What is it

- Also known as Operation Iceburg


- Between the U.S. Marine and Army Corp and the Imperial Japanese Army
- Largest amphibious assault in the pacific.
Casualties

- The Americans suffered over 49,000 casualties that includes 12,520 soldiers killed in the battle\
- The Japanese suffered even worse that the United States, consisting of 110,000 deaths.
- between 40,000 to 100,000 citizens of Okinawa were killed as a result to the battle
What made me think of this topic?

- This topic reminds me of my grandfather who was a member of the tank division for the U.S. Army
during the Vietnam war. He encountered some of the same situations many of these soldiers did and was
forced to hold his position after a couple of his men were killed.

- As a result of any war or battle, awards are given out to a very specific selection of soldiers.
- A purple heart, for example, is an award that is given to soldiers who were either injured or have
lost their lives in the war or battle they were a part of.
