CHOOSE WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU CHOOSE

In a historic moment, former President Benigno Aquino III

approved the Republic Act No. 10533, known as the “Enhanced Basic
Education Act of 2013” or the K to 12 curriculum, signing into the law on
May 15, 2013 which took effect on June 8, 2013. One of the aims of the
Department of Education is to prepare the students for a more challenging
activities in college. The students that will graduate in senior high school
could join already the workforce even without having a degree or finishing
college. These students that will take the additional two years of
education can benefit an education system that is suited for the 21 st
century. Senior high school will help the students to focus and master a
field that fit their taste. Students can also choose on what track that suits
their skills and interests. And all of the graduates of this program will also
be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue better lives for
themselves and even their families.
The senior high school program is offering four main tracks for
those who would like to attend it, these are the Academic Track,
Technical-Vocational Track, Sports Track and the Art and Design Track. It
is not easy for the students to choose on what track they would want to
get in senior high school and the Department of Education expected it,
therefore they implemented the Career Guidance Program. This program
is to guide the students in an appropriate direction. It is important for the
grade ten students to choose the best track that they would get in senior
high school because it will be a big influence when they enter college.
The Academic Track is divided into four strand, the Science
Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM), General Academic Strand
(GAS), Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), and Humanities
and Social Sciences (HUMSS). The STEM strand is focusing on students
who wants to be an engineer, architecture, mathematicians, or even
medicine in college. The ABM strand is designed for learners who aim to
take up business, accountancy, or management in college. The HUMMS
strand is for learners who aim to take up journalism, communication arts,
liberal arts, education, and other social science-related courses in college.
And the GAS strand is for those who are undecided or who wants to be
teacher. The students that will take this strand will be given bridging
courses to assess their preparedness for the field of study that they will
choose in the future.

The Technical-Vocational Track is divided into two strands and

these are the Home Economics (HE) and the Information and
Communication Technology (ICT). The home economics strand will let the
learners who finish these strand to have a National Certification II (NCII)
and they may already apply for work after graduating in high school. And
students who would like to pursue culinary arts should take this. In the
ICT strand, learners will also have a National Certification and they may
already apply for work after graduating in high school too. The students
who would love to pursue information technology and computer science
should choose this.
The Sports track will give the students who would love to choose
this the basic principles and techniques in relation with physical education
and recreation. The students that will take this would likely become a
fitness trainers, game officials, tournament manager, recreation
attendant, masseur, or gym instructor. And lastly, the Arts and Design
track which aims for the students who love to be in the performative and
creative field. The profession of the students who would finish this would
likely be a script writer, song writer, film maker and even a photographer.
According to Luistro (2014), “The Senior High School Program lets
our learners choose the appropriate tracks they see fit for them. It gives
them the opportunity to choose their own tracks depending on their life
plans”. The K to 12 curriculum gave us another two years of school not
for it to give burdens but instead make our life more easier. Although
difficulties and inadequacies may arise, its benefits will remain and will
also be a big help to us for a long time. Therefore, students who will enter
senior high school should choose what they love and love what they
choose.
