THE STANDARD FROM FIBER TO FABRIC

1 General Information about USTER® STATISTICS

1.1 What are USTER® STATISTICS?
What benefits do they offer?

USTER® STATISTICS are the benchmark for the worldwide textile industry.
Cotton fibers, as well as yarns made from various other raw materials, are
measured and compared against each other. USTER® STATISTICS offer
reference values for specialists and managers along the textile value chain,
from fiber producers and spinners to weavers, knitters, garment makers, re-
tailers and traders. As well as helping manufacturers to improve production
processes, USTER® STATISTICS are also often used as the basis for yarn
specifications in textile trading contracts.

1.2 What do USTER® STATISTICS levels mean?

USTER® STATISTICS levels, also known as USTER® STATISTICS percen-

tiles, express how many spinning mills worldwide are able to produce a yarn
at the specified level or better. For example, if a spinning mill reaches the 5%
value, it means that only 5% of spinning mills worldwide are able to produce
a yarn at this quality level or better. At the other extreme, if a measured value
corresponds, for example, to the 95% level in the USTER® STATISTICS, it
means that 95% of the spinning mills worldwide are able to produce a yarn
which is better than this value. Thus, in the case of yarns and slivers, it can
be seen that the lower the USTER® STATISTICS level, the better the yarn or
sliver quality. With raw fibers, however, a high or low USTER® STATISTICS
level does not provide a quality assessment, since fiber parameters are in-
herent to the material at this stage.

1.3 How are the USTER® STATISTICS generated?

Samples for the USTER® STATISTICS are collected from textile regions all
over the world over a time period of 5 to 6 years. They are tested constantly
in the laboratories of Uster Technologies, Switzerland, as well as in Suzhou,
China (Chinese samples only), at standard conditions and under strict testing
guidelines. Data analysis and the generation of the graphs are done in the
headquarters in Switzerland by experienced textile technologists. It is of ut-
most importance to check the data for its consistency with former releases of
the USTER® STATISTICS as well as for the significance of the data. All val-
ues for the USTER® STATISTICS are obtained by using the laboratory in-
struments of Uster Technologies. Thus, the USTER®
STATISTICS values are only valid for parameters tested with laboratory in-
struments made by Uster Technologies.

1.4 In which formats are USTER® STATISTICS available?

The reference values of USTER® STATISTICS are displayed in different

formats:
 incorporated into the reports from USTER® instruments
 in an interactive version on the USTER® website (www.uster.com) af-
ter registry for a password which is free of charge
 in an interactive version on a CD-ROM, which can be ordered from
the USTER® website.

1.5 How can USTER® STATISTICS data be used?

The data in the USTER® STATISTICS can be presented either as graphs or

as tables. There are separate graphs for the different process stages, such
as fiber, sliver, and yarn, as well as a separate chapter for the correlation
between fiber and yarn parameters.

1.6 What other information can be found in USTER®

STATISTICS?

On the landing page of the USTER® STATISTICS, various downloads are

offered:

 50 years of USTER® STATISTICS video

 USTER® STATISTICS user guide

2 Use of USTER® STATISTICS

2.1 What kind of graphs are available?

In the section Interactive Charts the following graphs are available:

 Fiber & Yarn

 Sliver
 Fiber-To-Yarn

In order to be able to look at the USTER® STATISTICS graphs, Java needs

to be installed on the computer. Below the link to the interactive charts, you
can find a link to download Java as well as a manual for the Java download,
if it is not already installed on the computer.

STATISTICS TOOL

2.2 How to use the USTER® STATISTICS graphs?

To use the USTER® STATISTICS graphs, one of the three above mentioned
options in the “Java Charts” section needs to be selected.

The use of the USTER® STATISTICS graphs is explained with the help of
the following yarn example (100% cotton, compact yarn, bobbins) in the “Fi-
ber & Yarn” option.

STATISTICS graphs

1) Define the yarn specifications

Yarn type: Select from 17 different raw materials.

Process: Select the spinning technology (ring, compact, OE, airjet), for-
mat (bobbin, cone) and application process of the yarn (weaving, knit-
ting).
Product: Select the USTER® instrument with which the sample was test-
ed.
Specification: Select the required parameter.

2) Determining the USTER® STATISTICS level of a measured yarn

value

Pointing the cursor of the graph will cause crossed lines to appear.

First the count of the measured yarn must be found on the x-axis by point-
ing the cursor over the correct yarn count.
Then the measured value needs to be selected by pointing the cursor
over the value (y-axis).
On the right-hand side of the graph, a text field will appear, with the
selected data (yarn count in different units and the measured value of the
selected parameter). In this example, the yarn count is 14.8 tex
(Ne 39.90) and the evenness CVm = 11.3%.
The resulting USTER® STATISTICS level is displayed in the text field on
the right-hand side of the graph.

3) Printing the graph

To print out the selected graph, the print button at the top right-hand side of
the window must be selected. For landscape printing, the appropriate field
must be ticked.

4) Determining the origin of samples

To find out where the samples for this specification originated, the “Origin of
samples” button must be selected.

2.3 What kind of tables are available?

Tables are available for:

 Fiber AFIS
 Fiber HVI
 Sliver
 Roving
 Yarn

2.4 How to use the USTER® STATISTICS tables?

To use the USTER® STATISTICS tables, one of the above mentioned op-
tions in the “Tables” section needs to be selected.

The USTER® STATISTICS tables can be used in two ways:

1) Determining the USTER® STATISTICS level for given

(measured) values

First the specification of the measured yarn must be selected in the “Yarn
type” field.
Then the yarn count and the count unit must be entered/selected.
Next, the known test results must be typed into the empty fields in the
table.
It is important to select the field “I have measurement values and I am
looking for corresponding USP”.

Determining the USTER STA-
TISTICS level for given
(measured) value

To determine the USTER® STATISTICS level, the “Calculate” button

needs to be selected. The system will calculate the corresponding
USTER® STATISTICS levels and indicate the different levels with different
colors.
This table must be first downloaded as pdf file before it can be printed out.

2) Determining parameter values for a given

USTER® STATISTICS level

Conversely, it is also possible to calculate the absolute values for a given

USTER® STATISTICS level. To obtain this information, the following steps
need to be followed:

First the specification of the particular yarn must be selected in the “Yarn
type” field.
Then the yarn count must be entered and the count unit selected.
The desired USTER® STATISTICS level must be typed into the empty
field at the top of the table titled “I have an USP and I am looking for the
corresponding measurement values”.
This value can be pasted into all fields by clicking on the button “Past
USP into all Fields”. If required, it is also possible to enter different
USTER® STATISTICS levels for each parameter in the table below.

Determining parameter
values for a given USTER®
STATISTICS level

To determine the absolute values for the specific USTER® STATISTICS

levels, the “Calculate” button needs to be selected. The system will calcu-
late the corresponding values and indicate them in the right-hand column
of the table.
This table must be first downloaded as pdf or Excel file before it can be
printed out.
