of my beloved University?

St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) is one of the prestigious schools because of

REFLECT:
Paul was a tireless, fearless and faithful worker of the Gospel of Jesus. His self-
giving love was like that of Jesus who gave his whole life for us.

How does the life of St. Paul appeal to you?

Of all the characteristics or attitudes that Paul attributed in his self he is always
determined to do whatever it takes in his life. And this appealed me that much. Like Paul
who accepted rough treatment as a result of his conviction. Paul believed that his work is in
the service of God was so important that he needed to make whatever efforts were necessary
to the job.
As an educator we encountered difficulties of everything but as a model in the school we are
determined to do everything whether we accept rough result and turns everyone into dark
but in the end of it we accept and deals problems in positive approached.
Do you also have the desire to follow him as he tells us: BE IMITATORS OF ME, AS I
AM OF CHRIST?
We tried to imitate things or persons that motivates us every day and deals with them
with positivity as always. Which we think it helps us to enhance our desires and goals in life
to fulfil everything that listed in our bucket list of life.
Literally, I want to follow the footsteps of Paul the apostle as he follows the footsteps of
Jesus Christ. And I will use Paul as a springboard of whatever I wanted to be.

How do you follow Christ who gave his whole life for you?
The efforts and sacrifices of God as he save us from our sins is irreplaceable of
whatever gifts or money that we can give.
Thus, teachings and desires embedded with love and compassionate and following his ten
commandments are very much important to follow Christ who gave his whole life for us.

Cite a specific verse in your specific assignment that presents indicative and imperative
verbs.
Indicative Verb
“The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to
destroy”
Imperative Verb

“And they glorified because of me”

(Galatians 1:18-24)
EXPLANATION:
We are just human committing mistakes but God never rejected us despite of the
sins that we have. We can be as Paul “the sinner” but preaching the good news after he
persecuted.
God can use anyone of us to preach or spread the good news no matter who we are
and what we do.
The essence of being a servant of God and not expecting a reward after the efforts
gone is really much worth dealing for after all we glorify God because of our sacrifices to
him
We can be a servant of God no matter who we are and what we do.

Paul’s Ethos:

FINAL REQUIREMENTS
INS 203: PAULINE ETHICS

1. On personal level, describe your own “Road to Damascus”

experience.

Of all the bible stories I’ve heard Paul’s conversion on

the road to Damascus is the most thrilling. Because it really
captured a man who had been hate- filled villain that became a
love- filled hero by committing and loving himself to Jesus
Christ. This hater of Jesus was able to spread the gospel
throughout the known world as much as he can that anybody could
replicate his good doings.
We have all read the story of Saul’s conversion from
murderous enemy of Christ’s people to legendary evangelist for
God. While Paul did not become this legend as soon as he was
knocked off his horse, that fall began the process that took him
to that wonderful role in the history of our Faith.
We all have our “DAMASCUS horse” in our lives that will
challenge our faith to God that makes as away from him. And our
range against Jesus seemed to have no limit.
That horse could be pride, arrogance, selfishness, money, power,
fame, the flesh, or anything else that can take us away from our
mission of serving God. And we usually get down from the horse
back when something happened to us that will awake us from God’s
presence. Most of the time people think as if they don’t need
God we are trying to do something best without consulting God’s
Word and Christ teaching.
My roads to Damascus; I just want a happy family or should
I say a complete family with so much joy and faith. Yeah! It’s
hard for us to have a perfect family because in the first place
God never been a perfect to us. But I’m happy to haves a nice
family as much as we wanted. So we are five in the family we
lived in the same house, we eat in the same place, we sleep in
the same bed and we praise and worship God in the same Church.
The moment I grew up with my family I often encountered good
memories that strengthen our relationships likewise with our
relationships to God.
I thought the happy bonding and moments that we have is
road to Forever, until situations changes or lives. We
encountered problems that broke our hearts into small pieces.
One day, busy moments comes in our lives and while my parents
preparing the sea foods early in the morning to sell in the
market for us to sustain our needs while I and my younger sister
are ready to work, when police officers came into our house not
wearing their police uniforms surrounding our house and holding
guns. I was about to go when I heard my mother shouting! I
quickly go to my mother and ask what is happening until one of
the police officers with a mask on his face trapped me and
pointing out his gun and telling me not to do anything or else
we might get hurt.
I was crying that time when I saw my father surrounded with
police and keep him quiet because of drug issue. Then they
searched our house and we really shocked because as they
searched everything in our house they showed as a sachet of drug
“shabu” accusing that my father is a drug user.
As we expected my father went to the jail and all we have
to do is to cry. We stayed by his side for almost two weeks and
thinking of the money that we will spend for the attorney fees.
We seek help from a good friend to help us to provide money for
the bail band of my father and almost of my salary are given for
the bail band just to rescue my father from the issue thrown to
him. Seeing him inside the jail makes us unhappy and comes to
the point that we blamed God or should I say we questioned God
”why is he doing this thing to us” we only want a happy family
but giving us problems that we don’t deserve is much painful.
Like Paul I became blind while on my trip to Damascus. I
never walked with Christ after the suffering. I forgot to pray,
not consulting him whatever things we want to do. I don’t even
understand his plan that may even resist is it.
But in one moment of fear and abandoning Jesus Christ
enlightenment and regret comes in my mind. We really need God
for everything. When God asking me to Go down from the hoarse I
automatically follow him and until time comes my father went out
to jail and we overcome difficulties.
The problems happened in our lives my changes us from being
good to Jesus or near from Satan. But as we take the challenges
we picked lessons from it that will surely led us to God’s plan.

God’s standards, measures, and time tables have no

resemblance to our own, so it makes sense that His interventions
in our lives would similarly bear no reflection to our
expectations.
As we encountered problems we g o to mass and refresh our
souls listening to God’s word and nourishing our ourselves in
Christ’s body and blood , most of our application of Christ’s
teaching will occur in the real world outside of the church
itself.
God waited us until we bent our anger because of our
sufferings and bring back our faith to him. It is because God
will always patiently give us his divine mercy often when we are
at our worst and at our lowest point.
2. On the character of Paul, what did you discover about Paul
that you intend to imitate and apply to both your personal and
professional life?
People known in their characters they build and we most
of the time judged by the people who tried to interpret the
characters that we have.
As I’ve read the life of St. Paul there are many learning’s that
I encountered and I already used it in my chosen field of
profession.
We know that Paul was an inspirational man of God and
there are many things that we can learn from him. Although we
know him that he becomes a hater of Christians and there’s a
time that he tried to kill Christians for many years and did
everything that he could to try and stop the growth of
Christianity until he encountered with the Lord, and he changed
his way even his names.
Paul ends up bringing many people to the kingdom of God and
became a prime example of someone who has a heart on fire for
the Lord.
Of all the characters of Paul, God really showed to us
that he can use anyone to bring people back to him and he
ironically used Paul-a man who had been killing Christians. It
is hard for us to understand why God used Paul of all people, to
use him for his glory.
The fact of the matter is that God cares about everyone
and if God can use someone like Paul to do good that much, then
we as a simple human being who makes mistakes with other can be
like Paul to do good things also. God really proves to us that
he can use everyone including you to spread his glory.
As a teacher I am very grateful that God chose me to be in my
profession to educate students who are willing to grow up with
knowledge to achieve their goals. Being a teacher is not easy
because we encountered also difficulties likes what Paul
encountered in his life.
Being a person and as a teacher most of the time we commits sins
to our students, co-workers and even the parents like Paul.
There’s a time that we shout out of our students because of
their attitudes, we also speaks bad words to them due to anger.
But God is more than willing to forgive.
“Saul as sinner and Paul as an apostle” wanting that I
really discovered. We Christians, we can be really hard in
ourselves for our mistakes. And as we do mistakes we think that
God won’t love us anymore. But even still, God forgave us and
love us. Know that if we make a mistake, it’s okay! We are not
perfect people because we live in a sin fallen world. It is
impossible to be a perfect one. And that’s why we need God for
everything that we do.
I really don’t get it when my head teacher mess me up
while having the instructional supervision in my class. As if I
do crimes in teaching but I don’t get discourage when my head
teacher put me into shame in front of my students. But it’s okay
if we mess up because those situations allow God to use us to
transform and strengthen us that can be an encouragement to
those people who surrounds us.
Paul past teaches us to be a person focusing only the
present but not the past “our past doesn’t define us. But
nowadays people judged you from what you do from the past and
judged until the present time.
Paul wanted to know Jesus more and more. He spent quality time
with him as often as he could.
Dealing with my students for almost 12 hours is very much
tiring because they spent more time with us than with their
parents but wanting is I want is I was able to know them more
and more and how can I help them until the things they want to
go on through.
Paul taught us the quality time and that is the results
in knowing Christ intimately and personally. And I was able to
have quality time until my students and at the same time knowing
and improving their interests in lives.
Paul’s life and his works make it evident to us that he
cared for others as act says “while Paul was waiting for them I
Athena, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full
of idols” Paul had a heart for the lord, he also had a heart for
his people.
As the second mother of my students I really care for
them to be the best that I can. I am much willing to do
everything just to offer them enough time, love and care.
These are just few point of character that we can take away from
Paul but there is so much more that we can learn from him and we
can able to apply it all in whatever things that we want to do.
And those are the characters of Paul that I discovered that I
intended to imitate and apply in my personal life and I my
chosen field of profession.
3. Reflect on Paul’s ethical teachings. Draw their relevance in
today’s world and times. Include a discussion on Paul’s view of
sexuality.

Two other important contributions made by St; Paul were

finding a place for the Old Testament law in Christianity and
exploring the relationship between the Jews and Christians.
Sexual morality has varied greatly over time and between
cultures. But how does Paul’s overview sexuality? As stated in
the 1 Corinthians” that it is good for the unmarried to remain
this way, but if they cannot control themselves, they should
marry, "To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well
for them to remain unmarried as I am. But if they are not
practicing self-control, they should marry. For it is better to
marry than to be aflame with passion”.
Paul’s concerning that it is good for a man not to touch a
woman to avoid fornication. Let wife have her own husband and a
‘husband must have his own wife. Paul’s therefore stated that
“an unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide as
Paul’s done with Jesus Christ.
As God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath
called everyone, so let it be. 1 corithians7:21”is any man
called being circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. It
is any called in uncircumsision? Let him not be circumcised”
Pauls pointed out that let every man abide in the same
calling wherein he was called.
Paul’s concerning the virgins but keeping up of the
commandments of God. He gave his judgements, as one that hath
obtained mercy of the lord to be faithful.
4. Love is the highest virtue according to Paul. Write a journal
reflection on these biblical exhortations on love: 1 Cor 13:1-
13; and Rom 12:9-21.

Love has been a favoured topic of everyone which everyone

agrees that love implies strong feelings of affection,
Love that is something that is cultivated between two
people and grows over time, through getting to know him or her
and experiencing life’s many ups and downs together.
It is interesting that so many young people think of love
as something inexpressible and unknowable in itself, as if it is
the unutterable mystery that a person can only experience, but
never define.
We have likely heard the biblical exhortations on love: 1
Cor 13:1-13; and Rom 12:9-21 and pretty much inculcating us to
use love in good ways.
As a human being we use love in many ways and most of the
time we use love to hurt someone, to make people happy, to be
boastful to the things that we have. But true loves makes our
lives appreciate God’s presence that strengthen our faith and
continues spreading the good news.
Love never ends; our love to God never ends because this is
the only way that we make use our love to God to strengthen the
faith of the Christians and follow him eternally.
Love must be sincere as God love us with sincerity. Love
the person with no condition and be joyful in hope, patient in
affliction, and faithful in prayer.
Love the person who hurt you, who makes you sad, who
betrayed you and did bad things to you. If they love you in evil
ways do not repay anyone evil for evil. Just do what is right
and to avoid what is love because that love is. Revenge love to
them because there’s a room for God’s wrath.

Faith and hope are the arms of love the makes everyone
united and bonds.

SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITY:

1. SPC/SPUP Paulinian History

St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) was founded on May 10,

1907, as Colegio de San Pablo, by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres,
(Mother Ephrem Marie Fieu, Sr. Suzanne du Sacre Coeur Cran, Sr. Agnes
de Sainte Anne Couplan, and Sr. Jeanne de St. Louis Bourrelly, Sr.
Marie Angeline Acau and Postulant Sr. Ste. Foy de Sacre Coeur
Sacramento) who came to Cagayan Valley upon the invitation of Bishop
Dennis Dougherty. The school’s name was changed to Colegio del Sagrado
Corazon de Jesus in 1909, then to Sacred Heart of Jesus Institution
(SHOJI) in 1925. The school started in a Spanish Convento, adjoining
the Cathedral, but due to increase of enrolment and curricular
expansion, the community moved to the Colegio de San Jacinto and its
grounds in 1934 (where the University stands today) which the SPC
Sisters acquired from the Dominican Order.
The school served as military garrison and hospital of the
Japanese forces in 1941. The entire complex was razed to the ground
during the Liberation. In 1948, the school undertook the initiative of
being the first Teacher-Training Institution in Cagayan Valley, as it
assumed the name St. Paul College of Tuguegarao (SPCT). With the
opening of college degrees, the school became the first accredited
institution in the region by the Philippine Accrediting Association of
Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) in 1961. However, the
entire complex was reduced into ashes on January 18, 1965. Despite the
challenges and like a gold tested in fire, SPUP became the first
University and Catholic University in Cagayan Valley in 1982.
In its efforts towards global and international education, SPUP
gained the distinction of being the First Private Catholic University
in Asia and the First Private University in the Philippines to be
granted ISO 9001 Certification by TUV Rheinland in 2000 and the only
University accredited by the Asian Association of Schools of Business
International (AASBI) in 2014. SPUP has also been selected, as one of
only 11 Universities in the Philippines, by World Bank as Knowledge
for Development Center (KDC). Moreover the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED) has designated SPUP as one of the 12 participating
schools in the entire country for the ASEAN International Mobility for
Students (AIMS) programme. In July 2014, SPUP was conferred a full
accredited status by the International Accreditation Organization
(IAO) in recognition of its outstanding organizational management,
business management and business performance through its commitment to
quality and continuous improvement. SPUP has also been sought as a
partner University of international schools in Asia, Europe and
Australia. These accolades advanced the stature of SPUP as an
International University. Currently, the international community in
SPUP, comprising of international and exchange students and
professors, is continuously growing; while, its international linkages
and partnerships are extensively expanding. Subsequently the
pioneering Internationalization initiatives of SPUP have fostered
opportunities for SPUP students and teachers for their academic
exposure and exchange, work and travel, and cultural immersions in
various countries across the world. As a result, SPUP has been
recognized as an affiliate of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project
Network, or ASPNet for its support to international understanding,
peace, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development and quality
education in practice.
In the evangelization of faith and promotion of arts and culture,
the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines through the
Episcopal Commission on Culture (CBCP-ECC) identified SPUP as a
Catholic Center for Culture in 2012. Through this designation, SPUP is
tasked to collaborate in the conservation of the patrimony of the
Church and to promote greater awareness of the Church’s heritage
through education, worship and the Sacraments. SPUP has also
instituted a proactive ecumenical approach towards intercultural and
interfaith differences due to the increasing population of
international students. The creative approach “to where faith and
culture meet” responds to the challenges of internationalization where
the academic community is strongly rooted in the Catholic beliefs,
respectful of others’ creed and culture. In 2014, the National
Historical Commission (NHCP) of the Philippines bestowed SPUP a
Historical Marker in recognition of its contribution in the historical
development of Cagayan Valley in the fields of education and public
service.
Today, SPUP is recognized by the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED) as an Autonomous Institution; Center of
Excellence in Nursing, Center of Excellence in Teacher
Education; Center of Development in Information Technology;
Center of Teacher Training Institution; the first accredited
Integrated Basic Education Unit in Cagayan Valley; a deputized
institution for the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency
Accreditation Program (ETEAAP); Most Outstanding Student
Services in the Philippines; Outstanding Research/Academic
Library in the Philippines; and, the Lead School of the St. Paul
University System.

As it offers basic education to graduate school programs,

SPUP has continuously formed graduates in personifying Catholic
and Paulinian values and virtues; thereby, making a difference
in contributing to social transformation in the service of the
nation, the Church and the entire humanity.
2. Paulinian 5 Core Values. Explain each and elaborate on how
is it to be embodied in your professional life.
Christ-Centeredness
Life is one that is focused upon a commitment to Jesus
Christ as Lord. At the core of every human decision is a
motivation. Some people are motivated by the quest for pleasure
or money. As a teacher is very important to be a Christ centered
because God is with you whatever teachings I teach God is always
the center of all the discussions.
Commission

A teacher have always the mission to teach learners

according to the Gods will and his teachings to spread the good
news like actively participating in different community services
to save the world to make it better place to live in.

Community

A teacher is always responsible,-responsible for everything

that makes the students responsible also.

A Teacher that is responsible family member and citizen,

concerned with building communities, promotion of people,
justice, and peace, and the protection of the environment.

Charisms
Developing the learner’s gifts/talents to be put in the
service of the community, he/she strives to grow and improve
daily, always seeking the better and finer things, and the final
good.
Charity
I always Urged on by the love of Christ, and be warm,
hospitable, and "all to all", especially to the underprivileged.

Thus, teacher is committed to the formation of self-directed

Catholic Filipino men and women who find fulfillment in
intelligent fellowship and responsible leadership in meeting
their responsibilities to God, country, and fellowmen.
3. Paul’s Main Teachings on Charity and Service for the
Building of the Mystical Body of Christ

When St. Paul was struck down on the way to Damascus he

heard a voice saying to him “Saul, Saul, why persecutes thou
me?” (Acts ix 4). Who said “Who are thou, Lord” and he, “I am
Jesus, whom thou persecutes.” Saul was persecuting the Church
of God; Our Lord identifies himself with that persecuted Church:
in persecuting the Church Saul was persecuting Christ himself.
Thus at the very outset of his Christian career St. Paul
learned that truth which was to affect the whole of his
teaching, the truth of the union of Christ with his Church, a
union so close, so unique, so unparalleled, that he uses one
imaged expression after another to try to bring home to his
hearers a fuller realization of the supernatural reality which
had been revealed to him. He uses the analogy of the human
body, of the building, of grafting, to render more vivid the
truth he wants Christians to understand.
Christ is the Head of his Church, and “he hath
subjected all things beneath his feet and hath given him for
supreme Head to the Church, which is his body, the fullness of
him who is wholly fulfilled in all” (Eph. i 22-23). And again,
“the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ too is Head of
the Church, himself being the saviour of the body” (Eph. v
23).
4. Paul’s Main Teachings on Prayer

Paul lays it down as a vital, all-essential injunction in

writing to the Church at Thessalonica, "Rejoice evermore. Pray
without ceasing. In everything give thanks. For this is the will
of God concerning you." The Church must give itself to unceasing
prayer. Never was prayer to cease in the Church. This was the
will of God concerning His Church on earth.

Paul was not only given to prayer himself, but he

continually and earnestly urged it in a way that showed its
vital importance. He was not only insistent in urging prayer
upon the Church in his day, but he urged persistent praying.
"Continue in prayer and watch in the same," was the keynote of
all his exhortations on prayer. "Praying always with all prayer
and supplication," was the way he pressed this important matter
upon the people. "I will, therefore," I exhort; this is my
desire, my mind upon this question, "that men pray everywhere,
without wrath and doubting." As he prayed after this fashion
himself, he could afford to press it upon those to whom he
ministered.
SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITY:

1. Paul’s Attitude in Sufferings

Paul’s takes pleasure in suffering because I and so many

others have to suffer every day, and we will be much happier, if
we learn to love it as Paul did.
Paul was shipwrecked, stoned chronically persecuted, and
suffered all kinds of torments, but he learned how to delight in
the trials and suffering.

2. Paul’s Love for Others

Paul’s suffered much when he is persecuted but took all

of this positively until he encountered Jesus Christ. Paul is
especially associated with this reformation’s emphasis on
salvation through faith alone by grace alone.
For Paul, life in Christ and his church begins by grace
through faith but this is a journey that progresses through and
finds its fulfilment in love.
Indeed, the significance he attributes to love far
outweighs that of faith and Love is the highest virtue according
to Paul.

3. Paul’s Main Teachings on Justice and Righteousness

Righteousness for Paul is the avoidance of sin, but it

is also more creative and robust than this. Paul identifies
righteousness very closely with the spirit and grace.
For Paul, righteousness also means justice where Gods
righteousness includes generous, grace, inspired justice.
