1.0 IDENTIFICATION NUMBERING
With the exception of transformer neutrals, all CT's are supplied in sets of three, one is
installed on each of the three phases.
Each set of CT’s is assigned a unique identification number and these numbers are indicated
on the single line diagram drawing no. 1114-24-002, as well as on the equipment itself.
The identification number comprises three parts, the first being a letter which designates the
voltage level of the primary equipment (i.e. A = 300kV, B = 132kV, C = 33kV, D = 11kV,
H = 415V).
The third part is the position of the set of CT’s on the primary equipment relative to the
other sets of CT’s. It is prefixed by the letters "C" to indicate a CT and is then followed by
a number.
The CT number will increment as the CT position gets closer to the bus bar.
Example:
A2C1
Bay No. 2
Each set of VT’s is assigned a unique identification number and these numbers are indicated
on the single line diagram for the substation as well as on the equipment.
The identification number comprises three parts, the first being a letter which designates the
voltage level of the primary equipment (i.e. A = 300kV, B = 132kV, C = 33kV, D = 11kV,
H = 415V.)
The second part is the bay number of the primary equipment associated with the VT.
The third part is the position of the set of VT’s on the primary equipment relative to other
VT’s. It is prefixed by the letter ‘V’ to indicate VT and then followed by a number. As
there is only one VT per circuit this number will be ‘1’ for the 132kV, 33kV, 11kV and
415V circuits.

6.0 DERIVATION OF CT CHARACTERISTICS –300 KV OHL FEEDER
This comprises ABB type LZ96(a) Version 34 distance protection relay with module RE93 for
directional earth fault protection. For this relay the following criteria for the CT should be met :
Accuracy
The current transformer should at least comply with requirements of the class 5P. For rated
current and burden the ratio error should not exceed ± 1% and phase angle error ± 1°. The ratio
error for fully burdened CT and currents up to limit error current (over current factor x rated
current) should not exceed 5%.
Saturation
When considering the application of current transformers for protection purposes it should be
checked that no saturation is attained in the case when the DC component is taken into account,
viz:
1. Saturation should not be reached during first 30ms (max. relay tripping time) at maximum fault
current and fault at the reach point of the first zone.
2. It should be checked that saturation is not over 3 times during first 30ms at maximum fault
current in the tripping direction.
3. It should be checked that saturation is not over 5 times at maximum fault current flowing in the
blocking direction.
Expressions for calculating the CT saturation can be found in the brochure CH-ES 45-10.1E,
"The requirements made of current transformers by high speed protective relays".
Proposed CT Data
Ratio 2000/1
Class 5P30
Rated Burden 45 VA
Resistance 6 ohm
Checking the CT meets the requirements of the relay specified in the three saturation conditions
listed above :
Condition 1
Saturation should not be reached during ta = 30ms (max. relay tripping time) at maximum
fault current for a fault at the reach point of the first zone.
Page 11 of 43
na’ = n / (T1.ω.(1-e(-ta/T1))+1
n / na’ = (T1.ω.(1-e(-ta/T1))+1
Where,
T1 = time constant for the system = 100 ms
XL = L.(a/100).X’
Where,
XL = Line impedance in ohm
L = Line length in km,
= 5 km (assumed minimum line length)
a = Setting of relay as % of line length
= 120 % for permissive over-reaching scheme
X’ = Line impedance per km
= 0.26 ohm/km
Hence,
XL = 5 x 1.2 x 0.26
= 1.56 ohm
Static relays have lower power consumption than the rated CT burden which has the effect
of increasing the over current factor (n) vide sheet 3 of CH-ES45-10.1E.
Page 12 of 43
n = (PN + PE) . nw …...(3)
(PB + PE)
where,
nw = Over current factor at rated burden
= 30
PB = Burden of relay + cable burden (0.1 + 0.25 + 2 x 0.7)
= 1.75VA
PE = Internal VA of CT (6 ohm)
= 6 VA
PN = rated burden of CT
According to (1),
n = 9.1 x na’
Hence,
9.1 x 20.1 = [(PN + 6)/(1.75 + 6)] x 30
PN = 41.25 VA
Condition 2
During the first 30msec of maximum fault current in the tripping direction the prospective
value of secondary current should not be more than 3 times the current at which saturation
would occur.
na’ = 31.5 / 3
= 10.5
According to (1),
n = 9.1 x na’
Page 13 of 43
Hence,
9.1 x 10.5 = [(PN + 6)/(1.75 + 6)] x 30
PN = 18.68 VA
Condition 3
For a maximum fault current in the reverse direction the prospective value of secondary
current should not be more than 5 times the current at which saturation would occur.
n’min = n / (T1.ω+1)
n / n’min = T1.ω+1
= 0.1 x 2 x π x 50 + 1
= 32.4 ……(4)
n’min = 21.39 / 5
= 4.28
According to (4),
n = 32.4 x n’min
Hence,
32.4 x 4.28 = [(PN + 6)/(1.75 + 6)] x 30
PN = 29.8 VA

Relay used for this application is Areva type MiCOM P633, transformer differential protection
relay. As per the relay Technical Manual, section 2.12, Dimensioning of Current Transformers
(Attachment 4), the dimensioning of current transformer for the minimum required saturation
voltage Vsat is given as follows:
The current transformer can then be dimensioned for the minimum required saturation voltage
Vsat as follows:
Page 21 of 43
Vsat ≥ (Rop + Ri) x k x I’1,max
Alternatively, the current transformer can also be dimensioned for the minimum required rated
over current factor, n as:
However, this is not necessary. Instead, it is sufficient to dimension the over dimensioning factor
k, such that the normal behaviour of the analyzed protective function is guarantied under the
given conditions.
According to MiCOM P633 technical manual over dimensioning factor is obviated for external
faults.
For internal faults, static saturation up to maximum saturation factor fs of 4 is permissible. This
corresponds to an over dimensioning factor k of 0.25.
The current transformer should comply with the fault tolerance values of class 5P.

Where:-
K = Stability factor
= 16 x 300000 / (√ 3 x 275)
= 10078 A (primary)
The stability factor K is influenced by the ratio VK/VS which governs the stability of the REF
protection element for through faults.
To obtain high speed operation for internal faults, the knee point voltage VK of the CT must be
significantly higher than the stability voltage VS. A ratio of 4 is used for calculation.
VK ≥ 4 . K . If . (RCT + 2RL)

The appropriate value of series resistance (Rsr) required to ensure stability is calculated using :

Calculating,
Since the peak voltage developed is less than 3000 V a metrosil is not proposed.
CT Excitation Current
Ie = (Is - Ir - Im) / n
Where:-
Is = Relay effective setting current or min. fault required to operate the relay.
Ir = Relay setting current
Im = Metrosil current at setting voltage
n = Number of connected CTs
Ie = CT excitation current at voltage setting
Page 26 of 43
Using the relay setting at 10%, Ir = 0.1 A

As per EA technical specification 48-3 Item 5.2 (b) fault setting is between 10% and 25% of the
rated current of transformer winding.
