Meeting 1

Lesson Objective: To talk about inventions.

Opening activities (5 minutes):


1. Teacher greets students and writes what he says on the board.
2. Teacher takes students’ attendance and greets some students.

Core activities (25 minutes):


1. Teacher tells students that they are going to learn about life then
and now.
2. Teacher asks students to make a list of things about technology
they always find everyday such as computer, handphone, tablet,
refrigerator and so on.
3. Teacher asks students to guess what people hundreds years ago
lived without all the inventions.
4. Teacher asks students to discuss why all the inventions are
important to people nowadays.
5. Teacher prepares copies of texts on page 52. Students are divided
into groups and each group is given the copies to discuss. Teacher
asks each group to make a poster based on the texts: they draw
the inventions described in the texts.
6. Teacher asks students to do activity 2 page 52. Students read aloud
the texts then number them according to the correct picture.

Closing activities (5 minutes.):


7. Teacher asks students to look for other inventions from the internet
and write a short description about it.
8. Teacher wraps up the lesson and closes the class.
Meeting 2

Lesson Objective: To talk about how people lived then.

Opening activities (5 minutes):


1. Teacher greets students.
2. Teacher reviews the previous lesson by showing some inventions
such as computer, car, handphone etc, while asking the questions
“What’s this?” “Did people in 1200 use handphone to
communicate?” “How did people then wash their clothes?” and so
on.

Core activities (25 minutes):


3. Teacher divides students into two groups. Each student from the
groups stands in front of the board and holds a marker. Teacher
tells thme that he/she is going to read a description of an invention
and they have to guess by drawing it on the board. The one who
finishes drawing firstly and correctly gets points.
4. Teacher asks students to open the book to page 53 and do activity
3. Teacher asks students to look at the picture closely and to say
what they see on the picture.
5. Teacher reads the dialogue in activity 4 several times and asks
students to repeat.
6. Teacher asks students work in pairs to talk about how people lived
then based on the picture in activity 3 using the sample dialogue in
activity 4.
7. Teacher asks each pair to do the dialogue.
8. Teacher asks each pair to look at the picture in activity 5 and to talk
what’s wrong with it. Then students circle ten things that don’t
belong.

Closing activity (5 minutes):


9. Teacher asks students some questions about how people lived then
such as “Did people use electricity light then?”, “Was there any
washing mashine then?” and so on.
10. Teacher wraps up the lesson and closes the class.
Meeting 3
Lesson Objective: To talk about old times using simple past.

Opening activities (5 minutes):


1. Teacher greets students.
2. Teacher shows students a picture from activity 5 asks students to
say what’s wrong with it and what things don’t belong.

Core activities (25 minutes):


3. Teacher writes simple past on the board while talking about the
picture such as “People dind’t use refrigerator to store food.”,
“There weren’t any electric lights then.” “There wasn’t any cars
then” “People didn’t drive any cars then.” And so on.
4. Teacher asks students to write the sentences in activity 6 about the
picture using didin’t, there wasn’t and there weren’t similar to the
examples.
5. Teacher reads a text in activity 7 page 55 and asks students to
repeat. Students then complete the blanks with correct form of
verbs from Word Bank
6. Teacher plays the recording for activity 8 page 56 and asks students
to listen to the conversation. Students then circle things that
Mandy’s grandmother didn’t have then based on what they hear.
7. Teacher asks students to red aloud the text in activity 7 and to
answer the questions in activity 9 page 56.

Closing activity (5 minutes)


8. Teacher asks students talk about other inventions that they looked
for from the internet in the previous meeting.
9. Teacher wraps up the lessons and closes the class.
Meeting 4
Lesson Objective: To understand very simple descriptive reading texts
with pictures.

Opening activities (5 minutes):


1. Teacher greets students.
2. Teacher shows students pictures of inventions and asks them
questions such as “Did people then use washing mashine to wash
their clothes?” “Was there any sewing machines then?” “How did
people then sew their clothes?”
3. Teacher leads students to reading a story “My Trip To Cartagena”.

Core activities (25 minutes):


4. Teacher tells the story on page 57 and asks students to repeat it
after him.
5. Teacher asks some questions about the story to check
comprehension.
“Look at the picture. Who is this?”
“How did they do to Cartagena?”
“Where is Cartagena?”
“Who lived in Cartagena then?”
“Who is Sir Francis Drake?”
6. Teacher asks students to cut the story and make it into the little
book (Optional).

Closing activities (5 minutes)


7. Teacher asks students to do the project (Optional).
8. Teacher wraps up the lesson and closes the class.
Meeting 5
Lesson Objective: To review the lessons

Opening activities (5 minutes):


1. Teacher greets students.
2. Teacher shows pictures of inventions and asks students to mention
them.

Core activities (25 minutes):


3. Teacher asks students to do the project of interviewing an old
person and to listen and read the poem on page 59.
4. Teacher explains how to do the activity on page 60 and asks
students to do it in pairs/ groups.

Closing activities (5 minutes)

5. Teacher asks students to write questions and answers about how


people lived then based on the pictures and to complete the
sentences with correct form of verbs from Word Bank on page 61.
6. Teacher asks students to write a journal about inventions that make
their life better.
7. Teacher wraps up the lesson and closes the class.
