1 PROBLEM
An industrial area located in Bukit Tengah, Seberang Perai Tengah, Pulau Pinang, has been adopted for the
warehouse development with lot area of 1 ha (100m x 100m), floor area 60m x 60m and parking area 60m x
20m. The stormwater runoff from the impervious areas will be directed to the vegetated filter strip around the
perimeter of the building and parking areas. The distributed stormwater runoff from vegetated filter strip will
facility of impermeable type. For such runoff quality treatment an appropriate sizing of the facility is required.

Catchment area, A 1 ha
The time of flow in the channel (td) is derived based on the velocity (V)
and length (L) of flow in the swale.
Given that:
Velocity, V 0.25 m/s
Length, L 175 m
Then, td = L/V = 175 0.25 11.67 min
Assume the overland flow time (to) is 5 minutes
Then, the time of concentration, tc = to + td = 11.667 + 5 16.67 min

Given that,
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity, k 7.22E-06 m/s
Base Width of the Ponded Cross Section above the Filter Bed, Wb 15 m
Base Length of the Bioretention Zone, Lb 41 m (9.2.2.7)
Average height of water above the filter bed, hf 0.3 m PG 9-7
Therefore, the maximum infiltration rate reaching the perforated pipe at (9.2.2.5)
the base of the soil media is given as: PG 9-6

Given that,
Diameter of Perforated Pipe 100 mm2
Diameter of Perforations 5 mm2
Spacing of Perforations 25 mm c/c
Circumference of Perforated Pipe 314.2 mm
Number of Rows (of Perforations) = 314.2 25 = 12.568 12.57
Number of Column (of Perforation/m) = 1000 25 = 40 40.00
Number of Perforations = 12.568 x 40 = 502.72 502.7
Number of Perforations (assume 50% blockage) 251.4

Area of each Perforation 19.63 mm
And so,

Total Area of the Orifices, A = 19.625 x 251.36 / 1E+06 0.0049 m
Maximum Head of Water above the Pipe (m) (filtration media depth
plus ponding depth), h 1.4 m
Orifice Coefficient, C 0.6 PG 2-12
Blockage Factor (Ψ = 2 is recommended), Ψ 2

Gravity Constant, g 9.81 m /s
Note that, the maximum head of water above the pipe (h) is given as: 300
mm (ponding depth) + 100 mm (mulch layer) + 750 mm (planting bed) +
100 mm (transition layer) + 100 mm (part of drainage layer above the
pipe) + 50 mm (radius of perforated pipe) = 1400 mm
