ELECTRICAL TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND THEIR USES

Circuit Testers

The important thing is to ensure that it is working so you can verify

that you have the power off on any circuit you may be working
with. Check it on a known live source before trusting it to
determine if your circuit is dead.\

Screwdrivers

Screwdriver, tool, usually hand-operated, for turning screws with

slotted heads. For screws with one straight diametral slot cut
across the head, standard screwdrivers with flat blade tips and in
a variety of sizes are used.

A basic set of screwdrivers should include the 3 main types of

screwdriver heads.

1. The Standard blade tip

2. The Phillips tip

3. The recessed square shank or Robertson tip

Cordless Screwdriver/Drill

If you are going to take on any project beyond the most basic of
jobs, such as, for example, changing out an individual receptacle
or switch, you should have a good cordless drill and driver tool,
along with a complete set of screwdriver bits and drill bits. This will
save you a lot of time and when used properly, a power driver
can be used in place of a screwdriver for most jobs.

Electric Drill

A drill is a tool primarily used for making round holes or driving

fasteners. It is fitted with a bit, either a drill or driver,
depending on application, secured by a chuck. Some
powered drills also include a hammer function. Drills vary
widely in speed, power, and size.

Wire Strippers

Wire cutters are commonly used to cut copper, brass, iron,

aluminum, and steel wire. Some wire cutters have insulated
handles which ensure that you will not get shocked from the
wires you're working with. Diagonal cutters have intersecting
jaws that cut the wire at an angle, leaving a flat tip.

Lineman’s Plier

Used by linemen, electrical contractors and other tradesmen

primarily for gripping, twisting, bending and cutting wire, cable
and small metalwork components. They owe their
effectiveness to their plier design, which multiplies force
through leverage

Standard, Long-Nosed Pliers

Needle nose pliers, also known as long-nose pliers, is a

versatile tool that has long, tapering jaws with a pointed tip.
Among their many uses are gripping, bending, and cutting
small-gauge wire. They can reach into tight places that are
inaccessible to other types of pliers.

Diagonal Pliers

Diagonal pliers (or wire cutters or diagonal cutting pliers or

diagonal cutters or side cutting pliers) are pliers intended for the
cutting of wire (they are generally not used to grab or turn
anything).

Hammer

A hammer is a tool consisting of a weighted "head" fixed to a

long handle that is swung to deliver an impact to a small area
of an object. This can be, for example, to drive nails into wood,
to shape metal (as with a forge), or to crush rock. Hammers are
used for a wide range of driving, shaping, and breaking
applications.

Nut Drivers

A nut driver is a tool for tightening nuts and bolts. It essentially

consists of a socket attached to a shaft and cylindrical handle
and is similar in appearance and use to a screwdriver. They
generally have a hollow shaft to accommodate a shank onto
which a nut is threaded. They are typically used for lower torque
applications than wrenches or ratchets and are frequently used
in the appliance repair and electronics industries.

Tape Measure

A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler and used to

measure distance.

Level

A spirit level, bubble level or simply a level is an instrument

designed to indicate whether a surface is horizontal or vertical.

Crescent wrench

An adjustable spanner or adjustable wrench is an open-end

wrench with a movable jaw, allowing it to be used with different
sizes of fastener head rather than just one fastener size, as with
a conventional fixed spanner.

Electrical Tape

Electrical tape (or insulating tape) is a type of pressure-sensitive

tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that
conduct electricity. It can be made of many plastics, but vinyl is
most popular, as it stretches well and gives an effective and long
lasting insulation.

Duct Tape

Duct tape, also called duck tape, is cloth- or scrim-backed

pressure-sensitive tape, often coated with polyethylene. There
are a variety of constructions using different backings and
adhesives, and the term 'duct tape' is often used to refer to all
sorts of different cloth tapes of differing purposes.

Tool Box or Chest

A toolbox (also called toolkit, tool chest or workbox) is a box to

organize, carry, and protect the owner's tools. They could be
used for trade, a hobby or DIY, and their contents vary with
the craft of the owner.

Allen Wrenches

A hex key, Allen wrench or Allen key, is a simple tool used to

drive bolts and screws with hexagonal sockets in their heads.

Pocket Knife

A pocketknife is a foldable knife with one or more blades that

fit inside the handle that can still fit in a pocket. It is also known
as a jackknife (jack-knife) or a penknife, though a penknife
may also be a specific kind of pocketknife.

Flashlight

A flashlight (more often called a torch outside North America) is

a portable hand-held electric light. The source of the light is
usually an incandescent light bulb (lamp) or light-emitting diode
(LED).

Magnifier

A magnifying glass (called a hand lens in laboratory contexts) is a

convex lens that is used to produce a magnified image of an
object. The lens is usually mounted in a frame with a handle (see
image). A magnifying glass can be used to focus light, such as to
concentrate the sun's radiation to create a hot spot at the focus
for fire starting.

Antistatic Wrist Band

An anti-static wrist strap is a key piece of safety gear that helps

to prevent the buildup of static electricity near sensitive
electronics or other projects where static charge could damage
electronics or cause safety issues. The wrist strap is often used
with an anti-static mat or other type of work space covering.
Special, highly conductive threads on the wrist strap lead to a
ground conductor in order to discharge static electricity safely.

Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat

to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two work
pieces.

VOM(Volt-Ohm-Milliameter)

A multimeter or a multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-

milliammeter), is an electronic measuring instrument that
combines several measurement functions in one unit. A typical
multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance.
Analog multimeters uses a microammeter with a moving pointer
to display readings.
