First Voyage around the World by Magellan by Antonio Pigafetta

I. Brief Summary

The story begins when Magellan and his fleet arrive at the

Philippines, specifically in the isle of Zamal (Samar). As they continue

their journey, their description about the native changes from "the

land of thieves" to "very familiar and friendly". Later on they met some

local leaders namely Raia Calambu, king of Zuluan and Calagan

(Butuan and Caragua), and king Raia Siagu which was later on played

a vital role on the Mass Arranged by Magellan. It was on the 31st of

March, which happened to be Easter Sunday, and it was the very First

Mass held in the Philippines.

After the Mass, here comes the introduction of the cross. The

European said that it symbolizes their Emperor and if there happens to

be other European seen that, they won't bother them. As Magellan

continue preaching the peace of God, the native was amazed and

decided to convert as Christian by baptism, and later the Kings as well

was baptized. One of the local leaders refuses to follow Magellan. He

was Lapulapu, the leader of Mactan. Magellan gathered Men, and the

bloody battle in Mactan happens, which lead to Magellan's death, hit

by a poison arrow on his right leg. Pigafetta offers gifts of any value to

retrieve the body of Magellan, but the chief refused for that will serve

as their memento of their victory. After that the European elects a new

captain and continues their journey around the world.

II. Internal Criticism

The First Voyage around the World by Magellan was written and

published by Antonio Pigafetta after he returns in Italy on the year

1536. Pigafetta is a great author because as a writer who is present

when that event happens he writes it with full honesty and

truthfulness. He clearly stated what happens back then base on what

he really observed, he did not change it nor edit it. I noticed this

because all his words in the story connect with each other. This story

was a plausible one because it was based on Pigafetta own narration

on what is happening around him. Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian

seafarer and a geographer, so in terms of familiarity, the story was

connected to his profession, as a geographer, as someone who studies

the earth, he must remain honest and truthful on sharing what he

discovered, so writing this book was in his area of expertise.

III. External Criticism

The First Voyage around the World by Magellan was originally

made by Antonio Pigafetta. Pigafetta was a European citizen so the

only perspective shown in the story was how the European perceives,

acts, and feels about the events that had happened. It did not include

the thoughts and opinions of the Filipinos, were the Filipinos was really

amazed or they just acts one because of fear. Although I couldn't say

that he was being bias, because he also includes some of Filipinos

tradition back then like the Kings heredity of power. He is well suited

in writing the story because in terms of observation of facts, He was a

geographer, so he has general knowledge for learning and reporting

the event. It is well suited with his skills. This book was not a work of

fiction because the author himself is present when he wrote it. In

addition, another proof that this is reliable was the date it was

published, the circumnavigation of Magellan happens on 1519-1522,

and the book was published on 1536, so it was 14 years after the

circumnavigation, just enough time to write the story without changing

some events. Lastly the First Voyage around the World by Magellan
was a primary source because it was written originally from the view

of Pigafetta himself, so it is an original source wholly.

IV.Application of learning to you as a student

First of all, I learned how to write External and Internal Criticism.

Also because of Pigafetta's work, I gained new knowledge about

Philippine History, also some of it updated my past knowledge like for

example, since elementary I grew up knowing that the 1st arrival of

Magellan in the Philippines was on Cebu, but now I know that it's in

Samar not Cebu. So basically I learned the true value and importance

of having primary source as basis on studying the past.
