Motion of Particles

Through Fluids II

Free Settling Motion

particle has sufficient distance

from the container
its fall is not affected by other
particles
the velocity at free settling is the
terminal velocity (ut)

Hindered Settling Motion

happens when a particles motion

is impeded by other particles
present in a container
because particles are very near
each other
even there is no actual collision

Hindered Settling Motion

General Equation: (by Maude and Whitmore)
us = ut(e)m
Where:
us = hindered settling velocity
ut = terminal settling velocity
e = porosity
= volume of void space / total
volume of suspension

Porosity

e = porosity
= volume of void space / total
volume of suspension
= volume of water/total volume

Problem

Particles of sphalerite (spGr=4) are settling

by gravity in CCl4 at 20oC (SpGr=1.594).
The diameter of sphalerite are 0.05 mm.
The volume fraction of sphalerite in CCl4
is 0.20. What is the settling velocity of
sphalerite?

Example

A particle settles through a suspension

containing 35% solids by weight. Given
that the velocity under free settling
motion is ut = 0.00669 m/s. Find us.

[rp = 2800 kg/m3, Dp = 200 mesh,

r = 996.5 kg/m3, m = 0.8cp]
