Sample Lesson Plan

Lesson: Round Numbers


Introduction (5 minutes)

- Explaining that today we are going to see how we can round numbers.
- Telling the students that we round numbers almost every day, for instance, when someone asks
how much we pay for an item, we usually answer $30, instead of $29.99.
- Mentioning that rounding a number means to find out which 10 or 100 is closer to a number.
- Encouraging students to share other examples.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)

- Drawing a simple number line on board with intervals of 10 from 0-50.


- Placing a dot on number 17 and write 43 above the dot.
- Focusing the students attention to how to use the number line to round a number.
- Asking whether number 17 is closer to 10 or 20.
- Drawing another number line on the board with intervals 0f 100 from 100-500.
- Placing a star on 232 and writing 232 above the star.
- Asking: Which 100 is closer to 232?

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (10 minutes)

- Distributing the Rounding to the nearest 10- 100 worksheet.


- Going over the instruction of worksheet briefly.
- Encouraging students to work with their shoulder partners to answer the questions.

Independent Working Time (15 minutes)

- The students, who finish their worksheet, can go the Descartes Cove, Enriched Math, GAMCO,
and Mighty Math websites for individualized math lessons and practice tests.

Assessment (10 minutes)

- Giving each student a sticky note.


- Asking them to round up 178 to the nearest 100 and round 52 to the nearest 10.
- Asking them to write on their sticky notes.
- Collecting the notes and reviewing them later to assess students understanding of the lesson
content.

Review and Closing (5 minutes)

- Asking students some closing questions: Why is it helpful to round numbers? How can you use
number lines to help you round a number?
