Grammar reference
We use the simple past to talk about states, events, actions, experiences in the past.
Form
with most verbs add -ed, e.g. answer – answered, listen – listened, walk – walked, want – wanted
with verbs ending in -e, add -d, e.g. prepare – prepared, like – liked, loved – loved
with verbs ending in consonant -y, change the -y to -i and add -ed, e.g. study – studied, try – tried
with one-syllable verbs ending in vowel-single consonant, double the consonant and add -ed, e.g.
stop – stopped, plan – planned
with two-syllable verbs ending in a vowel-single consonant, if the stress is on the last syllable, double
the consonant and add -ed, e.g. refer – referred. But: offer – offered, travel – traveled
