Define physical fitness

 According to Merriam Webster, physical fitness is good health and strength that is
achieved through exercise.
 Physical fitness refers to the ability of our body systems to work together efficiently
to allow us to be healthy and perform activities of daily living.
 It is our ability to carry out daily tasks without undue fatigue.
 It is a state of health and well-being, more specifically, the ability to perform aspects
of sports, occupations and daily activities.
 It is also the capacity of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and muscles to function at
optimum efficiency.
 Physical fitness is divided into two groups: health-related and skill-related fitness.
o Health related components of fitness are made up of five main components:
flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular
endurance, body composition.
o Skill related components of fitness include agility, balance, coordination,
power reaction time, speed.
 Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous
physical exercise, and sufficient rest.
 Lastly, we must remember that being physically fit helps improve our mental,
emotional, and social health.

2. Differentiate skill related from health related fitness (describe each
component)

Health-related physical fitness is primarily associated with disease prevention and

functional health. Participating in regular health-related fitness helps you control your
weight, prevents diseases and illness, improves your mood, boosts energy, and promotes
better sleep. In a much simpler term, health related-fitness is our ability to become and stay
physically healthy. It is made up of five sections: cardiovascular endurance, muscular
strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

 Muscular Strength:
o The ability of muscles to lift a heavy weight or exert a lot of
force one time.
 Muscular Endurance:
o The ability to use muscles for a long period of time without
tiring.
 Cardiovascular Endurance:
o The ability of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and blood to
work efficiently and to supply the body with oxygen.
 Body Composition:
o The combination of all of the tissues that make up the body
such as bones muscle, organs and body fat.
 Flexibility:
o The ability to use your joints fully through a wide range of
motion.

Skill-related physical fitness is also known as performance fitness because it involves
the ability to maintain high levels of performance on the playing fields. Those that have a
high level of skill-related fitness are more likely to be physically active than those who have
lower level of skill. There are six skill-related fitness components: agility, balance,
coordination, power reaction time, speed.

 Agility:
o It is the ability to move and change direction and position of the body
quickly and effectively while under control. It requires quick reflexes,
coordination, balance, speed, and correct response to the changing
situation.
 Balance:
o Is the ability to keep an upright posture while either standing still or
moving. Good balance in essential in many activities like skating,
surfing, skiing, and gymnastics
 Power
o Power is the ability to move weight with speed. Strength and speed are
both involved in power. Football players, swimmers, shot-putters,
discus throwers, and high jumpers are examples of athletes who
typically have a high degree of power.
 Reaction Time
o Is the amount of time it takes to start a movement once your senses
signal the need to move. People with good reaction time can usually
start quickly in track and swimming or react quickly in ping pong or
karate.
 Coordination
o Coordination is the body’s ability to perform smooth and efficient
movements. It is the integration of eye, hand, and foot movements.
This component is necessary for success in such sports as baseball,
softball, tennis, golf, and basketball.
 Speed
o Is the ability to cover a distance in a short amount of time. Speed is a
very important factor in many sports and activities. Short runs are used
to evaluate speed.
