Test 2.

SMJC 2202 Sec 02 21 Dec. 2018

1. (A). Consider the following oxidation/reduction reactions:

(i). Write each net process in terms of two balanced half-reactions.

(ii). Express each half-reaction as a reduction.
(iii). Arrange the half-reactions in
(iv). In order of decreasing effectiveness as electron acceptors.

(B). Calculate the potential of a platinum electrode immersed in a solution that is:
(i). Buffered to a pH of 6.50 and saturated with H2(g) at 1.00 atm. (Eo = 0.000)
(ii). The 0.0650 M in Sn(SO4)2 and 3.5 × 10-3 M in SnSO4. (Eo = 0.154)

2. A solution containing the complex formed between Bi(III) and thiourea has a molar
absorptivity of 9.32 × 103 L cm-1 mol-1 at 470 nm.
(a) What is the absorbance of a 5.67 × 10-5 M solution of the complex at 470 nm in a
1.00-cm cell?
(b) What is the percent transmittance of the solution described in (a)?
(c) What is the molar concentration of the complex in a solution that has the
absorbance described in (a) when measured at 470 nm in a 2.50-cm cell?

3. (a) Explain the different between mass spectra of the sedative pentobarbital from
electron ionization and chemical ionization. (M, m/z 226)

(b) There are several systems of mass analyzer with different characteristics. Answer
to the questions related to Quadrupole and TOF (time of flight) mass analyzer
systems.
(i) Explain the principle to analyze the mass of ions for Quadrupole and TOF,
respectively.
(ii) GC (gas chromatography) and HPLC (high performance liquid
chromatography) combined with mass spectrometer is very useful
analytical instruments. Relate which mass analyzer (Quadrupole or TOF)
combines with which chromatography (GC or HPLC). Explain the reason
based on characteristics of mass analyzers.
