practicing new skills
#1 How is it to be human?

What are the characteristics of the human person that set him apart from
other creatures?

ABSTRACTION
Man- is the general term commonly used to refer to the entire human race.
Human- refers to man as species – Homo sapiens or modern human beings.
Human being- is also used to distinguish man from other animals.
Person- refers to a human being granted recognition of certain rights, protection,
responsibilities, and dignity, above all.
For philosophers human person refers to the totality of an individual, possessing
awareness, self-determination and the capacity to interact with others and with
himself or herself.
E. Discussing new
Human nature- refers to the characteristics that distinguish humans from all
concepts and
other creatures. Example of this characteristics include thinking, feeling, and
practicing new skills acting. These characteristics form the essence of humanity, and without them, an
#2 individual may not be considered a human person.
Self-Awareness
refers to the person having a clear perception of oneself, including his/her
thoughts, emotions, identity, and actions.
A human person knows that he or she is living an experience and is an active
participant in this experience.
Becoming aware of oneself means having the knowledge not just of our
surroundings but also other human beings
“We are the only creatures here on earth who can know that we know”
3

We are able to experience inner world because we have interiority.

Self-Determination
refers to the capability of persons to make choices and decisions based on their
own preferences, monitor and regulate their actions, and be goal-oriented and
self-directed.
Freewill- enables us to do actions whenever we want to and make self
determination possible
“All our actions have consequences”
“Human actions complete the person, they reveal person’s true nature”
Externality
refers to the capability to reach out and interact with others and the world.
Dignity
The final trait that distinguishes the human person is DIGNITY. This refers to the
innate right to be valued and respected.
Dignity is not defined by outside forces or characteristics such as intelligence,
ability, skills, or attractiveness.
We uphold dignity by doing good. We should look at others with dignity. They
have the right to be treated well and respected.
The recognition of the dignity of the person is the basis of the recognition of
human rights
