TENSILE STRENGTH OF REINFORCE CONCRETE BAR

I. Objectives:
1. To learn how to use the Universal Testing Machine
2. To determine the yielding and breaking point of the Reinforced Concrete Bar
3. To determine the tensile strength and elongation of the Reinforced Concrete Bar

II. Materials and Equipment Needed:

 1 meter Reinforce Concrete Bar (RCB)
 Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
 Weighing scale
 Vernier caliper
 Steel rule (1m)
 Center punch
 Claw hammer

III. Procedure:
1. Prepare 1 meter RCB.
2. Find the indicated measurements of the RCB:
a. Inside diameter (d1)
b. Diameter of corrugated side (d2)
c. Outside diameter (d3)
d. Length (L)
e. Weight (WT)
3. Determine the midpoint of the RCB, measure a setback of 100 mm then mark it.
4. Calibrate the UTM then move the load control to HOLD.
5. Place the 1 meter RCB in the UTM and make sure it is gripped tightly.
6. Slowly move the load control to LOAD and maintain the movement of the pointer.
7. Carefully observe the pointer and wait for the yielding point, then record it.
8. Patiently wait for the breaking point.
9. After getting the breaking point, move the load control to RETURN mode.
10. Remove the RCB from the UTM.
11. Measure the new length of the RCB.
12. Compute the elongation of the RCB.
IV. Results:
