7. A suspension bridge of 100m span and roadway 6m has two hinged stiffening girder supported by
two cables, has a dip of 10m. The dead load of the bridge is 5 kN/m2 and the live load is 10 kN/m2
which covers left half of the span. Determine the SF and BM for the girder at 25m from the left end.

8. Find the maximum possible span for a cable supported at the same level allowing a central dip of
1/10th of the span and a permissible stress of 150 N/mm2. Steel weighs 78000 N/cum. Assume that the

9. A cable of span 100m has its ends at a height of 8m and 15m above the lowest point of the cable. It
carries a UDL of 10 kN/m unit horizontal run of the span. Determine the horizontal and vertical

10. A bridge cable is suspended from towers 80m apart and carries a load of 30 kN/m on the entire span.
If the maximum sag is 8m, calculate the maximum tension in the cable. If the cable is supported by
saddles which are stayed by wires inclined at 300 to the horizontal, determine the forces acting on the
towers. If the same inclination of back stay passes over pulley, determine the forces on the towers.

11. A cable is arranged between two supports at the same level. The span of the cable is 150m and its sag
is 15m. The cable carries a UDL of intensity of 1.5 kN/m of horizontal length. Determine the change
in the horizontal tension if the temperature rises by 300 C taking α= 5 x 10-6 /0C.

14. A cord supported at its ends 40m apart carries loads of 20 kN, 10 kN and 12 kN at distances of 10m,
20m and 30m from the left end. If the point on the cord where 10 kN load is supported is 13m below
the level of end supports, determine

ii) Tensions in different parts of the cord
iii) Total length of the cord
15. A cable carrying a load of 10 kN/m run of horizontal span is stretched between supports 100m apart.
The supports are at the same level and the central dip is 8m. Find the greatest and least tensions in the
