Donna Lace Cowl Size

Circumference: 60cm (24 inches)


Depth: 30cm (12 inches)

Difficulty: The cowl can easily be adjusted to increase the circumference - more yarn will of course be
required to do this.

A cosy cowl, knitted in the round, using a selection of traditional Shetland lace patterns with a pretty Tension/Gauge
edging that can be blocked into soft or more dramatic points.
Tension is not critical, as this is not a fitted garment, but it will make a difference to the
Knitted in a laceweight yarn, there are pattern stitches on the majority of rows but, as it only uses amount of yarn required. I worked to the following tensions over the lace pattern, after
basic lace stitches and is worked in the round, and therefore with the knit side facing, it is suitable blocking:

Instructions for Adjusting the Size


Materials To make a double-length version which can be wrapped twice around the neck or worn in a
long loop, scarf style, cast on double the number of stitches shown and follow the same
(Pictured in Yak Merino Lace) instructions to the end (you will need twice as much yarn for this).
Approx 35g (280m) of any of the following Watercolours & Lace laceweight yarns:
BFL Lace, Baby Alpaca Lace, Baby Alpaca Silk Lace, Baby Alpaca Silk Cashmere Lace, To adjust the circumference further, add or subtract stitches from the cast on edge in
Baby Alpaca Silk Cashmere Sparkle Lace, Baby Camel Silk Lace, Cashmere Heavy Lace, multiples of 24, to keep the lace patterns correct.

With the smaller needles, cast on 168 sts. Join into a round, being careful not to twist the

Round 7: Knit to end Bind Off

Elastic or Lace Bind-off - a quicker option (and useful if you are running short of yarn)

Repeat Rounds 1 to 13 once more. Weave in yarn ends but don’t trim yarn until after blocking. Soak cowl in cool water with a
suitable gentle liquid wash (eg Eucalan or Soak) for 15 minutes. Rinse if required, then

Block your cowl by laying it flat on a towel or blocking board and pinning into shape, pulling
Note that you will be incorporating additional stitches into the pattern repeat from Round 1 out the points of the edging as shown in the pictures.
