Describing Things, Person, and Events

A. Rangkuman
When we need to describe semething, whether it is a thing,
person,or even, we will always have to use adjectives.
Adjectives used in descriptions are called opinion adjectives.
Keep in mind that adjectives are always subjective,it belongs to
each person and cannot be objectifed or generalized. An object
may have an A impression for one and B imperession for
others, it will never be the same. Some adjectives give a general
opinion. We can use these adjectives to describe almost any
noun.
Good Bad Lovely
Beautiful Nice Excellent
Awful Important Wonderful

Some adjectives give a specific opinion. We only use these


adjectives to describe particular kinds of noun.
Exampels:
- Food: tasty , delicious
- Furniture, building, or room: comfortable, uncomfortable,
nice, cold, warm, compact.
- People ore animals: clever, intelligent, friendly, cheerful

We usually put a general opinion in front of a specifice


opinion.
Exampels:
- Nice testy soup.
- A lovely intelligent animal.
We usually put an adjectives that gives opinion in front of an
adjective that is descriptives.
Examples:
- Tahts a nice red dress.
- Those are horrible yellow curtains.

We often have two adjectives ib front of a noun.


Examples:
- A handsome young man.
- A big black car.

We sometines have there adjectives, but this is unusual?


Examples;
- A nice handsome young man .
- A big black American musle car.

It Is Very unusual to have more


than there adjectives

Adjectives usually come in this order.

We use some adjectives only after a link verb.

Some of the commonest-ed adjectives are normally used only
after a link verb. Some of the adjectives are annoyed, finished,
bored, thrilled. The sentence pattern will have to be active.
Examplws:
- Our teacher was will.
- My uncle was very glad when he heard the news.
- The policeman seemed to be very annoyed.
We o not say:
- We had an ill teacher.
- When he heard the news, he was a very glad Uncle.
- He seemed to be a very annoyed policeman.

Few adjectives are used only in front of a noun.

We say;
- He lives in the eastern district.
- There were countless problems with the new machinery,
We do not say:
- the district he lives in is eastern.
- The problems with the new machinery were countless.
