Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

I- OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. prove the Intersecting Chord power theorem by observing the measures of each segment;
b. state the Intersecting Chord power theorem of a circle; and
c. apply the theorem in solving geometric problems.

II- SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: The Power Theorems (Circle: Intersecting Chord Power Theorem)
B. Reference: E-Math Work text in Mathematics 10 by Orlando A. Oronce, et.al.
C. Materials: Charts and Marker
D. Duration: 1 hour
E. Strategy: Discovery Learning

III- Procedure:
A. Review
Match Column A to Column B
A B B
1. Chord AB D
2. Secant AC
3. Tangent BD
O
A C

Chord: Is a line segment joining any two points on a circle.

Secant: A line passing through two points on a circle.
Tangent Line: is the straight line that "just touches" the curve at that
point or A line external to a circle, passing through one point on the
circle, is a tangent.

B. Unlocking of Difficulties
Activity: Counting the number of units in a segment
A

c O
D

B
Guide Questions:
1. How many units are there in AO, DO, CO, BO?
2. How did you count the Number of units?
C. Activity
The students will be grouped into three. Each group will be given specific task.
They will complete the table by observing measures of the chords and exploring how are
they related to each other. They will Fill up the following table below.
A

C O
D

Circle AO BO AO x BO CO DO CO x DO
O

Guide Questions:
1. What is the measurement (units) of each segment?
2. What is the product of the two segments?
3. Observe the values in column with heart, what conclusion can you
make?
D. Discussion:
The Intersecting Segments
of Chords Power Theorem B
(Chord-Chord Theorem) C
If two chords intersect in the O If the Chords AB and CD
interior of the circle, then the D intersects at Q, then
product of the lengths of the AO*BO=CO*DO
segments of one chord is A
equal to the product of the
lengths of the segments of
the other chord
Example:

8cm 10cm

x 5cm

Guide Questions:
1. What is the product of 8 and 5?
2. What would be the number to be multiplied to 10 so that it will be equal to the product of 8
and 5?
IV- Generalization:
1. Who can state the Intersecting of Chord Power Theorem?

V- Evaluation:
1. 2. 3.
2cm 6ft

5cm 4ft
4cm z
3m 6ft
x 4m
