Tekla Structures Glossary

March 2018

© 2018 Trimble Solutions Corporation

FOREWORD
The Tekla Structures glossary is intended for technical writers, user interface designers, marketng
people, trainers, and the end users of the sofware. The glossary aims to facilitate communicatons
related to Tekla Structures by clarifying various concepts and terms.
The glossary explains the contents of 571 Tekla Structures related concepts as they are used in Tekla
Structures. The relatons between concepts are illustrated by means of concept diagrams, and the
defnitons and supplementary notes offer an effortless way to familiari썡e oneself with Tekla
Structures terminology. The glossary gives also different types of recommendatons on the usage of
the English terms.
Terms have been compiled broadly, since the constructon terminology is not fully established, but a
number of synonyms (that is, words with the same meaning) exist. In such cases the glossary gives
frst the terms used in the Tekla Structures user interface and the Tekla Structures related
communicaton.
The Tekla Structures glossary is maintained as the sofware develops. In January 2018 Tekla
Structures glossary was revised with new and updated concepts that mainly relate to the latest
updates in Tekla Structures, including additons related to spiral beams and rebar sets.
The glossary was frst published in 2009. In earlier revisions from spring 2010 to autumn 2016
numerous concepts were updated to refect the development of Tekla Structures and the established
use of terms in the user interface, and on the basis of comments received from the glossary users.
Several people from both Tekla Structures development and the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK
(Sanastokeskus TSK) have partcipated in compiling the glossary and given their expertse on both
Tekla Structures and on terminology work to the project. In additon, a number of Tekla Structures
specialists have taken part in the glossary project in the form of comments and feedback. Their
expertse on different subject maters has proved to be indispensable for the project.
Any questons and comments related to the glossary can be sent to:

STRUCTURE AND LAYOUT OF THE GLOSSARY

Groupiog of the glonnary aod nearchiog for termn

The glossary has been grouped thematcally into chapters, and the aim has been to place related
concepts in each chapter close to each other.
At the end of the glossary, there is an alphabetcal index. In additon to the preferred and deprecated
terms, the indexes also include other terms closely related to the concept in queston. These other
terms have been provided with a reference to the preferred term and its number. The concepts have
been numbered in the glossary.
The entry describing reference model is cited below as an example with explanatons:
199 - consecutve entry number
default view - English terms; the most preferred term is
given frst
not: † part basic view; † component basic view not: = the synonym does not have the same
meaning as the preferred term or is
linguistcally erroneous

or component (2) and whose view full stop)
plane is defned by the coordinate - italics = refer to a concept defned elsewhere
system of the selected part or in this glossary; italics serve as a link to the
component (2) concept in queston
Tekla Structures creates four - notes supplementng the defniton
default views: front, top, end, - further informaton on the concept,
and perspectve. Each default examples, informaton on the use of the
view can have its own view terms, and so on.

Ioterpretog diagramn
The concept diagrams and the glossary are intended to support each other. The diagrams illustrate
the relatonships between concepts and help the reader to understand enttes. They do not portray
any individual situaton, event, or system, and they should not be confused with, for example,
organisaton charts.
The concept relatons appearing in this glossary and their established notatons are described in the
following:

Concept
• concepts defned in the glossary are represented inside a frame by a preferred term and a
defniton, for example as follows:
assembly
building object that
represents a structure
that consists of one or
several parts and
possibly other objects (1)

• the diagrams also include auxiliary terms, which are represented inside a frame but not
printed in boldface, or auxiliary defnitons; they facilitate the interpretaton of the diagrams
but are not defned in the glossary
• the diagrams do not include any synonyms or notes (given in the glossary)

Generic relaton (line that ends with a triangle )

• between a broader superordinate concept (associatve annotaton object) and a narrower
subordinate concept (dimension and mark)
• the subordinate concept has all the characteristcs of the superordinate concept and at least
one additonal characteristc, and it covers a smaller set of objects than the superordinate
concept
• a subordinate concept can be regarded as a special case of the superordinate concept
• the triangle points towards the superordinate concept, for example:

associative
annotation object
annotation object that
is updated according to
the changes made to
the related model
object

dimension mark
associative annotation associative annotation
object that represents object that is used for
building object the identification of an
measurements individual building
object and that displays
a set of property
elements that the user
has selected

8
Parttve relaton (line that ends with a diamond )
• subordinate concepts relate to parts of the whole to which the superordinate concept relates
• the subordinate concept does not have the characteristcs of the superordinate concept as in
a generic concept system
• the diamond points to the superordinate concept
• multplicity in a parttve relaton is represented by a number followed by two dots and an
asterisk *, where * designates any number larger than 1 (eg. 1..*); one or more such parts
are typically needed to form a whole; if the multplicity of the parts is not essental for the
concept in queston, the notaton referring to the number of parts is lef out
• nested assembly, for example, consists of a parent assembly and one or several sub-
assemblies, for example:
nested assembly
assembly that consists
of several assemblies
on many assembly
levels

1..*

parent assembly sub-assembly

assembly in a nested assembly in a nested
assembly that is assembly that is
superordinate to subordinate to a parent
assemblies on the lower assembly
assembly level

Associatve relaton (line without a symbol)

• a wide range of concept relatons that cannot be classifed as generic or parttve
• for example, relatons based on tme, locaton, functon, tool, or origin
• the type of the relaton is usually clarifed by the linguistc form of the defniton or by the
note
• for example, the relatons between assembly, assembly hierarchy, and assembly level are
associatve:

assembly hierarchy
assembly
arrangement of
building object that
assemblies that
represents a structure
describes the
that consists of one or
manufacture and assembly level
several parts and
erecting of the actual assembly’s place in the
possibly other objects (1)
assembly to be built assembly hierarchy

Multdimensional concept system (line that is connected to a criterion of subdivision)

• the superordinate concept leads to different selectons of subordinate concepts when different
criteria of subdivision are used; the criteria are represented in frameless text
• subordinate concepts from several different dimensions can be combined to form new concepts
• subordinate concepts that belong to a single dimension (those indicated by the same criterion
of subdivision), are always mutually exclusive

9
• in a multdimensional generic relaton, the relaton from the criterion of subdivision to the
superordinate concept is represented with a line with a triangle and the criterion of subdivision
is marked in the middle of the line:

model object
object (1) that is
represented in a model

• in a multdimensional parttve relaton, the relaton from the criterion of subdivision to the
superordinate concept, that is the whole, is represented with a diamond symbol and the
criterion of subdivision is marked in the middle of the line:

1 BASIC CONCEPTS

1.1 Modeliog with Tekla Structuren

1
Tekla Structuren
BIM sofware for organi썡atons that operate in design, detailing, manufacturing, and constructon
Tekla Structures includes speciali썡ed configuratons for structural engineers, steel detailers and
fabricators, precast concrete detailers and manufacturers, as well as contractors.

2
BIM; buildiog ioformatoo modeliog
process of modelinig and communicatng the structure of a building in detail to beneft the entre
constructon life cycle
BIM facilitates the exchange and use of building informaton in a digital format.

3
modeliog
simulaton of an object (1), a system, or a process that exists or will exist in the real world
The product of modeling is a model (1).

4
model (2)
patern of an object (1), a system, or a process that exists or will exist in the real world
5
model (1); Tekla Structuren model
buildinig informaton model that is built with Tekla Structures and that represents a structure to be
constructed, containing informaton needed to manufacture and construct the structure, and other
informaton related to the project
A model (1) is the single source of informaton for drawinigs (1) and other model outputs, such
as reports and NC fles. This ensures that the informaton in drawings (1) and reports is always
up to date, since they react to modifcatons in the model (1) and are updated accordingly.
Tekla Structures supports multple users working concurrently on the same model (1), even in
different locatons.
A model (1) can be utli썡ed in other sofware.

6
refereoce model
model (2) which the designer can use as an aid when building another model (2)
A reference model is created in Tekla Structures or in other sofware and can be inserted to
Tekla Structures. The reference model appears together with the model (1) but it is not
modifed by Tekla Structures. The user can snap to reference model points (1).
For example, an architectural model, a plant design model, or a heatng, ventlatng, and air-
conditoning (HVAC) model can be a reference model.

12
Tekla Structures glossary – 2018-01-19

7
comparinoo net
set of object propertes that are used for detectng changes in reference models
Tekla Structures compares different versions of the reference model based on a comparison
set, which tells if a change in a property is considered a change.

8
drawiog (2)
building contract document that shows, in graphic or pictorial form, the design, locaton, and
dimension of the elements of a project
9
drawiog (1); Tekla Structuren drawiog
drawinig (2) that includes the output of the selected informaton in a model (1) or a part of the
model (1) and other informaton related to the model (1) and the project
Drawings (1) react to modifcatons in the model (1) and are updated accordingly.
Tekla Structures includes the following types of drawings (1): sinigle-part drawinigs, assembly
drawinigs, cast unit drawinigs, igeneral arranigement drawinigs, and multdrawinigs. Tekla
Structures creates drawings (1) using the drawing propertes defned for each type of a
drawing (1).
Every drawing (1) is made up of a drawinig layout and drawinig views.

10
report
model output that is represented as a list of informaton for the entre model (1), selected objects (1),
or selected drawinigs (1)
Reports react to modifcatons in the model (1).
Reports are for quantty surveying or any other measurement purpose.

11
project
organi썡ed acton which aims at constructng a structure, or a complex of structures
A project can include several models (2), for example models (1) created with Tekla Structures.

1.2 Tekla Structuren architecture

12
Tekla Structuren coofguratoo; coofguratoo
Tekla Structures sofware set-up for a specifc user group
Tekla Structures license is a permission to actvate and use certain Tekla Structures
confguratons. A Tekla Structures confguraton consists of a set of features that the user is
enttled to based on the license agreement, and is the commercial part of Tekla Structures.
There are several Tekla Structures confguratons, for example, Steel Detailing, Precast
Concrete Detailing, and Engineering.

13
Tekla Structuren eoviroomeot
region- or company-specifc settinigs and informaton that are predefned in Tekla Structures or that
are defned by the user
To be able to use Tekla Structures, the user must install the sofware and for region-specifc
setngs at least one Tekla Structures environment. The sofware installaton includes the
common and blank project environments and the global setngs. The common environment
and global setngs are the basis for all other environments except US Imperial and US Metric.
Property fles form the largest part of a Tekla Structures environment. A Tekla Structures
environment consists of, for example, profle cataloigs, part property fles, and drawinig
settinigs.

14
commoo eoviroomeot
Tekla Structures environment that forms a basis for other environments
The common environment is included in the sofware installaton and includes the global
settinigs, macros, symbols (2), items, and fonts, for example. The common environment is not
used as basis in the US Imperial and US Metric environments.

15
default eoviroomeot
Tekla Structures environment that contains basic example settinigs that are not related to any
standards specifc to a country or a region
16
local eoviroomeot
Tekla Structures environment that contains settinigs that are based on country- or region-specifc
standards and are different from the global setngs
The local environment setngs may override the global setngs.

17
blaok project
Tekla Structures environment that contains only generic content and is used as a basis for customi썡ed
environments
The blank project contains, for example, parametric profles and undefned materials, and it
can be used for gathering region-, company-, or project-specifc settinigs, tools, and
informaton. The blank project comes with Tekla Structures sofware installaton.
Tekla Warehouse can be used to download content to a blank project.

15
Tekla Structures glossary – 2018-01-19

18
role
user group profle in a certain Tekla Structures environment that limits the available fles and settinigs
In Tekla Structures, different roles may be available in each Tekla Structures environment.
Typically the following roles are available: all, concrete contractor, general constructor,
engineer, precast concrete detailer, rebar detailer, and steel detailer.

19
feature
part of Tekla Structures functonality that is maintained and owned by Trimble Solutons and that is
included in the Tekla Structures installaton
20
exteonioo
part of Tekla Structures functonality that is developed with or without the help of Trimble Solutons
in order to extend the capability of Tekla Structures, and that is meant to be shared with other users,
but that is not included in the Tekla Structures installaton
In Tekla Structures, extensions are .NET applicatons (.exe), pluig-ins (.dll), macros (.cs), custom
components, and RPC macros (system components, DevKit macros).

21
compooeot (1)
part of Tekla Structures functonality that is used for creatng a group of model objects that are easy
to model and modify as a single unit
Components (1) are located in the applicatons and components cataloig.
Components (1) can be used for creatng, for example, parts, bolts (1), and reinforcinig bars.
The created component (2) adapts to changes in the model (1). For example, Tekla Structures
automatcally modifes a connecton if the user modifes the parts it connects.

22
macro
saved series of actons that includes instructons for a program
Macros are located in the applicatons and components cataloig. They are recorded or created
manually and stored as .cs fle in a folder defned with the advanced opton
XS_MACRO_DIRECTORY.
Macros can, for example, be used for creatng drawinigs (1) or reports.
Macros are sometmes used to run an applicaton.

23
migratoo wizard
tool used when taking into use an updated version of Tekla Structures for copying settinigs defned by
the user in the earlier version
The migraton wi썡ard can be used to copy setngs included in initalizaton fles.

105
prentrenned coocrete
concrete structure in which internal stresses have been introduced to increase its ability to withstand
tension and stress that will be produced by loads
Prestressed concrete is reinforced concrete (1). In reinforced concrete (1), prestressing is
commonly introduced by tensioning the tendons.

106
reioforced coocrete (1)
concrete structure which contains reinforcement designed on the assumpton that the concrete and
reinforcement act together in resistng forces
Reinforcement in reinforced concrete (1) is usually steel bars, wires, or welded wire fabric. It
may also be structural fber of some other material.
In Tekla Structures, reinforced concrete (1) is modeled with reinforcement objects.

107

1.6.1 Setogn aod properten

154
netogn pl
collecton of choices defned by a sofware user or predefned in the sofware in order to control
operatons of the sofware
Setngs may affect general functons of the sofware (see igeneral settinigs) or a specifc
functon. Examples of setngs in Tekla Structures include display setngs, numbering setngs,
and color setngs. Also advanced optons are a category of setngs.
The user can defne setngs, for example, by entering a value or by selectng a value among
the available ones.
Giving values to propertes also infuences operatons of the sofware. Therefore, values given
to propertes are also regarded as setngs. For example, values given to igrid propertes form
part of general modelinig settinigs.
The term setngs is sometmes used as a synonym for propertes. The term propertes is used
to refer to real-world enttes, such as parts or details. The term setngs is used to refer to
sofware operatons, for example rotaton setngs and display setngs. The term propertes is
used when the viewpoint is that of a single object (1) and the term setngs is used when the
viewpoint is more general.

155
geoeral netogn pl; optoon pl
settinigs that are used to control the general functons of the sofware
For example, autosave interval and mouse setngs are general setngs in Tekla Structures.
General setngs can be saved for each model (1) or as a standard fle.
In Tekla Structures, general setngs are defned in the Optons dialog box.

156
advaoced optoon pl
settinigs used to customi썡e Tekla Structures for specifc companies, standards, users, or user groups
In Tekla Structures, advanced optons are setngs that are used, for example, in a specifc
project or geographical area, or by a specifc company.
In Tekla Structures, advanced optons usually begin with the initals XS and are followed by the
name of the functon, for example XS_BACKGROUND_COLOR.

157
role-npecifc advaoced optoon pl
advanced optons that work for all users with the same role
158
uner-npecifc advaoced optoon pl
advanced optons that affect all models (1) the user has
User-specifc advanced optons set the user’s personal preferences, for example, the
background color of the model views.
User-specifc advanced optons are saved in the optons.bin fle.

50
Tekla Structures glossary – 2018-01-19

159

Examples of modeling setngs include rotaton setngs, color setngs, transparency setngs,
display setngs and numbering setngs.

163
properten pl
collecton of characteristcs of an object (1) in a sofware or applicaton
The selecton of propertes related to each object (1) is usually predefned. For example,
propertes related to parts include name, profle and material. The sofware user can also
create certain propertes (see user-defned atributes).
In Tekla Structures the values related to propertes can be given in a property pane or a dialog
box.
The term settinigs is sometmes used as a synonym for propertes.

164
object properten pl
propertes associated with an object type
Usually a single object property includes a default value that the user can modify.

165

177
<Tekla Structures>
annociatvity
drawinig (1) property that represents the linking of drawinig objects to model objects so that the
former are updated according to changes made to the later in the modelinig mode
In Tekla Structures, associatvity only relates to one type of drawing objects, namely
associatve objects. These can be buildinig objects and associatve annotaton objects.
In Tekla Structures, the term ’associatvity’ has traditonally been used when referring to the
linking of drawing objects to model objects. In other modeling contexts, however, the term
associatvity may refer to any kind of linking between model objects or parts of a model (1) by
using dependencies (1).

178
adaptvity
automatc linking of model objects to another model object
For example, reinforcement and surface treatment automatcally adapt to the changes made to
the part they are linked with.

179
<Tekla Structures>
parametric modeliog
modelinig that uses parametric variables to defne various propertes
In Tekla Structures, parametric modeling is used in custom components and parametric user-
defned profles.
Parametric modeling can be used for defning a model object’s geometry, locaton, and
relatonship to other model objects. Parametric modeling may also use dependencies (1)
between the model objects to update the model objects.
The term ’parametric modeling’ has traditonally been used in Tekla Structures as defned
above. In other modeling contexts, the term ’associatve parametric modeling’ may be used
(see also how associatvity is defned in Tekla Structures).

180
magoetc; magoetnm
igrid and constructon object property which enables atachinig adaptve model objects so that the
atached model objects follow when part of the grid or constructon object is moved
See also adaptvity.

181
verb
atach
to relate a model object to another model object or to a point (1) so that the related model object
follows when the other model object or point (1) is moved or deleted
For example, reinforcement can be atached to a concrete beam and a load can be atached to
a part.

56
Tekla Structures glossary – 2018-01-19

182
verb
biod
to relate a model object point (1) or plane to an object (1) plane or constructon plane so that they
change according to the changes made to the object (1) plane or constructon plane
For example, distance variables can be used to bind handles, fttinigs, and cuts to constructon
planes, so that the custom component can adapt to different situatons, such as different
shapes and si썡es of component main part profle.

183
biodiog
geometric dependency (1) between model objects and model object planes or constructon planes
In Tekla Structures, bindings are used to defne locatons using distance variables.

184
equatoo
dependency (1) that determines that two things are equal
In Tekla Structures, equatons are used to defne values for parametric propertes.

185
formula
rule stated in a mathematcal language
Formula is part of an equaton.

1.9.1 Coordioate nyntemn

212
global coordioate nyntem
coordinate system that refects the entre space of a model (1)
A green cube represents the global coordinate system and lies at the global point of origin in
the 3D view.

213
local coordioate nyntem
coordinate system that refects the current work plane or drawinig view plane
The local coordinate system is represented in a model (1) by a symbol with three axes (x, y, and
썡). This symbol indicates the directon of the model (1). It is located in the lower right corner of
the model view.
In a drawinig (1), the local coordinate system symbol has two axes.

214
uner coordioate nyntem; UCS
local coordinate system defned by the user and used in a drawinig view
User coordinate system makes it easier to place drawinig objects, because the user can place
the drawing objects relatve to a user-defnable point of origin, or a base point in the drawing
view.
Tekla Structures displays the user coordinate system symbol in the current drawing view when
the user creates, copies, moves, or modifes drawing objects.

concrete part representng a structure that projects from the face of a concrete part and that serves
as a support for an overhanging part and connects the parts
269
beam
part that represents a linear extruded structure in a mainly hori썡ontal positon
In Tekla Structures, beams are created with two points (1).
In some contexts, for example in analysis, the term beam object may be used to refer to beams
and columns.

270
orthogooal beam
beam created perpendicular to a work plane in a picked locaton
Beam is only orthoigonal in the creaton stage. Afer its creaton, an orthogonal beam can be
modifed as if it were a beam or column.

271
npiral beam
beam that follows the form of a helix and is defned by a start point (1), center point (1) and the
rotaton axis
Spiral beams can be concrete spiral beams or steel spiral beams. They can be used to create
spiral staircases, complex architectural structures, and concrete parking ramps, for example.
Spiral beam can rise from the work plane or be fat. If the spiral beam rises, the total rise is
defned between the start and the end point (1).

272
curved beam
beam that follows the form of an arc
Steel curved beams can be created by picking three points (1), where a point (1) between the
start point (1) and the end point (1) defnes the arc. Both steel and concrete curved beams can
be created by adjustng radius in beam propertes or by using polybeams.

273
columo
part that represents a linear extruded structure in a mainly vertcal positon
In Tekla Structures, columns are created with one point (1).
In some contexts, for example in analysis, the term beam object may be used to refer to

553
aoalynin member
analysis model object that Tekla Structures creates between two nodes of an analysis bar
Every physical part that the user selects for inclusion in the analysis model produces one or
more analysis members. A single physical part produces several analysis members if the
physical part intersects with other physical parts. Tekla Structures splits the physical part at the
intersecton points (1) of the member axes. For example, a physical model beam that supports
two other beams is split into three analysis members between nodes.
Some analysis applicatons use analysis members whereas others use analysis bars.
