Teacher Candidate: Nina Abdelfattah Date: November 26, 2017

Grade and Topic: Grade 3, Science Length of Lesson: 45 minutes for 2 days

Mentor Teacher: Marla Phillips School: University of Memphis - IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is a part of a unit of plants.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given the functions of a plant, TLW complete a concept map using Kidspiration that represent each
function of the plant with a score of three out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: comprehension)
Given the functions of a plant, TLW support the function with a written rationale with a score of three
out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension, analysis)
Given a computer and word processing software, TLW will write a summary that demonstrates a clear
understanding of the parts of the plant and its function with a score of three out of four on the rubric.
(Blooms taxonomy: synthesis)
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of each function of the plant.
Students provide visual representations and complete the handout on the functions of a plant.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Science 0307.1.1 Identify specific parts of a plant and describe their function.
ISTE Standards 3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate,
and use information. b) Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information
from a variety of sources and media.

MATERIALS:
Plants handout
Pencil
Computer
Internet access to: Online Plant Functions http://www.tutorvista.com/biology/parts-of-a-plant-for-kids
Kidspiration
Microsoft Word

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the functions of a plant by completing a concept map
of the meaning of each function of a plant.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN Science standard 0307.1.1
We will refer to the summary created here as we continue to explore the parts of a plant and its function.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
o Begin by displaying a plant on a large screen display, overhead or whiteboard.
o Provide some brief background information about the plant, the functions of the plant, and what
the plant requires for growth.
o Follow this brief discussion pointing out that the plant functions may be difficult to understand at
first but will get easier after the planned project.
o However, the next two days, students will be using a handout and Kidspiration to make the
functions of a plant easier to understand.
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (15 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:

1. After the introduction, distribute the Plant Functions Sheet to students and ask them to briefly describe the
possible function of each part of the pant and list key search words.

Student Procedures:

1. Students complete their Plant Functions Sheet by briefly describing the functions for each part of the plant.
2. They then list two or three key words they can use to search the functions of the plant.

At the Computer (45 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:

1. Have students open both Kidspiration and an Internet browser

2. Direct students to the plant functions website
3. Direct students to Picture View on Kidspiration
4. Monitor and assist as needed

Student Procedures:

1. Open Kidspiration and an Internet browser

2. Go to Plant website and read the plant functions
3. Go to Kidspiration and click on the main idea bubble
4. Add the following title: Parts of a Plant
5. Add another idea bubble from the left panel
6. Name the idea bubble: Seeds
7. Connect the idea bubbles by clicking on the Parts of a Plant bubble
8. Next click on the arrow icon at the top and then the idea bubble labeled Seeds.
9. Repeat steps 5-8 until all plant functions have been created
10. Add more idea bubbles to describe the functions.
11. Add at least one picture for each function
12. When all phrases are finished, correct any spelling errors.
13. Save work
14. Print a copy
After the Computer (30 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:
1. Place students in group of three to four students
2. Ask students to pass their Plant Function work to the person to their right
3. Students are to quietly review the work and take notes of the key similarities and differences, then pass the
paper to the next person until all the students in the group have reviewed all the papers
4. Give students 5-10 minutes to discuss the differences
5. Have students individually write a reflection about what the functions of a plant mean to them

Student Procedures:
1. While in a group, students review each others work and note differences and similarities between final
documents
2. Students discuss the different papers
3. Students write one paragraph describing what the functions of a plant means to them.

Closure: Students volunteer to share information about their plant reflections. At the end of class, the
teacher collects reflections, checks for assignment submission, and ask the class if they have any
questions.
