by Ferdinand Magellan. It was planted upon their arrival in Cebu on March 15,
1521 that was marked the birth of Christianity in the land. Old people believed
that the cross has a miraculous healing powers. Because of that the government

This is Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño Church. As Magellan's expedition headed for Cebu
and found the island very hospitable. He made Cebu the base of his exploration,
Christianization and conquests. On April 14, 1521 as Ferdinand Magellan presented
three gifts which is a cross, an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Santo Niño as a part

to the Holy Image. According to the local legend, the survival of the statue was seen as a
sign of miracle by the colonizers and ever since it has been believed to have miraculous
powers. In 1965 the historic Santo Nino Church was renovated for the observance of the
Fourth Centenary of the Christianization of the Philippines held in Cebu City.

3rd Destination
Fort San Pedro

Commentary:
We are now at the Fort San Pedro (or the Fuerte de San Pedro in Spanish) is a military
defense structure in Cebu. It was built by the Spaniards under the command of Miguel
Lopez de Legazpi. The original fort built right after the arrival of Legaspi and his
expedition was made of wood. It was then replaced in the 17th century with a stone fort
to repel Muslim raiders. At the end of the 19th century during the Philippine Revolution,
the fort was attacked and taken by the Filipino Revolutionaries who used it as a
stronghold. It is triangular in shape. It has two sides facing the sea and the third side is
facing the land. The sides facing the sea were safeguarded with cannon and the front
with a strong fence made with wood. Its three bastions are named La Concepcion
(southwest), Ignacio de Loyola (southeast), and San Miguel (northeast). It has a fourteen
cannons were settled in their locations.
4th Destination
Museo Sugbo

Commentary:
This is the Museo Sugbo is located in the former Cebu Provincial Detention and
Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC). It was once called “Carcel de Cebu”, the provincial jail of
Cebu. In December 2004, the CPDRC was transferred to a bigger and more modern area.
The carcel was then converted into a warehouse of Cebuano Heritage making it the
Museo Sugbo. It is now the Cebu Provincial Museum. It was designed by Domingo de
Escondrillas in 1869 (he used to be the only architect in Cebu that time). It was originally
proposed to be the main prison for the Visayan District because of its somewhat
considerable size when it was constructed. The construction started in 1871. It was
believed that the coral blocks from the demolished Parian Church were used to build
parts of the gaol. In its 135 years of history, the gaol did not just accommodate criminals
but also the Katipuneros during the revolution. During the early American period, the
carcel served as a stable for horses used for competition at the Hipodromo racetrack.
But it was eventually used again as prison for the city and province as well. Guerillas
were also imprisoned here during the Japanese regime after being tortured by the
Japanese secret police.

is 270 meters above sea level. The latter is the only temple open to worshippers and
non-worshippers. The entrance of this temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The
temple includes a chapel, library, souvenir shop, and a wishing well. It also has a
spacious balcony that has an access to the scenic of the city. It is the center of worship
for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher,

gods to grant one’s wish. This kind of ritual includes washing hands, going inside the
chapel barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood.

The temple was constructed in the year 2012. It was built as a symbol of undying
love and never ending devotion of Teodorico Adarna to his wife Leah Villa
Albino-Adarna. The Roman inspired edifice showcases not only a labyrinthine

Sirao Garden

Commentary:
We are here now at Sirao Garden or the Mini Amsterdam. It was called mini Amsterdam
because of its fascinating rows of colorful flowers line up in large and spacious fields like
the Amsterdam. Variety of flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, and the most famous tulips
give an astonishing picture that is very attractive to tourists especially to those who love
nature. It is the famous “Sirao Flower Farm” located in a mountain barangay just few
minutes from JY, Lahug, Cebu City. It all started when a couple planted flowering plants
to be harvested and sold on All Soul’s Day. They then noticed that their garden is
attracting visitors so they decided not to cut them at all. The incursion of tourists
encouraged them to plant more. The more plants and flowers in the garden meant
more visitors too. Aside from Celosias, other variety of flowers are grown in the farm.
Flowers like sunflower, chrysanthemum, daisy and aster are among the flowers that are
