Hi Harpreet,

Thank you for your e-mail, and your letter.

Thanks for your interest in volunteering for Art Club at Blackfriars. I am thrilled that I have had a
quite a few people express interest in volunteering and am now just working out who is available
when, and what level of involvement you are interested in. If you can fill in the information in the
document attached and send it back to me, that would be very helpful. I will be able to find times for
all of you to volunteer. I have also attached the original information letter for you.

We will start Art Club on the second week back to school in term 2, and in the first week on
Thursday the 4th I will invite all the volunteers to come for an induction session from 3:30 to 5:00. In
this session, we will cover Occ health and safety for the school, I will get you the required paperwork
for a Police Check in Catholic schools if necessary, I will show you the rooms and the resources we
have, outline teacher expectations and give you an overview of the students involved.

Blackfriars is an all boys Catholic College in the Dominican tradition with students from Reception to
year 12. We are at 17 Prospect Road Prospect. We have a specialist Visual Art program in the
primary school that I introduced 6 years ago, and this has slowly contributed to an increased interest
in the visual arts. I accept student in art club from years 3 to year 12. The senior students will be
using art club to work on their Folio, Practical and Visual Study, unless there is an activity running
that links directly to their topics.

The other boys are an interesting bunch. All the boys from primary who are on the list have a
genuine interest in art, and in class are keen and interested and for the most part well behaved. In
art club, they can get a bit silly and need to be kept on task, I think this is because it is not a ‘proper’
subject, but a club, and they love engaging with the older boys. Some of the middle school and year
10 boys are very very quiet and shy and will struggle to engage vocally, but will listen and do
wonderful work. Some other middle school boys I suspect have chosen art club because they don’t
want to do a sport.

In the past, I have found that age is no indicator of skill or ability. I don’t want to split up the groups
according to age, but rather let them choose what interests them. If we have a wide enough range
we will be fine, and the novelty of having teachers who are not their normal teachers will inspire
them.

Please e-mail me if you have any other questions.

Kind regards,
Robyn Carmody
