Edible Cell

Abstract
This activity is designed to reinforce the concepts of
cell structures and functions. The students produce an edible cell
model from various food products. Each product will represent a
specific part/organelle of the cell. This activity was developed for
students to visualized and familiarized with the cell as three-
dimensional structures. In the procedure, the students construct an
animal cell with a dessert concept. The used various sweet
products as an organelle of the cell and used pancake as the base
of the cell. The students have learned the different parts and the
three-dimensional structure of the animal cell. Some organelle of
the animal cell is different than the plant cell. Its structure is also
different than the structure of plant cell.

Objectives encompasses the nucleus and structures

The objective of this activity is
to identify and be familiarize with the
structure of the animal cell. Also, to make
clear representations of the cell and its parts
using the food products that each member
brings. And lastly, to describe the
appearance and functions of the different
organelles within a cell.
Background
You are composed of cells.
Cells are the basic units of both structure and
function in all living things. Just like larger
organisms, cells carry out all the necessary
life processes such as obtaining oxygen,
acquiring food, and removing wastes. Cells
contain organelles that have very specific
functions, similar to the organs in your body.
All cells have a cell
membrane, which structures a boundary to
isolate the cell from its condition. The cell
membrane encompasses a gel-like liquid
called cytoplasm, which is the medium that
holds all of the organelles of the cell. The
large nucleus of a cell is like your cerebrum
since it works as the cell's control focus. The
nucleus contains hereditary material that is
utilized as guidelines for coordinating cell
capacities. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
and move proteins all through the cell.
Attached to the ER are ribosomes, which
produce proteins and can likewise be
discovered drifting somewhere else in the
cytoplasm. The Golgi body gets materials
from the ER and bundles them for transport
to different pieces of the cell. The
"powerhouses" of the cell are the
mitochondria, which convert sustenance
vitality to usable vitality. Water, nourishment,
and other materials are put away in vacuoles.
Lysosomes are the clean-up crew of the cell-
they contain synthetic compounds that
separate old cell parts so they can be utilized
once more.
Methods
In the methodology of this activity, the
group collected the materials needed for this
activity. Here’s the list of the food items to
represent the organelles or structure of the
animal cell.

 Golgi Apparatus – Trolli Worms
 Lysosome – Chips Delight

Firstly, the students placed
the pancake in the paper plate as it served
as the base of the animal cell. While they
were preparing this and all the materials
need for the activity, one member of the
group melted the white chocolate for the
cytoplasm of the cell. Once it was finished.
The group then spread the white chocolate
on the pancake to make it more look as the
cytoplasm of the cell. After it was spread, the
members then scatter Krim Stix chocolate
around the pancake as it was the
representation of the cell membrane of the
animal cell.

Secondly, once the
represented cytoplasm and cell membrane
was on the edible cell, the group then put the
Oreo on the middle top part of the animal cell.
The Oreo is represented as the nucleus and
the nucleolus of the cell. Then after that, they
then placed the Trolli Strips beside the Oreo
as it was the Endoplasmic Reticulum of the
edible animal cell. Following to that they then
added the Trolli Worms. It symbolizes as the
Golgi Apparatus of the animal cell.

Afterwards, the members
then added all of the remaining food
materials that is needed for the edible animal
cell. One piece of Pochi as the Peroxisome,
Small marshmallow as the Vacuole, Ticky
sticks as the Centrosome, Goya Wafer as the
Mitochondria, Nips as the Ribosomes, Mini
Chips Delight as the Lysosome, and lastly
Biscuit stick as the Microtubule.
