Web Design Final Project Description

Title or Topic of Website: A Hiker’s Guide to Half Dome

Date this Design Created/Modified: 9/11/2019

Designer’s Name: Sarah Barnhart

Project Description:

This website is intended to help give hikers an idea of what to expect when ascending Half
Dome in Yosemite National Park. My final website design will include the following six pages:
Home, History, Prepare, Yosemite Valley, Are You Ready?, and Resources.

1. HOME: The home tab will display images and give a short description of Half Dome.

2. HISTORY: The history tab will consist of a short description of Half Dome’s history
with an image of Half Dome imbedded in the background. The history will include a
timeline displaying the annual increase in population of hikers, starting with the man
who first stepped foot on Half Dome.

3. PREPARE: The prepare tab is in the form of an accordion, which acts as a job aid to
help hikers with preparation and expectations. This page includes images in each step.

4. YOSEMITE VALLEY: Not all members of a travel group will be up for the Half
Dome challenge. This tab is intended for anyone that would like to explore other
options in Yosemite. The Yosemite Valley tab will be an interactive map. The user can
click on a trail to learn more about the hike. This tab will show popular areas in
Yosemite, including rock climbing spots, the visitor center, tours, park food options,
campgrounds, etc. Each trail will be accompanied by an image for a visual of the
activity.

5. ARE YOU READY?: The are you ready tab is a knowledge check that will consist of
a series of quiz questions. This tab will help users determine if they are prepared
enough to ascend the famous dome. All questions will be based on information
provided in the site.

6. RESOURCES: The resources tab will be setup as a multi-tab clickable display using
iFrames. Some tabs will include an explore the valley tab with a satellite view of half
dome, a live weather forecast tab, a direct link to purchase permits and sign up for the
Half Dome Lottery, a link to a group guided tour via TripAdvisor, and nature sounds
provided by YouTube from the direct government national park website.

Target Audience:
This website is intended for new and experienced hikers of all ages, genders, and cultures that
have not yet ventured to Half Dome. Even with zero to minimal hiking experience, this website
will help interested and curious persons explore and learn more about the adventure. The
website will help the target audience not only prepare for the strenuous hike but become
motivated to give it a try.

Learning Objectives:

Learners should be able to meet the following objectives upon completion of reading, viewing,
and interacting with the entire website:

 Given a historical information tab, identify the founder of Half Dome and its increasing
population
 Given a job aid, determine the necessary requirements that will ensure a hiker is fully
prepared to ascend Half Dome safely
 Given a map of Yosemite Valley, locate the trails and other activities that Yosemite
Valley has to offer
