5.0 ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY AND HEALTH

5.1 Introduction

One way to prevent workplace injuries during sewerage work is to

establish proper job procedures and train all employees in safer and more
efficient work methods. Establishing proper sewerage procedures is one of the
benefits of conducting a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) – carefully studying and
recording each step of a job, identifying existing or potential sewerage work
hazards (both safety and health), and determining the best way to reduce or
eliminate these hazards.
Precautions are to be taken for protection of persons and properties from
injury or damage during sewerage system installation work. All site personnel
must adhere to safety requirements:
 Only experienced or skill personnel of sewerage system are allowed at
working area.
 Authorized personnel only to handle with the piling machine, excavator and
others plant and equipment.
 All workers must have proper training to do sewerage work.
 Site personnel must be briefed and be well versed with all site safety
measures.
 Site personnel must be in proper safety working attire e.g. safety boots and
helmets must be worn at all times.
 Site safety member should be available at all times and must be able to
respond correctly to emergency.
 Avoid carrying too heavy loads.

5.2 Personal Protective Equipment

 Hand Gloves
 Long sleeves
 Safety boots
 Safety Helmet

5.3 Safety plan

 There must be sufficient working space and clearance as directed by

superintending officer. Sewerage work shall not be allowed to continue if
fail to provide adequate working space.
