Questionnaire chapter 8:

1. Set pressure – The pressure at w/c relief device begins to activate.

2. Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) - Maximum gauge pressure permissible at the
top of the vessel for a designated temperature.
3. Backpressure - the pressure at the outlet of the relief device during the relief process resulting
from pressure in the discharge system.
4. 10% - Operating pressure is the gauge pressure during normal service, usually ___ below the
MAWP.
5. Accumulation – The pressure increase over the MAWP of the vessel during the relief process. It is
expressed as percentage of the MAWP
6. Overpressure – The pressure increase in the vessel over the set pressure during the relieving
process. Overpressure is equivalent to accumulation when the set pressure is at MAWP.
7. Blowdown – The pressure between the relief set pressure and relief reseating pressure.
8. Conventional spring-operated valve - The valve opens based on the pressure drop across the
valve seat; that is the set pressure is proportional to the pressure drop across the seat.
9. Balanced Bellows - Will always open at the desired set pressure
10. Total Containment System – Commonly used and becoming industrial standard.
11. Flares - are sometimes used after the knockout drum.
12. Simple condenser - is another possible alternative for treating exiting vapors.
13. Rupture Discs – Are specially designed to rupture at a specified set relief pressure.
14. 121 % - Maximum relieving pressure for fire.
15. Accumulation – The pressure increase over the MAWP of the vessel during the relief process. It is
expressed as percentage of the MAWP
16. Overpressure – The pressure increase in the vessel over the set pressure during the relieving process.
Overpressure is equivalent to accumulation when the set pressure is at MAWP.
17. Backpressure - the pressure at the outlet of the relief device during the relief process resulting from
pressure in the discharge system.
18. - 20. Reactors, Storage tanks, Towers - All vessels need reliefs including.

Enumeration:

A. Pressure relief systems are required for the following reasons:

B. Major types of relief devices

1. Conventional spring-operated valve
2. Rupture disc and assembly
3. Balanced Bellows

C. Three subcategory types of spring-loaded pressure reliefs and there use ( 2pts each )
1. Relief Valve - Primarily used for liquid service
2. Safety valve – used for gases.
3. Safety relief valve - used for liquid and gases.

D. Two general categories of relief devices

1. Spring operated and rupture disc
2. Conventional and balanced bellows

PROBLEM SOLVING:
1) Determine the maximum vapor velocity in a horizontal knockout drum to dropout liquid particles with
particle diameters of 310 μ m, where: (8pts)

Given:
Vapor rate = 170 lb/hr,
ρV = 0.20 lb/ ft 3 ,
ρ L = 30 Ib/ ft 3 ,
μv = 0.01 centipoise, and
d p = 310 μ m = 1.02 x 10

2) Determine the stack height required to give a heat intensity of 1500 Btu/hr/ ft 2 at a distance of 415
ft from the base of the flare. The flare diameter is 3 ft, the flare load is 970,000 Ib/hr, and the molecular
weight of the vapor is 44. (5pts)
