TITLE: “He told me he was angry!”

AIMS:  to use correctly the verbs in indirect speech


 to report statements, questions and commands
 to develop students’ ability to recognize different tenses

OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

 recognize patterns of indirect speech

 use correctly the verbs in indirect speech


 make the necessary transformations from direct to indirect speech

- Students must have a satisfactory level of English;


- Students must be eager to participate.

- If students do not understand the oral commands or the tasks, they will
be translated into Romanian.

STAGES:
I. WARM-UP

Aim:  to create a pleasant atmosphere and to relax.


Interaction: teacher – students
Procedure: The teacher greets the pupils. The pupil on duty tells the
absents; the teacher writes the absents in the roll; then the teacher checks
their homework.
Timing: 2 minutes
1. Good afternoon, children !
2. How are you today ?
3. Who is on duty today?
4. Who is absent?

II: LEAD IN:


Activity 1: Frontal and individual activity

Aims:  to prepare for the main activity


 to have a guided dialogue
Interaction: teacher-students; students-teacher
Procedure: The teacher asks a student what he did during the break
and then she transforms the sentence into indirect speech, without
specifying exactly what she did.
Example: Q: What did you do during the break?
A: I ate my sandwich.
The teacher reports to the students: Your classmate had eaten her
sandwich last break. Let’s see another student, etc.
Timing: 6 minutes

III: ANNOUNCING OBJECTIVES:

Aim:  to announce the objectives of the new lesson


Interaction: teacher  students, students teacher
Procedure: The teacher says that today they are going to learn how
to report other people’s sentences. Also, she announces the main steps to be
followed in the lesson: presentation, practice, production.
Timing: 3 minutes

IV. PRESENTATION
Activity 2: Individual activity

Aim:  to develop students’ ability to recognize different tenses

Interaction: teacher  students


Procedure:. 1. The teacher makes a table on the blackboard
writing: “Direct / Indirect speech”. She explains the difference between them
and gives examples which she writes on the blackboard.
2. Brainstorming the tenses they already know (writing them in short
sentences in the Direct column) .
3. Making the transformations (by the teacher), writing in the Indirect
column in the same sentences.
4. The teacher also explains the other transformations that need to be made
besides tense: time, persons, using additional words like “ask, say, explain”,
and the usage of “that”.
Note: Students pay attention and write only after the teacher has finished
explaining.
Timing: 10 minutes
V . PRACTICE
Activity 3: Pair work

Aims:  to use the reported speech


 to have each student involved in the activity
Interaction: teacher  students, students  students
Procedure: The teacher gives the students the following task:
Write some statements. Take turns to contradict me.
E.g. T: I’m married.
A: But you told me you were not married, you were single.
T: Oh, dear! It’s raining.
B: What?! They said it would be sunny.
T: My brother’s a barman.
C: No way! You said he was a fireman last week.
T: The meeting is on the 20th
D: But you said five minutes ago that the meeting was on the 19th.

Write five similar sentences. In pairs, take turns to read out your sentences
and contradict each other.

Timing: 10 minutes

VI. CONTROLLED PRACTICE


Activity 4 : Individual work

Aim:  to raise students’ awareness of the transformations


involved in indirect speech
Interection: students students
Procedure:. The teacher instructs students regarding the exercises
that they have to solve. These exercises are the following:
1. Make the necessary transformations for the following sentences:
a. Mark says that he is watching TV now.
b. “Are you studying?” asked Mary.
c. John told me”will you be there tomorrow?”
d. She was at the countryside last summer.
e. “You must shut down the TV!” shouted my mother.
2. Fill in the gaps with the correct tense transformation.
3. Transform the verbs into indirect speech tense.
Timing: 10 minutes

Vll: PRODUCTION
Activity 5 : Frontal and individual work

Aims:  to have every student involued in the activity


 to develop students’ imagination by creating their own
sentences
Interaction: teacher  students; students  teacher
Procedure: 1. The students are asked to write five sentences, they
choose the topic. They are required to use different tenses. (Individual work)
2. Students practice by reporting to the other classmate what the sentence
was about. (Student a reads the sentence; student b – reports; student c –
listens); they take turns.
Timing: 5 minutes
VIII: ENDING THE LESSON

Interaction: teacher  students

Procedure: The teacher revises the important aspects of the new lesson
together with the students

Timing: 2 minutes

FEED-BACK:
Procedure: The teacher makes remarks regarding the pupils’
activity during the lesson, gives “+”s for the active students.
Timing: 1 minute

Procedure: The teacher assigns the homework and explains it.
