MARS 2000

Main Modifications DV
Dec. 2015

DEV/UG/Mars2000/M005 rev20

Version 2.9d (December 31, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• According to BV Rules Steel Ships Amendments of January 2016, the following elements
have been modified:
• When the hull structure is additionally verified for compliance with finite element
analysis and spectral fatigue assessment, it is now possible to apply material factor k
= 0.66 for Steel with ReH = 390 (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch4 S1 T2)
• The application of impact pressures in partially filled tanks has been changed (ref: BV
STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch5 S6 2.5.1 & 2.5.2)
• The values of the Minimum Net Thickness of plating in the Aft and Fore parts are now
to be calculated with L limited to 300 m (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S1 T7, T10,
T11 & S2 T7)
• The value of the hSI parameter for the stern impact pressure has been modified (ref:
BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S2 4.2.1)
• WARNING: Some testing still water pressures have also evolved (ref: BV STEEL
SHIPS – PtB Ch5 S6 T14). In MARS 2000, they are handled by an equivalent “Load
test height” which is an input in the compartment’s load data. Please modify your
databases accordingly!
• In the Pressure Viewer, the Printing of the pw and as a consequence of the ptot was bugged
leading to all 0 values. This has been corrected. The Exporting functionality was not affected
by this problem

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)

• The buckling check is now performed everywhere on the cross section (when compression of
course) instead of just for side shell elements (ref: NR527 S2 5.5)
• For icebreakers, there was problems with the application of the corrosion, this has been
clarified (ref: NR527 S2 T8)

Version 2.9c (October 08, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• Specific assessments done in dredging conditions as per BV STEEL SHIPS – PtD Ch13 S2
have been added for ships with service notation “Dredger”
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)

• The hull girder strength assessments (ref: NR527 S2 5.3 & 5.4) were computed but never
displayed to users on strakes and stiffeners outside the ice hull areas. This was corrected
• For icebreakers, the x_FM value, fore limit of the ice mid-body hull area, was wrongly
evaluated. This has been corrected
• The computed theta angle values (ref: NR527 S2 Fig4 & Symbols) have been added to the
Basic Ship Data’s Polar prints

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Section Edit module:
• A crash has been corrected in the adding of a new transverse stiffener on a cross section
positioned close to the first frame (on a database with a frame table defined)
In the Section assessments (Rule) module:
• The Print Drawing figure of the Stresses result view is now done without the position and label
of the compartments center of gravity (to have them included now the option to display
compartments must be chosen)

Version 2.9b (September 11, 2015)

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)
• The bottom longitudinal stiffeners that should be checked following the same formulas as the
transverse stiffeners (ref: NR527 S2 7.5) were wrongly following the formulas for longitudinal
stiffeners on side (ref: NR527 S2 7.6). MARS2000 was therefore following the first edition of
the NR527 (February 2007), and had missed this change done in edition September 2010 to
be conform to the IACS UR-I on Polar Class. Please note that:
• Overruling the current NR527 contents with IACS UR-I (ref: NR527 S2 7.5.3):
coefficient kz is taken to 0 when the ordinary stiffener is arranged with end bracket
• Overruling the current NR527 and IACS UR-I contents, BUREAU VERITAS
interpretation is now for longitudinal bottom stiffeners that the At and W p rule values
are to be evaluated with Peak Pressure Factor CPS instead of CPM
• For Icebreakers, the hull areas rule extents (ref: NR527 S2 Fig2) were wrongly defined with
inverted limits (in the Basic Ship Data the xBA and xMA values were mixed up): as a
consequence, wrong longitudinal region was observed as well as a crash in the bow area’s
shape coefficient computation
• Peak pressure factor for longitudinal stiffeners, CPS (ref: NR527 S2 T10) was computed with
the effective span instead of the web frame spacing (full span between supports)
• For transverse stiffeners, the local span, ℓ, was wrongly defined with bracket reduction
(whereas in the BV Rules there should be no bracket reduction on effective span, ref: BV
STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch4 S3 3.2.1)

Harmonized CSR
• The effective breadth of attached plating to be considered for stiffeners (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch3
S7 1.3.1) is defined as minimum between spacing and 200 * ℓ, ℓ being defined as the full
length of stiffener between support (no reduction) (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch3 S7 Symbols), but ℓ
was wrongly taken for the effective breadth evaluation as the effective bending span. The
consideration of minimum 200 * ℓ was missing for computation geometrical properties of
stiffeners with attached plating when done in gross scantling or when the stiffener is multi-
span. This has been corrected

2/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Section assessments (Rule) and in the Bulkhead Arrangement assessments (Rule) modules:
• The equivalent angle for a corroded bulb is now based on the corroded height of stiffener
equal to the gross height minus the corrosion margin on stiffener (what was done before) plus
half the total corrosion on associated plating (that has been added, to be closer to how other
types of stiffener are corroded)
In the Section assessments (Rule) module:
• If a cross section was defined with two nodes positioned at the same point, there was a
potential problem in the left and right compartments detection, leading to corrosion or applied
pressures inconsistencies. This has been corrected

Version 2.9a (July 17, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• According to BV Rules Steel Ships Amendments of July 2015, the following elements have
been modified:
• The minimum value of sea dynamic pressures, for load cases "a" & "c", is now
multiplied by φ1φ2 factor for side above waterline elements (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS –
PtB Ch5 S5 T2 & T3) and there is no more specific lateral pressure on sides of
superstructures for Roro Cargo, Roro Passenger nor Passenger ships (ref: BV STEEL
SHIPS – PtD Ch1 S2 5.2.2, PtD Ch11 S3 5.2.2, PtD Ch12 S3 5.4.2)
• Minimum Net Thickness of plating: now the values from the main table must be
calculated with L limited to 300 m (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch7 S1 2.2.1 & T2)
• Stern slamming: now only applying for ships with L ≥ 170 m (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS –
BV RSS - PtB Ch8 S2 4.1.1)
• Rule inertia for container ships: the value is now multiplied by n/n1 ratio (ref: BV
STEEL SHIPS – PtD Ch2 S2 7.3.2)
• As the amendments required the review of the rule values for minimum net thickness of
plating, some missing values have been detected and therefore added:
• Side of superstructure which doesn't contribute to the longitudinal strength: added
(ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S4 3.1.2)
• Strakes as web of PSM: double bottom girders added for machinery space (ref: BV
STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S3 T1), single bottom girders added (based on MARS
"keelson & other girders" position code, ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch7 S3 T7 &
Ch8 S3 T2), margin plate added (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch7 S3 T6 & Ch8 S3
T1, machinery space)
• Platform (identified by “lower deck” position code with null bending efficiency) added
for engine room (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch7 S1 T2), Fore part (ref: BV STEEL
SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S1 2.9.1), Aft part (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S2 T7), and
machinery space (other than engine room, ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S3 5.2.1)
• Swash bulkheads in Aft/Fore parts added (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – Ch8 S1 2.10.3 &
S2 T7)
• Passenger ships & Roro passenger ships: special values for side between freeboard
deck and strength deck were missing so added (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtD Ch11
S3 T2 & Ch12 S3 T3)
• Ships for dredging activities: the 5 mm minimum value has been added (ref: BV
STEEL SHIPS – PtD Ch13 S2 6.3.1) as well as the value for transverse bulkhead
plating boundary of hopper well (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtD Ch13 S2 T10)
• Aft/Fore parts: the m boundary coefficient needed for rule section modulus of stiffeners (ref:
BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch8 S1 & S2 Symbols) is now evaluated in function of the stiffeners
end support types input (fixed or simply supported)

3/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

Harmonized CSR
• Now that the CSR H have officially entered into force since July 1st, new databases created
with service notation “Bulk carrier CSR” or “Oil Tanker CSR” will be automatically checked
according to CSR H rules. To phase out the “old” CSR, a temporary option remains to activate
the assessments according to the “old” CSR.
• As since version 2.9 the end support's type of both longitudinal and transverse stiffener are
available as inputs, the effective length of stiffener for buckling, ℓeff (ref: CRS H - Pt1 Ch8 S5
2.3.5), is now properly based on this information (before it was based on bending efficiencies
consideration for longitudinal stiffeners and on brackets presence for transverse stiffeners)
• The hull girder loads distributions were added in the Basic Ship Data (BSD) “Calculations &
Print”
• For transverse stiffeners of cross sections, the effective shear span was wrongly computed
taking into account twice the flat at ends reduction. This has been corrected

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Bulkhead Arrangement Edit module:

• The input of flat at ends on ordinary stiffeners is now possible (in addition to brackets)

In the Bulkhead Arrangement assessments (Rule) module:

• The same reduction of spans as what is done for cross sections is applied on stiffeners where
flat at ends values will be input

In the Section assessments (Rule) module:

• For multi-span transverse stiffeners direct calculation: before the modelling of the equivalent
beam end supports was function of the brackets defined; now supports definition comes
directly from newly added support type on stiffener (available since version 2.9)

Version 2.9 (June 24, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• A regression bug (that appeared at version 2.8g) has been corrected in the Section Edit
module where it was causing the impossibility to create a new wheeled deck load
• In the calculation of the lateral pressure to be applied on sides of superstructures aligned with
side shell below for Roro Cargo, Roro Passenger, Passenger ships (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS –
PtD Ch1 S2 5.2 , Ch11 S3 5.2 , Ch12 S3 5.4) a change has been made to get the correct
value returned for cases where the side shell is too inclined
• Assessment of stiffeners under impact loads: the new input of support’s type on cross section
stiffeners ensures that the evaluation of the actual and rule plastic section modulus is correct
for reduced supports cases (ref: BV STEEL SHIPS – PtB Ch4 S3 3.4.3 + Ch7 S2 3.10)

BV Rules for Offshore Units

• According to new BV Rules for Offshore Units edition of June 2015, the following elements
have been modified:
• The new buckling assessment for strakes (ref: BV OFFSHORE – PtD Ch1 S7 2.3.1)
and stiffeners (ref: BV OFFSHORE – PtD Ch1 S7 4.1.1) linking to BV NI 615 has
been implemented. Note that a miscellaneous computation option is available to
perform the buckling assessment as per the BV Steel Ships rules, but that it will lead
to an evaluation outside the scope of the new BV Offshore rules

4/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

• The assessment of strakes and stiffeners under impact loads has been modified (ref:
BV OFFSHORE – PtD Ch1 S7 2.1.1 & 3.6.1)
• For fatigue, there are changes in the partial safety factors (ref: BV OFFSHORE – PtD
Ch1 S7 6.4.2 & 6.4.9)

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)

• Transverse stiffeners assessment:
• The new input of support’s type on cross section stiffeners completes the computation
of the A1A coefficient which needs the identification of a "simple support outside ice
strengthened areas" (ref: NR527 S2 7.5.3 & Fig 11). Before all cases outside the ice
were taking that value which is more severe
• An new input specific for ships with Polar Class notation or service notation
Icebreakers allows to identify if the transverse has load distributing stringer(s) or not:
this allows to get correct evaluation of the CPM coefficient (ref: NR527 S2 T10), before
worse case was taken for all transverses
• The buckling assessment of stiffeners was never activated, it is now performed on the relevant
stiffeners
• Structural stability criteria on welded profiles: b (outstand) / tf was evaluated instead as b / tw,
this has been corrected (ref: NR527 S2 7.4.4)
• A bug that was causing trouble with the input of the specific NR 527 data in the Basic Ship
Data for Icebreakers has been corrected

Harmonized CSR
• According to new CSR for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers edition of January 2015 (for an entry
into force July 2015), the following elements have been modified:
• For the effective shear depth and effective section modulus of stiffeners, the ϕw angle
is now taken as 90° when real angle is greater or equal to 75° (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch3
S7 1.4.3 & 1.4.4)
• In the ultimate strength check the definition of the γDB coefficient for flooded conditions
have been changed (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch5 S3 2.2.1)
• The bilge plating thickness criteria for cross sections outside 0.4 L amidships are now
to follow the criteria for bilge plating within 0.4L amidships (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch6 S4
2.2.3)
• The buckling capacity for EPPs calculation has been updated to the new formulas
(ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch8 S5 2.2.1 & 2.2.3)
• In the Fatigue assessment for Bulk carriers, the deck longitudinal stiffeners are no
more affected by internal dynamic pressures coming from the topside tanks (ref: CSR
H - Pt1 Ch9 S4 4.1.1)
• In the Fatigue assessment, connection types 31 and 32 have got new values for their
stress concentration factors (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch9 S4 T4)
• For Bulk carriers, the criteria on shear area of the side frames of single sided bulk
carriers has been modified (ref: CSR H - Pt2 Ch1 S3 1.1.1)
• Buckling assessment of EPPs bordered by stiffener not fixed at both ends or assessment of
stiffeners not fixed at both ends: the correct evaluation of the Flong correction factor is now
possible due to the new input of support’s type on cross section stiffeners (ref: CSR H - Pt1
Ch8 S5 T2)
• Buckling assessment of transversely stiffened EPPs: the Ky buckling factor was erroneous
when ψ between [1 ; 0] and α > 6, this has been corrected (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch8 S5 T3 case
2)
• The Buckling check in cross sections is now performed also under testing pressures
• Bilge plating thickness criteria within 0.4L amidships: the rule thickness should only be
computed for SEA-1 (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch6 S4 2.2.2), some additional pressures were not
screened out: they have been removed

5/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

• Assessment of stiffeners under bottom slamming: the new input of support’s type on cross
section stiffeners allows for the correct evaluation of the number of plastic hinges for the
actual and rule plastic section modulus calculations (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch3 S7 1.4.6 + Ch10 S1
3.2.5)
• Assessment of longitudinal stiffeners under sloshing pressures, the new input of support’s
type on cross section stiffeners allows for the correct evaluation of F-S or S-S cases (ref: CSR
H - Pt1 Ch10 S4 T2)
• For stiffeners of both cross sections and transverse bulkhead arrangements, it is now possible
to input user values of the effective bending span and the effective shear span, for all the
configurations that MARS2000 cannot properly handle automatically. Those will be later used
in the assessments

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the main (shell) module:
• A new menu “File” “Import from neutral format file” is from now on available. Its first interest
is to import data from NAPA STEEL software. BUREAU VERITAS and NAPA have been
working in a joint project in order to make the transfer of data possible from NAPA STEEL to
MARS2000. Please contact us is you require further assistance on this matter

In the Basic Ship Data module:

• It is now possible to change the value associated to the Young Modulus of STEEL materials
(mostly for use at high temperatures). The input value will be used throughout the software

In the Section Edit module:

• A new input is available in the longitudinal and transverse stiffeners data in order to indicate
whether the supports are fixed (by default) or simply supported. This data is not automatically
linked in the tool to the brackets definition and bending efficiency (for longitudinal stiffener):
users will have to ensure by themselves the coherence of these data.
• A new tool is available to split a panel into two panels (from the Panel input form)

Version 2.8g (March 31, 2015)

BV Rules for Offshore Units
• Since version 2.8d, a bug was introduced by mistake in the writing process of the BSD data to
the MARS database. As a consequence, the Hydrodynamic values input for Scantling draught
were “lost” and replaced by the values at the Ballast draught, which were in turn reset. This
has been corrected. Please check your BSD Hydrodynamic values data!

Harmonized CSR
• The decks loads design load sets have been added to the local scantlings assessments (“DL-
1” & “DL-2” defined in CSR H – Pt1 Ch6 S2 T1)
• A partial sloshing assessment has been added aligned on what was already available for CSR
Oil Tankers ships in MARS2000. So in addition to the known limitations of CSR sloshing, the
following topics are not yet covered: tanks filled with high liquid densities, assessment of cross
sections’ transverse stiffeners, stiffeners not fixed at both ends (CSR H – Pt1 Ch10 S4 T2).
The assessment is triggered by the input of the resonance data for the relevant compartments
• For Oil Tanker ships, the ultimate strength check in harbour conditions was not displayed. This
has been added

6/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Section Edit module:
• The Bilge Wizard now sets default position codes "bottom" / "bilge" / "side shell" to the added
nodes’ segments

Version 2.8f (March 05, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• For container ships, in order to be able to assess the impact of the new draft of the IACS UR-
S4 in the scope of preliminary studies, a new option is available in the BSD Materials tab to
assess a given container ship database with a material factor k equal to 0.66 for Steel 390

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Section assessments (Rule) module:
• In the ratios display view for strakes the switch from the standard view to the detailed view or
vice versa is now possible directly from the graphical area using “Ctrl + Click“

Version 2.8e (February 16, 2015)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• According to BV Rules Steel Ships Amendments of January 2015, the following elements
have been modified:
• Change in the rule inertia of section formula (ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch6 S2 4.4.1)
• The conditions to apply impact pressures in partially filled tanks have been changed
(ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch5 S6 2.5.1 & 2.5.2)
• The criteria that in Edition July 2014 applied for the reinforcement of the flat area of
the bottom aft have been generalized to be used for all impact pressures:
reinforcement of the flat bottom forward area, and partially filled tanks impact
pressures (ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch7 S1 3.6, S2 3.10). They are now separated
under “Impact Thickness” for strakes and “Impact Section Modulus” & “Impact net web
thickness” for ordinary stiffeners entries in the displayed results (as a reminder the
actual section modulus of stiffeners is the plastic one)
• Flooding assessment now performed on freeboard deck elements for Roro Cargo,
Roro passenger & passenger ships (ref: BV RULES – PtD Ch1 S2 5.3.1, Ch11 S3
5.3.1, Ch12 S3 5.5.1)
• There is a new lateral pressure to be applied on sides of superstructures aligned with
side shell below for Roro Cargo, Roro Passenger, Passenger ships (ref: BV RULES –
PtD Ch1 S2 5.2 , Ch11 S3 5.2 , Ch12 S3 5.4)
• Assessment under sloshing and impact pressures is now performed also in partially filled
ballast tanks if relevant (ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch5 S6 2)
• Assessment under impact pressures in upright conditions of tank tops in way of transverse
bulkheads is now performed if relevant (ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch5 S6 2.5.1)

7/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

• The tiers distribution for coefficient ϕ1 for (sea) pressures on exposed decks has been
modified as follow (ref: BV RULES – PtB Ch5 S5 1.2.1 & T2)
• Tier height has been taken to 2.3 m
• Coefficient ϕ1 is now valid for the full height of the tier
• Double skin transverse bulkheads are now assessed under flooding as soon as only one of
the compartment aftward or forward is not loaded or contains bulk loading: before
compartments on both sides had to be empty

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)

• The NR527 related data as well as the ice loads resulting have been added in the BSD data
prints
• The following elements have been modified according to IACS UR-I on Polar Class (overruling
the current NR527 contents):
• Reference UR-I-2 2.3.1 (iii): Polar Classes 6 & 7 take ice loads from bow area in their
bow intermediate region (NR527 S2 4.1.3) but only for the icebelt. The icebelt
restriction has been added in MARS
• Reference UR-I-2 T3: Hull Area factors for Polar Classes 6 & 7 are equal to 1 in the
bow intermediate icebelt region (NR527 S2 T11). This has been corrected in MARS
and also for Icebreakers 6 & 7 as the CAF cannot be smaller for Icebreaker than for the
Polar Class
• Reference UR-I-2 2.6.3: coefficient bp (in NR257 S2 7.5.3), needed for the calculation
of kz coefficient for transverse stiffeners, correct value taken directly from UR-I beff, is
now bp = 0.5s
• Shape coefficient for the bow area was wrongly computed at the section’s X instead of "x" (ref:
NR527 – S2 4.3.2) whose meaning is mid-length position x of each bow sub region. This has
been corrected but using a bow region’s length computed from Lui (= UIWL length) - XBA input
which is an approximate as the UIWL doesn’t start at AE
• There were some problems in the attributing a vertical region (bottom, lower, icebelt, above
icebelt) for EPPs and strakes. They have been corrected
• A2 coefficient for the longitudinal stiffeners criteria (ref: NR527 – S2 7.6.3) and A1A & kz
coefficients for the transverse stiffeners criteria (ref: NR527 – S2 7.5.3) were wrongly
computed in MARS. This has been corrected
• Calculation of the actual net shear area for bulb stiffeners and calculation of actual net
effective plastic section modulus for angle and bulb stiffeners were not evaluated correctly for
the NR527 assessment done in MARS. This has been corrected
• The Structural stability criteria for welded profiles (ref: NR527 – S2 7.4.4) were applying
wrongly on bulb profiles. This has been disconnected
• Hull Area Factor for Icebreaker 3 stern icebelt was wrongly taken equal to 0.85 instead of 0.8
(ref: NR527 – S2 T12). This has been corrected
• The NR527 buckling was disconnected since version 2.8d for EPPs -regression-. It has been
reconnected

CSR for Bulk Carriers

• The tiers distribution for coefficient ϕ for (external) pressures on exposed decks has been
modified as follow (ref: CSR BC - Ch4 S5 2.2.1 & T5):
• Tier height has been taken to 2.3 m
• Coefficient ϕ is now valid for the full height of the tier

CSR for Oil Tankers

• The slamming rule thickness value was not included in the gross thickness synthesis for
strakes assessment. This has been added.

8/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

Harmonized CSR
• Strakes and transverse stiffeners made of stainless steel did not get the 0.5 minimum
corrosion subtracted from their net thicknesses: this has been corrected.
• The tiers distribution for coefficient χ for (external) pressures on exposed decks has been
modified as follow (ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch4 S5 2.2.3 & T31):
• Tier height has been taken to 2.3 m
• Coefficient χ is now valid for the full height of the tier

Version 2.8d (December 11, 2014)

BV Rules for Steel Ships
• The minimum net thickness of plating of weather strength deck or trunk deck in a cross-
section forward of the 0.4L amidships and aftward of the fore part was wrongly set to 0 (this
also affected LNG ships): it has been corrected
• For container ships: a crash was happening, since the changes done in version 2.8, on
sections defined without a top of continuous member. This has been corrected
• Since version 2.8a, the sea wave pressures associated to "a" & "b" cases for deck elements
between of cross-sections between 0.5L and 0.75L was wrongly taken equal to zero. This has
been corrected

BV Rules for Offshore Units

• Since version 2.8a, the sea wave pressures associated to "a" & "b" cases for deck elements
between of cross-sections between 0.5L and 0.75L was wrongly taken equal to zero. This has
been corrected

BV – Classification of Polar Class & Icebreakers (NR 527)

• According to Edition April 2013, the corrosion margin for "other areas" has been removed and
the actual net plastic section modulus calculation has been corrected according to the rules
• The check of the polar class total corrosion margin has been added in the Section
assessments (Rule) module, through the menu “Check” “Total corrosion margin – Polar”
• The actual net effective shear area was computed from gross scantlings, this has been
corrected
• The polar class corrosion was erroneous for EPP & Strakes above the bottom, this has been
corrected

CSR for Oil Tankers

• The sloshing assessment on longitudinal stiffeners with one or both ends not fixed (i.e. in
MARS200 longitudinal stiffeners with a null bending efficiency) was done with a fbdg coefficient
taken equal to 12 instead of 8 (ref: CSR OT - S8 6.2.4.1). This has been corrected
• In the Basic Ship Data, the input of the GM and Roll Radius from loading manual can be
considered for fatigue assessment (ref: CSR OT - S7 3.1.3.4). This has been connected

9/10
Bureau Veritas – MARS2000 Main Modifications – M005

Harmonized CSR
• The algorithm used to evaluate the buckling capacity of stiffeners for cases where (cf - pz)
gets close to 0 (asymptote) has been clarified: for those cases the actual value of the “eta
Bu[ckling] Stif[fener]” criteria is taken equal to the actual value of the “Eta Bu[ckling] Over[all]”
(ref: CSR H - Pt1 Ch8 S5 2.3.4)
• The admissible shear forces were wrongly computed from gross scantling results, they are
now dependent of the net scantlings (half corrosion)
• In the Section Edit module, in the Fatigue “details” display, the types 24 & 31/32 were not
accessible with the ">" button, this has been corrected
• For the Apply Damage Zone tool available in the Section Edit module: a correction has been
made to apply a damage zone on starboard side with correct “y inboard” definition

MARS 2000 General Changes

In the Section Edit module:
• A new tool has been added that allows to copy the current stiffener group onto a new stiffener
group on the same or another panel

In the Section assessments (Rule) module:

• For cross-sections outside 0.4L amidships the actual section modulus at bottom is no more
computed with z = 0 but is now done with z = zmin, the minimum z coordinate found on the
section
• Any mono-span transverse stiffener starting or ending on a node at the Centre Line (y = 0)
without bracket at that extremity, and the node being without longitudinal stiffener and without
knuckle or intersection of panel defined, which means that the transverse spans in fact over
the Centre Line, had not its span doubled to consider the “other side”. This has been corrected
(this was already correct for the equivalent EPPs)
• The application of pressures or deck loads for multi-span transverse stiffeners was sometimes
no applied on the correct spans when such pressures don’t apply on all the spans

In the Bulkhead Arrangement Edit module:

• Local “Add”/”Delete” buttons have been added for the bands in the strakes input
