If vs. when

If se može zameniti sa when u slučaju da se rečenica odnosni na opšte teme. (poznato kao
zero conditional)

When you heat ice, it melts.

If se koristi za nešto što prema rečima onog koji izgovara rečenicu može desiti
We can spend the afternoon on the beach if the weather is fine.
when is used for something that, according to the speaker, will happen.
I will clean up the kitchen right away when I'm back from work.

in case vs. if

In case se mоže koristiti da bi se rečenica skratila:

If there is a fire, leave the room. In case of fire, leave the room.

Dok If predstavlja uslov(1), in case se koristi da se pokaže mogućnost (2)

(1) I need painkillers if I'm in severe pain.
(2) I need painkillers in case I'm in severe pain.

In case koristimo kada pričamo o izvršavanju neke radnje, kako bismo u budućnosti izbegli
eventualni problem. Takođe, izraz just in case se koristi uglavnom na isti način.

I got you a pizza just in case you were hungry.
(I don't know whether you are hungry.)

Unless ima isto značenje kao i If...not
