DCEES launches i-TEACH Courseware

Embracing new technology

Dapitan City Experimental Elementary School Mrs. Kathleen T. Busico, a grade 1 teacher attended national
training in Lahug, Cebu City on August 25-29, 2013.

This new Deped Program aims to hone pupils’ mathematical skills and enhance critical thinking. This new
strategy is different from the usual classroom activity, it is a step by step activities that will lead to its objective.

According to Mrs. Busico it was indeed a big challenge and a burden on her part since this program requires
every pupils to have their own tablet, well, that’s actually a big problem with our kind of pupils here in DCEES
where parents can’t afford to provide their children with this kind of expensive technology.

Inspite of inavailability of the material used, the pupils were so eager, well-motivated, interested and so active
in every activities. The pupils just simply embraced what has been given to them.

Moreover, the program has the positive outcomes to the schoolchildren as well as to the teacher.

Help Save the Earth

Going green is easier than you think. There are little things you can do every day to help reduce green house
gasses and make a less harmful impact on the environment. Taking care of the Earth Is not just a responsibility
it’s a privilege.

Let us pay attention to how you use water. The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off
the water while you’re brushing your teeth, you’re doing something good. Got a leaky toilet? You might be
wasting hundred gallons of water a day. Try drinking tap water instead of bottled water, so you aren’t wasting
all that packaging as well. Wash your clothes in cold water when you can. You can reduce pollution just putting
that soda can in a different bin. Compost, think about how mush trash you make in a year. Reducing the
amount of solid waste you produce in a year means taking up less space in landfills plus, compost makes a
great natural fertilizer. Composting is easier than you think.

We young generation has our own share of making the earth better. Let us make the world a better home for
all of us. Start now before it is too late.

The Literary Gap

Poverty Hinders Education

Poverty is the simple biggest prediction for a child’s failure in school. Poor children may know only one to two
letters when entering kindergarten while middle-class children will know all twenty-six.

A study showed the vocabulary the first graders from high-income families was double that of those from low-
income homes.

The average middle-class child has been exposed to as many as 1,700 hours of one-on-one reading while the
average low income child has been exposed to 25 hours engaging for a living.

This is a time of year when we naturally focus on the quality of education. The government should also be a
time to pay attention to factors outside the school that have a profound impact on student success in class and
in life. To be ready to learn, kids must be healthy, well nourished and properly cared for long before start
kindergarten.

Why you need to relax

We need to relax more, not just an individual but as whole societies and cultures. Times have changed.
Biologically we need to go slow sometimes, to zone out and relax. Culturally life demands we be constantly
focused and active. If not properly managed, these cultural pressures can wreak huge damage on our health
and efficiency.

Of course, better technology brings all kinds of advantages, but while it clearly can reduce some pressures.
Cars are wonderful in some ways, but trying to rush to work while stuck in a traffic jam in not such a good
thing.

Since the invention of the clock we have been busy breaking our lives down into time segments a wonderfully
useful thing to do, which has enabled human beings to achieve what would once have been impossible feats.
But if we allow to clock to drives us, we become nothing more than slaves to the machine.
‘Yolanda’: pain and promise
Global warming is a warning, that because of rising ocean temperature and changing tidal patterns, weather
disturbances like typhoons would not only visit our country more frequently, but not these would be more
intense and as a consequence wreak more damage.

Those words would come to haunt me over the weekend as news of the extent of devastation wrought by
Super typhoon “Yolanda” filtered through. Described packed the strongest and fastest winds as well as
whimsical rains never seen or felt on the planet. A dramatic reminder for all of us how vulnerable we are to the
vagaries of weather, especially now that the earth’s temperature is on the rise.

Right now, most news outlets have devoted most of their front pages and many broadcast and telecasts, to
special coverage of the post-Yolanda damage. Most hearttending of all are scenes of the devastation in
Tacloban, the bloated coarpses littered among the debris of broken houses and felled trees lending dramatic
testimony to extent wrought by this supertyphoon.

Perhaps, a short prayer for the victims is the least we can do right now that will alleviate our worries and
anxieties of our souls. Through our prayers and effective solidarity, the faith will rise stronger in the midst of
ruins!

The courage of teachers

Each day, more than 40-50 pupils inside the classroom. Each day, parents and guardians entrust one teacher
with the education of their children. And on a normal day, that is all we expect teachers to do… teach.

But on those not – so normal days we are reminded that for six hours a day and more, five days a week,
teaching is not the only thing teachers are charged with doing. On those not – so normal days, we are
reminded that teachers are also asked to be surrogate parents, protectors, heroes and even as nannies.
Sometimes teachers risk their own lives to save children from danger. Are they heroes ? or just doing their
jobs?

Whatever you call it, teachers play a vital role in our nation. Some people say that teachers are overpaid, just
think of the effort, time, and not to mention of the money teachers’ spent just to build these young minds So
anyone who characterizes teachers as overpaid is forgetting what they entrust to the teachers with each and
everyday are their children.

Perhaps, we should be grateful that of something terrible does happens, there are these angels in the building
who will do right by their kids. Who will give anything, sometimes even their lives to protect them.

We hope and pray that they are willing to do much more and time and time and again.

Letter to the editor

We have noticed that our beloved school is always a victim of robbery, abuses and destructions. Electric wiring
are removed, chairs with steal bars are dismantled and all these are sold to the junk shop buyers, School
canteen, classroom and even office of the principal are ransacked important items are all stolen.

Our school needs a security guard to watch over the school on weekends, on Christmas breaks, on long
vacations and during the dark hours of the night.

We are looking forward for the immediate actions on this existing problem, so these intruders will stop and our
school will be able to maintain its peace, beauty and splendor.

What you can do about bullying?

If you are Being Bullied

Talk to your parents or an adult you can trust, such as teacher, school counselor or principal. Many teens who
are targets of bullies do not talk to adults because they feel embarrassed, ashamed, or fearful, and they
believe they should be able to handle to problem on their own. Others believe that involving adults will only
make the situation worse. While in some cases it is possible to end bullying without adult intervention involve
school officials and even law enforcement. Talk to a trusted adult who can help you develop a plan to end the
bullying, and provide you approach you with the support you need. If the first adult you approach is not
receptive, find another adult who will support and help you. It’s not useful to blame yourself for bully’s actions.
You can do a few things, however, that may help if a bully or let the bully see how much he or she has upset
you. If bullies know they are getting to you , they are likely to torment you more. If at all possible, stay calm and
respond evenly and firmly or else say nothing and walk away. Sometimes you can make a joke, laugh at
yourself, and use humor to defuse a situation.

Reasons students get poor grades

There are number of possible reasons that students get poor grades.

Some are external factors, such as the subject matter is too difficult, the teacher is hard to understand, and
problems at home. Other reasons have to do with students attitudes, such as didn’t do homework and goofed
off in class. Finally, there are reasons related to personal issues, such as text anxiety and problems
concentrating.

If you have been getting poor grades and you see the reason for it, you can try to rectify the situation and get
back on the right track.

Worn-out flag disposal

Our Philippine flag is our symbol of national identity, our integrity and a remembrance of our independence.
With this, it should be given respect at all times even if it is already worn-out.

Supervisors, principals, teachers and the boy scouts and girl scouts from different schools in the district
solemnly burned the worn-out Philippine flag. It was indeed a remarkable event in giving respect in
decommissioning a worn-out Philippine flag.

This act of reverence to our national symbol is very commendable, looking forward meeting the people behind
this wonderful exercise of Nation’s great gratitude to our heroes and gallant police protecting the constitution
and out beloved freedom.
Purpose of Homework
Teachers often give assignment consisting of reading problems solving, or writing that the student must do
after class-usually at home.

Ideally, the purpose of homework I to help reinforce what was taught in class. Sometimes its purpose is to
gather extra information beyond what was taught in class.

Unfortunately, there are some teachers who just don’t understand the meaning of homework and give it a
something to keep the student busy.

Technology and the Environment
To one who has seen the adverse effects of some technology on the environment the question how does
technology protect the environment? May have only one answer it doesn’t! The reality however is that from the
onset science and technology has been at the forefront of ensuring the environment is safeguarded. Science is
a weapon through which good or evil can do done depending on the consciences of those who are using it.
There are a lot of ways in which technology has been used to restore the integrity of the environment.

From reversing damage done by the chlorofluorocarbons (c.f.c’s) on the ozone layer to minimizing the harmful
effects of the greenhouse gases which bring about global warming science has played a key role in
safeguarding the environment.

Advancement in the scientific process of wastage disposal had led to the discovery and adoption of new and
better ways for carrying out refuse and sewerage disposal. Recycling has today become a major activity the
world over which has been through the intervention of science. This has led to conservation of resources for
example purifying sewerage into clean and safe drinking water and the recycling of polythene into usable
plastics.

Use of simple equipment such as garbage cans for disposing litter and recycling of natural waste for instance
using vegetable waste as manure may seem inconsequential but in the long term the benefits are left for all to
see.

Kids and teens spend a large number of their waking hours in front of one type of screen or another, and

Pluto (minor planet 134340)

A dwarf planet of the subcategory known a plutoids, smaller than the eight “classical” planets of the solar
system and usually farther than Neptune is from the Sun. Pluto is only two-thirds as big as our own Moon and
has only one-fifth of the Moon’s mass.

Its size had led to astronomers to question for some time whether Pluto should be called a planet at all. The
debate about Pluto’s status intensified in 2005 when it was shown that Eris (formerly known as 2003 UB313),
an object further out in the Kuiper Belt, might be larger than Pluto (although a more recent estimate suggests
that Eris is about the same size or slightly smaller than Pluto). On August 24, 2006, at a meeting of the
International Astronomical Union (IAU) astronomers voted to downgrade Pluto’s status. It is no longer
considered to belong in the same category on Mercury Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and
Neptune. Instead it has been placed in a new category of ‘dwarf planet’. It has also been given the minor
planets designation of 134340 Pluto.

Science Project for Energy Conservation

Science project can be a lot of fun, and they are also a great way for children to learn about the world around
them. Learning about energy conservation can be a positive lesson for young because it empowers them to
make a difference in the world around them when children learn that they can have a positive influence on
energy conservation, it inspires them to do more.

This experiment will engage students in an energy hunt, which introduces them to the topics of energy
conservation and energy efficiency. Students will be able to identify what objects in the room use energy and
which ones use more than others.

Take care of your digestive health

Eat to Ease Bloating

If an uncomfortable bloating sensation has you wanting to loosen you belt a notch or two, chances are you
need to eat more, not less more fiber, that is.

A slow- moving digestive system can result in bloating and irregularity, but you can help get your moving and
ease discomfort by adding fiber to your diet. One of fibers multiple health benefits is the way it helps maintain a
healthy digestive system. Lucky for you, high fiber foods also happen to be full of flavor.

Consider starting your day with a nutritious morning meal that includes a high-fiber breakfast cereal ( at least 5
grams of fiber per serving ) and fruit. This power duo ensures you’re getting both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Studies show that having both at once is better for maintaining regularity because they work in concert with
one another ingredients to look for on your cereal box are wheat bran (insoluble) any psyllium (soluble).
Late in the day, choose dishes like barley or bean soup or a salad with pears, or reach for foods such as
barley, peas and citrus fruits. Just be sure to take car when adding fiber to your diet…adding too much quickly
has the potential to worsen bloating. Introduce new fiber-rich food one at a time.

Space for all: Small. Cheap satellites may one day do your bidding

San Francisco. Someday swarms of satellites the size of a tissue box will be snapping pictures, taking

be governments.

Instead, they’ll be hard-core hobbyists and elementary-school students, entrepreneurs and hacktivists. I short,
anyone who can afford a few hundred dollars to send something to the final frontier.

The technology for this outer-space revolution already exists: It’s a type of satellite known as a CubeSat, which
measures just 4 inches (10 centimeters) on a side. The CubeSat phenomenon started out as an educational
experiment, but now it’s turning into a crowdsourcing, crowdfunding movement of kickstarter proportions. And
not even the sky in the limit.

This year alone. More than two dozen CubeSat are due to go into orbit, piggybacking on commercial and
government space launches.

Monitor Activities of Kids on Internet

Safety is an application for parents to monitor their child’s online activities.Very good thing about the
application in that you need not install any software. It’s safe and anytime accessible via Internet. SafetyWeb
keeps a watch over you children’s internet activities for you all time and report you their activities, which you
can’t.

Safety Web is a really good parental central software, but it is not free. It costs around $ 10 per month per
child. There are many free parental control software available that does a pretty good job at monitoring online
activities of kids.
