English workshop 2019

This year English workshop was organized by Sunshine Society from 22nd
May which came to an end on 28th June to resume back next year again
with the same zeal and enthusiasm. The 5-week long enrichment work-
shop was highly beneficial for the children because of the sincere and dedi-
cated efforts put in by the teachers to bridge the language gaps of our chil-
dren. Approximately 90 children benefitted from this workshop this year.
The workshop which was activity based, focused on speaking & writing
skills of the children with an emphasis on parts of speech, vocabulary,
comprehension, creative writing, spellings, punctuations, etc. Children
were also motivated to speak more in English by organizing extempore,
debate, story- telling and recitation. The idea was to boost the confidence
and help the children in getting over their fear of speaking.
The entire workshop was planned in a structured way, module wise by our
teachers Iram Shamim Malik and Priyanka Saxena.

The workshop was supported by five student volunteers: Shalina Prakash,

class 11th, Shiv Nadar School; Jahnavi, class 11th, Somerville School; Me-
ghna Chopra & Diya Mundra, class 10th, Kothari International
School; Rhesa Rose Mookken, class 9th, Somerville School. The dedication
and sincerity with which these volunteers worked with the children is
worth mentioning and commendable.

The finale which was scheduled on 28th June was as exciting as the other
days of the workshop. Shri. V.P. Gupta Sir was kind enough to grace the
occasion with his presence. Children were finally awarded based on their
performance on various parameters like full attendance, active participa-
tion, best performance in extempore, creative writing, regular tests, draw-
ing, sketching, craft and showing maximum improvement.

The end saw the distribution of goodies by some kind heart residents.
Fruits by Reena Goswami from Alok Vihar 2, peanut and sesame chikkis
by Sonali Kumar and notebooks & stationery by Sapna Dubey from Alok
Vihar 1. Thus, with the beautiful moments of fun & laughter amidst learn-
ing and exploring, we decided to meet again next year with the same com-
mitment and enthusiasm to continue to learn, un-learn & re-learn.

Vinod Prakash Gupta Merit cum Means Scholarship

The Vinod Prakash Gupta Merit cum Means Scholar-

ship (VPGMS) cheques were handed over to Ashish, a
student of class 5, New Golden Public School,
Hoshiyarpur, Noida by none other but Shri Vinod Pra-
kash Gupta. The scholarship has been sponsored by a
kind heart Mr. Tarundeep Kharbanda.

Case of Ashish: Due to his father’s untimely death and

the burden to take care of younger siblings and a
mother, Ashish decided to leave his schooling and soon
joined as a daily wager in a nearby shop in order to
support his family financially.

A bright child with a record of double promotion, quitting

his studies? This did not go well with Sunshine Socie-
ty’s philosophy to provide basic education to all chil-
dren, make them skilled by imparting vocational train-
ings and provide higher education to them. Soon it
was decided to enroll him back to school so that he
continues with his education and provide him basic
financial support...the USP of this scholarship.

Meet a Noble soul—Tarundeep Kharbanda

Sometimes ...and this miracle happened with Ashish. Due to

family circumstances, Ashish left his education (as
discussed above) in order to provide his family with

miracles are basic necessities. To support Ashish during these

tough times so that he continues with his educa-
tion, Sunshine Society found a savior in Tarundeep

just good
Kharbanda who came forward to sponsor the merit
cum means scholarship amount for Ashish.

Ashish now attends his classes regularly.

people with Sunshine Society is grateful to Tarundeep for ex-

tending help so generously and looks forward to
keep working together always.

Spreading Sunshine—Gurmeet Kaur

Gurmeet Kaur aka Rosy ma’am is who the children need for academic excel-
lence. M.Sc. Maths from Banaras Hindu University, she has been teaching the
children for the last 24 years. She shifted to Antriksha Greens in 2011 and

Senior Citizen-Rights and Privileges in India

(with focus on financial aspects)
Shraddha Tripathi, PGDF– Indian School of Business & Finance, New Delhi

Nurturing of old age society ought to be the supreme duty of the nation. While
most of the developed countries have full measures over the increasing aeging
population of the country and have complex policies and schemes for the elderly
population, most of the developing countries like ours have acted ignorantly. Alt-
hough there are some basic legislations such as Indira Gandhi National Old Age
Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY), National Pro-
gramme for the Health Care Of Elderly (NPHCE) of the Indian constitution are
safeguarding the rights and privileges of Elderly.

According to the world population (2019) report, India is the second most popu-
lated country in the world with 1.36 billion comprising 8% of the population of
the senior citizens, people who are over the age of 60 years. This share of the population of 8% is pro-
jected to increase up to nearly 20% by 2050. The United Nation’s reports are depicting that it has
turned into a priority for the nation to manage and satisfy their needs and mode of living. With that in
the mind, the constitution of India introduced rights and policies to encourage states to aid the elderly
who are not able to support themselves. Here are few safeguards that senior citizen can avail to take
the benefits for their convenience and ease their financial burden.

Government has lowered their tax burden to reduce the financial burden. Super senior citizen of over
the age of 80 years having income up to 5 lakhs are exempted from the tax. Government has planned
various health insurance scheme for them. Varishtha Mediclaim Policy is made specifically for the age
of 60-80 years to meet the requirements of senior citizens. The policy includes the cost of medicines,
drugs, blood, oxygen, diagnosis charges, etc. The plan provides one lakh sum for hospitalization and
up to 2 lakhs for critical illness coverage. Tax benefits under section 80D are available on the premi-
ums paid. There are several other health insurance schemes such as Central Government Employees
and Pensioners health insurance – especially for the employees of the central government. Some pri-
vate companies also provide health insurance plans to provide support to elderly: the plans such as
Health of privileged elder plan, Star health senior citizen red carpet, etc. The health insurance plans
make senior citizen independent, free and regular health check-ups keep them away from the worries
of medical problems. Few benefits for senior citizens to ease the financial burden are as follows:

 The Government has provided relaxation on travel expenses. Senior citizens can avail various
discounts on fares.
 50% discount on economy fare during domestic air travel
 Certain discounts by state & municipal corporation on bus fare
 Men over the age of 60 and women over the age of 58 are eligible for 40% and 50% discount on
train fare respectively. The discount is available on fares of all classes of Mail/Express/
Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi/ Duranto trains.
 Certain seats are also reserved in buses & trains and also metro train for elderly.
 Elderly are benefitted from higher interest rates on the investments. The senior citizen’s saving
schemes are available to all seniors who are above the age of 60. It offers interest of 8.4% per
annum.
 The telephone bills of senior citizens are subsidized. People over the age of 65 are eligible for
25% of concession on installation charges and monthly service charges for landline connections.
 Separate queues for the elderly in the hospitals, for ticket reservations, and in the bank branch-
es are arranged.

The main objective of various policies and schemes is to improve the quality of life of older persons by
providing basic amenities like food, lodging, medical care and recreational opportunities, etc. Various
agencies are eligible for assistance under the schemes and the funds which are generated under such
schemes are not released to states but are released to implementing agencies like NGOs, etc.
Thus, with all these schemes and benefits, some betterment can be perceived in the state of our elder-
ly. The only important factor is the awareness of the rights & privileges to them.

Education of Parents of underprivileged children

Manya Bhatia—Pursuing BA (Hons) Economics
Shri Venkateswara College, Delhi University
A child is like a sponge who absorbs things quickly, especially from people
around him/her. This makes the education of parents of all children, especially
underprivileged ones extremely vital. We grow up to learn and adapt to things
that our parents say and do and if they are not educated not just in terms of
subjects but in terms of values then the vicious cycle of weak values continues.
Certain communities of our society have really patriarchal and backward
thought processes which shouldn’t be taught to these volatile and open young
minds. The more aware parents are of their own values, the clearer they will be
in expressing them and communicating them to their children.

Parents are the ones who support and sponsor the education of children making
it necessary for them to understand the importance of education which can only happen if they are
educated and gain knowledge to broaden their horizons and learn about the world beyond their own
communities. Not just for their children, basic education can help these adults in daily life, even if
their line of work is farming, house help etc. They will be well aware of their rights and responsibilities
of being a good citizen of the country. These adults need to understand the basic fact that this vicious
cycle of poverty will continue till these children are brought up with certain values and education. A
child’s learning scale is highly related to how they are treated at home. If the home environment sup-
ports education not only morally but also in terms of helping these children out by having knowledge,
they will be motivated to reach higher levels.

Educated parents will also come out to be role models for children from underprivileged families since
they are from parts of the world where they don’t have many role models to look up to.

Improvising Learning – Marelli

Inauguration of Biology, Physics and Chemis-

try labs and a library under Integrated
School Improvement Program by Sunshine
Society and Marelli at Rajkiya Balika Inter
College, sector 51, Noida.
To make children environment conscious
with focus on the importance of plants and
trees, 2 Neem saplings, 2 Ashoka and a Gua-
va sapling were planted inside the school
campus.

A small step to improvise learning amongst

the school children by building labs where
they can experiment and experience different
scientific concepts and a functional library to
inculcate the habit of reading and referencing
amongst them.

Our Health and Lifestyle

Agrima Bais, Class 9th, Apeejay School, Noida

―A healthy mind lives in a healthy body‖ this proverb is very true and looks very
impressive in routine conversation but it is very difficult to follow in daily life.
To keep our body healthy, requires a lot of discipline and dedication. It starts
from early morning wake-up and to live every moment with the spirit of stay
healthy. To keep our body healthy we require daily morning walk, physical exer-
cise, yoga & meditation. Alone physical exercise is not sufficient but it also re-
quires good mental health, which comes from positive thoughts, attitude &
thinking. After that we should re-arrange our eating habits which starts from
morning till dinner. Primarily, our breakfast must contain in proper quantity a
good combination of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Not
only our breakfast but our lunch and dinner should have a balanced diet too.
Avoid over eating of anything. We should intake all types of nutrients in their
proper quantity.

Now a days there is major problem of irregular lifestyle in youngsters due to several reasons, like late
night sleeping and waking up in the late hours. The major role player is social media because young-
sters stick with mobiles or laptops in chatting or net surfing. There is no space for sports activities.
Children also do not prefer playground in respect to social media or online games. This kind of life-
style leads to severe way in terms of stress, depression, diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure and
adolescent obesity. On other hand disciplined lifestyle always motivates, leads to better concentration,
keeps one physical & mentally fit. It helps you enjoy quality time with your family & friends. The basic
hygiene should also be practiced in a disciplined manner.

A healthy body not only means a physically and mentally fit individual but a socially active citizen.
Easy method to be healthy is to be happy. To be a healthy individual we should avoid all type of ad-
dictive things – whether it is a mobile game or smoking, liquor consumption or eating junk food. We
should avoid self-medication and taking pain killers because this habit impacts our body badly.

To remain healthy eat healthy, think healthy and be happy.

SAVE EARTH!! PLANT TREES

Jahnavi Puri, Class 11th, Somerville School, Noida

I'm abashed to say

About the weather today
Weather in our country is horrible
Measures must be taken, its terrible
And who do you think has done this
Its not "her" fault, nor "his"
Together we see, the severity
of hopes we have missed
What we all use
Things we can't refuse
Is what is causing this

Temperatures are soaring, minds are imploring

For the weather of old to return
No rain, just dust, just dirty clouds
And skins are out to burn

And many are screaming

As many are dreaming
Dreaming peacefully inside our homes
Sitting happily on our phones

Enjoying the cold breeze

It's truth will make you freeze
Air conditioners are a cause
Use of them must be paused
Just few hours a day is right
To make our country's future BRIGHT
