the 9mm plastic hose to the Y-hose conncetor and bond them with silicon glue
3 Cut into two the 4mm x 60mm long rubber hose and insert these into each end of the Y-hose connector.
Place cotton inside the two (2) plastic cellophanes and attach the mouths to the ends of Y-hose connector using rubber
4 bands
The resulting contraption will serve aas the lung assembly.
5 Slip over the 9mm plastic hose into the hole of the plastic cap and seal it with hot glue.
Measure about 25 mm from the bottom of the plastic bottle and cut to remove the bottom part. Replace it with party
6 balloon and secure it tightly using rubber bands.
7 The set-up is now ready for experiment.
V. GUIDE QUESTIONS
Functionality Test:
1 Light one cigarette stick and insert its filter end into the open plastic hose.
Pull outwrd and then push inward the party balloon and observe the movement of the cellophanes and cotton balls
2 inside the plastic mineral bottle.
3 If the cellophanes do not exhibit an expansion/ contraction movement, check for leakages of air in the hose area.
Repeat the pulling and pushing of the party balloon until the cigarette stick is consumed. Observe the color of the
4 cotton balls inside the cellophanes.

Testing Your Stethoscopes
1. Listen to the heartbeat of a helper using each one of your homemade stethoscopes. If there are other noises in
it can be difficult to hear using the stethoscope, so make sure you are in a quiet place.
Also, thick clothing may make it difficult to hear the heartbeat.
a. Place the large funnel of the stethoscope on your helper's chest, over where his or her heart is.
b. Put the small funnel against your ear, covering it. For the third stethoscope, put the hole at the end of the
cardboard tube against your ear.
c. Listen for your helper's heartbeat.
2. Which stethoscope made it easiest for you to hear your helper's heartbeat? Which stethoscope was the harde
hear your helper's heartbeat with?
Make a data table in your lab notebook like Table 1 below. Write down in your table how loud the heartbeat sounds
were for each stethoscope.
Write down that the heartbeat sounds were "soft," "medium," or "loud."

Table 1. Write down how loud the heartbeat sounds were for each stethoscope in your lab notebook in a data table
3. Score how loud each heartbeat sound was with a number. For example, "soft"= 1, "medium"= 2, and "loud"= 3
Using these numbers, make a bar graph of how loud the heartbeat sounds were using each stethoscope.
a. You can make a graph by hand or use a website like Create a Graph to make a graph on the computer and pr
b. Put each stethoscope's number on the x-axis (the horizontal axis going across) and how loud the heartbeats
on each stethoscope on the y-axis (the vertical axis going up and down).
i. For example, a "soft" heartbeat will be low on the y-axis, whereas a "loud" heartbeat will be high on the y
4. Why do you think one of the stethoscope designs worked better than another design?
What part of the better design do you think made it work better?
a. Do you think it was the tubing, the funnels, or some other part that made one stethoscope work better than
