Statement of the Problem

The primary aim of this study is to determine the effects of smoking among Senior High

School in their Academic Performance for the School Year 2019-2020 at Jose C. Feliciano

College Foundation.

Specifically, the study will seek to answer to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the Senior High School students in terms of:

1.1 Age;
1.2 Gender;
1.3 Year Level;
1.4 Strand; and
1.5 Daily allowance?

2. What are the smoking habits of the respondents when it comes to;

2.1 Brand of Cigarette;

2.2 Number of cigarettes consumed (per week);
2.3 Cost of smoking;
2.4 Frequency of smoking (per week);
2.5 Time to smoke; and
2.6 IjReason for smoking?

3. How does smoking affect your academic performance when it comes to;

3.1 Going to school; and

3.2 Doing your requirements?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance oftherespondent their

smoking habits?

Σf(100) Statistical Treatment of Data

The data that was gathered from the questionnaire was tallied, tabulated

and interpreted using the following formula.

1. Frequency and Percentage. It is used in evaluating the profile of the respondents. Below

is the formula used:

Where:

P is the percent;

f is the frequency; and

N is the number of cases

2. Weighted Mean. Is a kind of average, instead of each data point contributing equally to

the final mean, some data points contribute more “weight” than the others. This statistical

tool is used to treat the effects of smoking among senior high school in their academic

performance. The formula used is:

Where:

WM is the weighted mean;

Σ is the summation;
F is the frequency of each class;

x is the weight; and

N is the total number of respondents

Treatment of the Hypothesis. The researchers used Pearson correlational coefficient, also

referred to as a Pearson R test, it is a statistical formula that measures the strength between variable

and relationships. To determine how strong the relationship between two variables.

Where:

N is the number of pairs of scores

Σxy is the sum of the products of paired scores

Σx is the sum of the x scores

Σy is the sum of the y scores

Σx² is the sum of the square x scores

Σy² is the sum of the square y scores

Likert Scale. The following qualitative description was adapted to quantify the responses of the

respondents in every item. The scale below will be used to interpret the responses of the

respondents for every survey question by computing the weighted mean.

Scale of Values Scale of Range Qualitative Description

5 4.20-5.00 Not Smoker

4 3.40-4.19 Non-daily Smoker

3 2.60-3.39 Mild Smoker

2 1.80-2.59 Daily Smoker

1 1.00-1.79 Heavy Smoker
