NORMAL STRESS
1. Calculate the stress if a force of 12 N is applied to one end of 10 inch diameter circular
rod in Pascals.

2. An iron column of annular cross-section has an outer diameter of 200 mm and is

subjected to a force of 74 kN. Find the thickness of the wall if the allowable
compressive stress is 10 MPa.

3. Determine the outside diameter of a hollow steel tube that will carry a tensile load of
800kN at a stress of 140 MPa. Assume the wall thickness to be one eighth of the
outside diameter.

4. Given the bar with cross sectional area of 3 in2, determine the axial stress in the bar
on the cross section (a) 20” to the right of A, (b) 20” to the right of B, and (c) 20” to the
right of C.

5. A steel tie rod on a bridge must be made to withstand a pull of 8000 lbs. Find the
radius of the rod assuming a factor of safety of 4 and ultimate stress of 90,000 psi.

Notes:
 For no. 4, read up on axial loading.
 Draw the diagram needed to answer the problem.
 Handwritten, copy and provide the correct solution. You may use multiple sheets of
short bone paper.
 Borders are 0.5 inch at the top, right, and bottom and 1 inch at the left, in red.
 Grading System
o Accuracy of answers is 80% of total credits. It involves enclosing the final
answer in a box, use of correct units, and closeness of the answer to the correct
answer. Use at least 4 decimal places.
o Clearness of computation is 10% of total credits. Involves presentation of
solution in a way that can be clearly followed, even by a non-engineering major.
Proper flow and explanation when necessary.
o Presentation is 10% of total credits. Involves overall aesthetic of the problem
set, correct cover page, margins, and borders. Diagrams as supplementary to
the solution earn extra credits.
SHEAR STRESS
1. Problem no. 3 in handouts given. (Solution is on mathalino.com, and can help in
Problem no. 4)

2. If the ultimate shear strength of a steel plate is 53000 lb/in2, what force is necessary
to punch a 0.4 in radius hole in a 0.625 inch thick plate?

3. A punch for making holes in steel plates is shown below in figure a. Assuming that
there is a punch with a diameter of 20 mm used to punch a hole in a 5 mm plate as
shown in the cross sectional view in figure b, if a force P = 125 kN is required, what is
(a) the average shear stress in the plate and (b) the average compressive stress in
the punch?

4. Shafts and pulleys are usually fastened together by means of a key, as shown below.
Imagine a pulley subjected to a turning moment T of 2 kN-m, keyed by a 10 mm x 10
mm x 75 mm key to the shaft. The shaft is 50 mm in diameter. Determine the shear
stress on a horizontal plane through the key.

5. Consider a clevis in double shear with a force P of 400 kN applied at either end.
Assuming that the bolt has a diameter of 0.75 in, what is the average shear stress
experienced by the bolt in N/m2?
